For nearly a century, DC Comics has brought us countless iconic superheroes. It’s no wonder then that some of these long-standing characters have offspring who carry on their heroic duties. Notable DC heroes have expanded their family dynasties, paving the way for a new generation of superheroes. Often, these children possess their parents’ extraordinary abilities, teaming up with them to combat evil and shield the innocent. Moreover, in many DC Comics narratives, the concept of legacy is significant, leading some grown-up offspring to take on the roles once held by their parents.
Most significant DC Universe superheroes tend to have offspring. Some continue their parents’ heroic legacies, while others carve unique paths as self-made heroes. No matter the situation, these youngsters promise an exciting future for DC Comics.
1) Superman (Jon Kent)
Stepping onto the cinematic stage in 2015, I found myself as Jon Kent – son of DC’s legendary power couple, Superman and Lois Lane. Born with half-Kryptonian genes, I inherited my father’s remarkable abilities: super-strength, super-speed, flight, and heat-vision. At the tender age of 10, I donned the cape as Superboy. However, an encounter with a time-bending black hole compressed six years into just three weeks, leaving me at 17 years old. In this accelerated timeline, I took up the mantle of Superman when it was believed that my father and the rest of the Justice League were lost. Fortunately, they weren’t – a relief for us all! When he returned, we decided to share the Superman role. Kind-hearted, compassionate, and eager to champion the oppressed, I strive to be the embodiment of truth, justice, and a brighter tomorrow. In this short span, I’m already demonstrating immense potential to become the next icon of hope for many.
2) Jesse Quick
Jesse Chambers, also known as Jesse Quick, is the child of two legendary superheroes: Johnny Quick and Liberty Belle. As a young girl, Jesse’s father created a unique mathematical equation that granted its user access to the Speed Force. Fascinated by her parents’ heroic deeds, Jesse aspired to follow in their footsteps. Upon discovering the formula for the Speed Force, she adopted the persona of her mother, Liberty Belle, within the Justice Society. Later, she chose the name Jesse Quick to pay tribute to her father when Johnny emerged from retirement to join the JSA. Tragically, Johnny sacrificed his life saving Impulse from the malevolent speedster Savitar. Since then, Jesse has carried on her father’s legacy as a member of the Titans, Justice League, and Flash Family.
3) Jade and Obsidian
Jennifer-Lynn Haden, known as Jade, and Todd Rice, also called Obsidian, are the twin offspring of Golden Age Green Lantern Alan Scott and the villain Thorn. At birth, they were separated for adoption into different families, but their unique lineage didn’t determine their powers equally.
Jennifer, due to her father’s enchanted green Starheart Ring, gained a green hue in her skin and powers similar to a Green Lantern, without the need for a Power Ring. On the other hand, Todd inherited the ability to control shadows from his father’s encounter with shadow energy while battling Ian Karkull. He can traverse through shadows, plunge rooms into darkness, and compel individuals to confront their deepest fears.
When Jennifer and Todd reached maturity, they reconnected and joined forces with the new Justice Society, alongside their father.
4) Trinity
The latest superhero character, named Lizzie Prince (also known as Trinity), is the daughter of Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor. After Steve’s death at the hands of a villain called the Sovereign, Diana, who was deeply saddened, combined a part of her and Steve’s essence into a clay statue. With magic, this statue miraculously turned into a baby girl. Although Lizzie is currently just an infant, DC Comics has hinted at possible futures for Diana’s daughter. In one such future, Lizzie becomes friends with other superchildren like Jon Kent and Damian Wayne. Moreover, she leads the Justice League. Lizzie possesses Amazonian powers similar to her mother, and wields the three Lassos of Fate that give her varying levels of control over a person’s thoughts and emotions. If this future comes true, Lizzie seems set for a promising career as a superhero.
5) Thunder and Lighting
Anissa and Jennifer Pierce are the dynamic daughters of the superhero known as Black Lightning in Metropolis. Anissa, also known as Thunder, is the older sister who can increase her density, making her stronger and tougher. This power also lets her create shockwaves when she stomps on the ground. On the other hand, Jennifer, or Lightning, has powers similar to their father, allowing her to absorb and release electricity. Against his wishes, both girls started using their abilities as superheroes. Anissa joined a team of superheroes called the Outsiders, while Jennifer became part of the Justice Society. Although Jefferson initially worried for their safety, he now acknowledges that they have grown into capable heroes.
6) Green Arrow (Connor Hawke)
Connor Hawke is the son of Oliver Queen, also known as Green Arrow. Connor was born out of Oliver’s relationship with Sandra Hawke, but Oliver left them both before Connor was born because he wasn’t prepared to be a father. Instead, Connor grew up in a Buddhist monastery where he learned to master martial arts and archery. After Oliver died in an explosion, Connor took on the mantle of Green Arrow. He later joined the Justice League. When Oliver came back from the dead, they reconnected and made peace. Now, they work together to keep Star City safe.
7) Zatanna
Born to the sorcerer superhero known as Zatara during the Golden Age, Zatanna has emerged as one of the most formidable magic practitioners within the DC Multiverse. After her father was kidnapped by an evil witch, Zatanna dedicated herself to mastering the arcane arts in order to locate him. By speaking incantations backwards, Zatanna’s magical capabilities are essentially boundless. Much like her father, she employs her powers both as a superhero and as a renowned stage magician. As a member of both the Justice League and their mystical division, the Justice League Dark, Zatanna is celebrated for her powerful enchantments and unique charm, making her one of the most adored sorcerers in DC Comics. She exemplifies the proverbial child surpassing their parents.
8) Black Canary
Dinah Laurel Lance, often known as Black Canary, is the daughter of the original Black Canary from the Golden Age, Dinah Drake. From an early age, she was taught hand-to-hand combat by skilled fighters like boxer Wildcat and her martial arts instructor mother. Her extensive combat training spanning decades has made her one of DC Comics’ top martial artists, even rivaling Batman. Unlike her mother, Dinah possesses the natural ability to emit a deafening sonic scream called the “Canary Cry.” She uses this power and her fighting prowess to fight crime in Star City’s streets. Additionally, she is well-known for being married to the superhero archer, Green Arrow.
9) Thunderbolt and Surge
The West family grew when Wally West’s children, Iris and Jai, were born, who are surprisingly aged differently due to an extraordinary link to the Speed Force. While Iris resembles a ten-year-old, Jai appears more like an eight-year-old. Interestingly, their connections to the Speed Force have given them distinct abilities. Iris, also known as Thunderheart, shares her father’s speedster powers. On the other hand, Jai, known as Surge, can amplify his strength and teleport. Despite their youth, these remarkable siblings frequently join their father and the Flash Family to safeguard Central City and the DC Universe.
10) The Robins
Batman is recognized for giving shelter to children who have been left behind and training them to work alongside him in the fight against crime. Throughout his lengthy career, Bruce Wayne has adopted three individuals – Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, and Tim Drake, each of whom assumed the role of Robin. As they grew older, they branched out to become Gotham’s vigilantes known as Nightwing, Red Hood, and Red Robin respectively. The current Robin, Damian, is Bruce’s biological son born from his relationship with Talia al Ghul, an assassin. Initially trained by her to be a ruthless killer, Damian was taken in by Bruce who taught him the values of patience and compassion. Over time, he abandoned his violent ways and aims to meet his father’s expectations. Despite whether they are biologically related or not, each of them holds a special place in Bruce Wayne’s heart as they represent Batman’s most significant legacy.
