10 Best Hulk Team-Up Stories in Marvel Comics

The Hulk is known for being a powerful and often destructive antihero, frequently battling those around him. However, despite his reputation as a loner, he’s actually teamed up with other heroes just as often – if not more so – than many traditionally team-oriented superheroes. These alliances often start with conflict, as heroes may initially have to fight him before they can work together against a common enemy. Throughout his history, from his first appearances in 1963 to recent comics, the Hulk has consistently found himself fighting alongside other heroes when the situation demands it.

Here’s a look at some of the best team-up stories featuring the Hulk in Marvel Comics, ranging from single adventures to longer story arcs.

10) Hulk and Red She-Hulk (Incredible Hulks #628)

The 2011 ongoing comic series, Incredible Hulks, featured multiple Hulks and allowed for team-up stories. Issue #628, by Greg Pak and Tom Grummett, brought Hulk and his wife, Red She-Hulk (Betty Ross), together when they rescued passengers from a downed United Nations plane. They then faced off against the Knights of Rome, who were after Pandora’s Box, and the villain Tyrannus. The issue also included a touching scene where Bruce and Betty kissed, as it was the first time Hulk realized Betty was alive again. This storyline, featuring a married superhero couple working together, made it a special and unique Hulk adventure.

9) Joe Fixit and Patch (Wolverine #8)

A classic comic book pairing happens in Wolverine #8, when Hulk’s gray persona, Joe Fixit, joins forces with Wolverine (known as Patch in Madripoor). This team-up was significant because Wolverine actually debuted in The Incredible Hulk comics, sent by Canada to try and contain the Hulk after he crossed the border. Seeing these two characters work together was a rare treat. True to form, they initially clashed before ultimately focusing on taking down slave traders in a dangerous town. This story showcased a particularly complex and morally ambiguous time for both heroes, making for a fantastic mix of action and humor.

8) Hulk and the Secret Defenders (Doctor Strange #50)

Hulk was an original member of the Defenders. In a 1993 storyline in Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme, the team briefly came back together. Doctor Strange assembled a new version called the Secret Defenders, bringing in Hulk (in his Professor Hulk form), Silver Surfer, and Ghost Rider. Their first mission involved battling Dormammu in the Dark Dimension. This adventure led to a rotating team format for the Defenders, but it was a strong beginning with three of the original four members reunited.

7) Hulk in the New Fantastic Four (Fantastic Four #347-349)

It’s surprising how often the Hulk has teamed up with others, given his desire for solitude. He even joined the Fantastic Four for a brief period, alongside Spider-Man, Ghost Rider, and Wolverine, starting in Fantastic Four #347. This unusual team formed when a Skrull impostor, disguised as Susan Richards, requested their assistance. Their adventure took them to Monster Island to battle the Mole Man and then face a group of Skrulls. Though Hulk didn’t clash with his teammates as he often does, the team was full of constant arguments and provided a lot of entertainment. This run lasted through Fantastic Four issues #347-349.

6) Hulk and the Pantheon (Incredible Hulk #379-426)

As a longtime comic book reader, I have to say Peter David’s run on The Incredible Hulk is legendary, and a highlight for me was introducing the Pantheon. These characters first showed up in issue #368, but really became integral to the story starting with #379, beautifully illustrated by Dale Keown. What made this period so special was that it lasted nearly four years! It wasn’t just mindless smashing; Hulk was actually smart and the missions were surprisingly strategic. David really tapped into something new by portraying Hulk as a capable leader, a side of the character we hadn’t really seen before, and it totally worked.

5) Hulk and Captain Universe (Incredible Hulk Annual #10)

In Incredible Hulk Annual #10, the Hulk joined forces with Captain Universe in a unique team-up. The story, created by Bill Mantlo and Rick Leonardi, features Bruce Banner briefly separating from the Hulk and gaining the powers of Captain Universe to prevent a nuclear missile strike. Without Banner’s control, the Hulk goes on a rampage, hindering Captain Universe’s efforts. This creates the unusual situation of Banner having to battle the Hulk. Ultimately, they’re forced to cooperate when the missile detonates in space, causing a nuclear fallout. This early Hulk story was particularly ambitious, combining Banner’s intelligence with the Hulk’s immense strength through the Captain Universe persona.

4) Hulk and the Defenders (Marvel Feature #1)

Hulk was a key member of the original Defenders, a Marvel team jokingly called a “non-team” because its members often clashed. Doctor Strange managed to bring together Hulk, Namor, and the Silver Surfer to save the world several times, despite their very different personalities. The team first appeared in Marvel Feature #1, and it was actually Hulk who started things off by discovering Namor had been captured and asking Strange for assistance. They initially battled Necrodamus, and the Silver Surfer later joined their ranks. This is unusual because Hulk is typically portrayed as a force of destruction, but in this case, he’s the hero who brings the team together.

3) Hulk and the Avengers (Avengers #1)

The Avengers first came together when the Hulk went on a destructive outburst, but it wasn’t a simple case of stopping a monster. Rick Jones revealed that Loki was actually behind the chaos, having manipulated the Hulk. This led to a fight between the Hulk and Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, and the Wasp, after which they united to pursue Loki. This marked a historic moment – the very first team-up of Marvel’s greatest heroes, with the Hulk as an original member. However, the Hulk left the team after only two issues because he felt the others didn’t trust him and wouldn’t give him a fair chance.

2) Hulk and Sentry (Sentry/Hulk #1)

A standout Hulk story appeared in the 2001 one-shot comic Sentry/Hulk, written by Paul Jenkins and illustrated by Bill Sienkiewicz. The story delved into the history of the Sentry, one of Marvel’s earliest heroes, and revealed his close friendship with the Hulk. In the beginning, the Sentry’s powers uniquely helped calm the Hulk, keeping his rage and emotions in check. The comic showed a time when both heroes were celebrated and worked together to save the world. However, the arrival of the villainous Void shattered their partnership and unleashed Bruce Banner’s painful past. This team-up presented a rare look at the Hulk at his most peaceful and controlled.

1) Hulk and the Warbound (World War Hulk)

One of the Hulk’s most famous alliances happened during the “World War Hulk” story arc. Fueled by anger, Hulk returned to Earth with a group called the Warbound, seeking revenge on the Illuminati. He blamed them for the death of his wife while she was pregnant on the planet Sakaar. The Warbound included characters like Hiroim, Korg, Elloe Kaifi, Miek, No-Name, and Arch-E-5912, with Mung joining later. They fiercely fought Earth’s heroes, and Hulk specifically targeted Mister Fantastic, Iron Man, Black Bolt, and Doctor Strange, believing they had betrayed him. No one could defeat him, and the team disbanded only when Hulk discovered that one of the Warbound was actually responsible for his wife’s death.
