10 Best X-Men (Who Weren’t On The Main Team)

The X-Men are the most well-known team of mutants in the Marvel Universe, but they aren’t the only ones. Besides villainous groups like the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (now just called the Brotherhood), the Acolytes, and the Upstarts, several other heroic teams exist, including the New Mutants, X-Factor, Excalibur, and X-Force. Think of the X-Men as the Avengers of the mutant world – while they’re the main force, other teams focus on different areas. Over the years, there have been teams for training, government operations, covert missions, and just about any other kind of superhero work you can imagine. Mutants frequently switch between these teams, sharing their skills and strength to help in various ways.

The X-Men are the most famous mutant team, but many other mutants have achieved greatness independently. Some have become fan favorites and even surpassed their X-Men colleagues, either by joining the team later or finding more success outside of it. These ten mutants stand out as legends within the mutant world because of what they accomplished on their own.

10) Maverick

Maverick is a powerful mutant who hasn’t frequently joined major teams, but he’s a skilled fighter with a fascinating history. Originally named Christopher Nord, he was part of the Weapon X program and fought alongside Wolverine and Sabretooth in Team X. His mutant ability lets him absorb and redirect energy, and Weapon X also gave him enhanced healing. A veteran of decades of conflict, dating back to the Cold War, he often allies with—or manipulates—Wolverine. He runs his own mercenary business and frequently clashes with more heroic mutants. Recently, especially during the Krakoa era, Maverick has become a more compelling character, largely because his loyalties are always unpredictable.

When X-Factor (Vol. 1) first began, the original X-Men members went undercover as “mutant hunters” called the X-Terminators. Their mission was to appear as though they were eliminating mutants, but in reality, they were rescuing and training them. Rictor was one of those they took under their wing. He’s a powerful mutant with the ability to create seismic disturbances, but he’s best known for his romantic relationship with Shatterstar, which began when they both served on the covert mutant team X-Force and continued beyond. He’s been part of almost every mutant team except the X-Men, and even received training in mutant magic from Apocalypse. Despite not being a mainstream character, Rictor has a loyal following and is consistently considered a fan favorite.

Generation X often gets overlooked, but it introduced some memorable mutants – including Monet and Synch who later joined the main X-Men team. One member in particular, Chamber (Jonothan Starsmore), deserves more recognition. When his powers developed, psionic energy burst from his jaw and chest, dramatically changing his life. Though initially presented as a key character in Generation X, he never quite connected with a broad audience. However, he was – and remains – a favorite among many readers. His time as an X-Man in 2001, during Uncanny X-Men, was overshadowed by New X-Men, but both of his runs with Generation X were strong. Chamber is a genuinely fun character with a lot of untapped potential, and it’s time for him to get the spotlight he deserves.

7) Sunfire

Sunfire often joins the X-Men as a temporary member – he appears, argues with everyone, and then leaves again. He’s incredibly powerful, able to absorb radiation and generate plasma, essentially making him a miniature sun. While he doesn’t have a huge fanbase, he’s always been more compelling and capable than many realize. His confident, sometimes boastful, personality is actually quite entertaining, and fans like him wish he’d get more consistent opportunities to showcase his abilities. He’s even proven himself as an Avenger, notably in the first volume of Uncanny Avengers, showing he can contribute to any team.

6) Madrox

Jamie Madrox, though never an official X-Man, is considered one of the most powerful mutants. His ability lets him create copies of himself whenever he’s injured, and there doesn’t seem to be a limit to how many he can make. He can also merge these duplicates back into himself, gaining any knowledge or skills they’ve acquired – he famously sent a copy to Harvard and learned everything it did while attending. He worked with Moira MacTaggert and frequently led the mutant detective team X-Factor, which is where he gained a dedicated fanbase. More recently, he was a standout member of the X-Corp during the Krakoa era, and remains a popular, if lesser-known, mutant hero.

5) Domino

Domino is a consistently awesome mutant who doesn’t always get the recognition she deserves. While she’s best known as a key member of X-Force – often second-in-command early on – her unique ability to manipulate luck allows her to pull off incredible feats. She’s rejoined X-Force multiple times, but truly shined during the Krakoa era, becoming a vital part of the team and even receiving a compelling storyline dealing with the effects of trauma. Despite never officially being an X-Man, she’s more than earned the opportunity to join their ranks.

4) Havok

I’ve always been fascinated by Havok. He’s been an X-Man and a leader so many times, but honestly, I think he truly shines when he’s forging his own path. It’s a shame he’s always been overshadowed by Cyclops – that rivalry really seems to hold him back when he’s with the X-Men. Poor guy just can’t seem to catch a break, and he’s become notorious for being a mind control magnet! But when he’s given the chance to lead, like with X-Factor, he’s incredible. He even led the Avengers – something Cyclops never achieved! And I absolutely loved seeing him in Hellions during the Krakoa era; he was a standout. It’s clear to me: Havok is a truly great hero when he’s free to be himself, without constantly being measured against his brother.

3) Cannonball

The New Mutants comic book is a significant part of mutant lore, having launched the careers of many popular characters. Among them, Cannonball quickly became a key member and a leader, eventually joining and leading the X-Force team after Cable’s departure. He was the first New Mutant to become a full-fledged X-Man, serving on the team multiple times. He even became an Avenger during a celebrated run by Jonathan Hickman, where he met his future wife, Smashe. Cannonball is a powerful mutant, able to absorb energy from impacts and redirect it into a protective force field – he’s even defeated Gladiator, a feat very few can claim. He’s consistently ranked among the most powerful and enjoyable characters in the Marvel Universe.

2) Sunspot

Sunspot’s path to becoming a well-known hero is similar to Cannonball’s. He started as one of the original New Mutants before moving on to X-Force. His ability to absorb solar energy gives him incredible powers, including super strength, the ability to fly, invulnerability, and energy blasts. Although he hasn’t often been a core member of the X-Men, he’s served as an Avenger, even leading his own team, and was part of the Arakkii Brotherhood. Sunspot is a powerful fighter who often appears immature, but he’s actually a much more strategic and clever hero than people realize.

Cable, like Wolverine, paved the way for complex mutant heroes. Born Nathan Summers, he’s the son of Cyclops and a clone of Jean Grey named Madelyne Pryor. After being infected with a dangerous techno-organic virus by the villain Apocalypse, Nathan was sent to the future, trained as a soldier, and returned to the present to save the world. He became a leader, first with the New Mutants and then by creating X-Force, quickly becoming a fan favorite. While he’s joined the X-Men on occasion, Cable often operates independently, fighting battles across the globe as a skilled mutant warrior. He’s even teamed up with the Avengers. Beyond Wolverine, he’s one of the few mutants to consistently headline his own comic series. Though initially a product of the over-the-top ’90s style, Cable has evolved into one of the most popular and respected mutants around.
