Okay, so it looks like Nintendo is changing things up with how they price games for the Switch 2. I’ve noticed microSD card prices have been going up, and it seems like Nintendo is responding to that. Starting in May, their first-party games will actually cost more to download digitally than to buy a physical copy! The first game affected is Yoshi and the Mysterious Book – the digital version is $59.99, but the physical copy will be $69.99. It’s a pretty big change, and honestly, a little surprising!
As a Nintendo fan, I was happy to hear they’re just making sure the price of their games reflects what it costs to make and sell them, whether you buy a physical copy or download it. It’s great that we’ll have even more ways to pick up the games we love! Nintendo also confirmed that stores will still decide their own prices, so you might find different deals depending on where you shop.
Considering how expensive first-party games have become, this is potentially welcome news. Last year, Mario Kart World sold for $79.99 – a first for the industry – and games like Donkey Kong Bananza cost $69.99, similar to other major game releases. While Yoshi and the Mysterious Book probably didn’t cost as much to make, any sign of more reasonable pricing is a positive development.
However, people who like to collect games or prefer having physical copies end up paying more. This feels unfair, especially since Nintendo admits these versions are essentially the same as the digital ones. Unfortunately, current market conditions are challenging, and even with the Switch 2’s success, Nintendo needs to adapt.
