Superman is often seen as the perfect hero in the DC Universe, but he’s not invincible. While he has incredible powers – like heat vision, super strength, and flight – even Superman has vulnerabilities. His biggest flaw is actually his unwavering goodness; he’s almost too virtuous for his own benefit.
Superheroes with intelligence, ingenuity, or even a bit of trickery have a good chance of defeating him. All it needs is someone who can be unconventional – or find a way to use red sunlight – to show Superman that he’s not invincible.
10. Aquaman
Aquaman is frequently portrayed in comics as much more powerful than people realize, especially when he’s fighting in the ocean. Stories like Justice League: Throne of Atlantis demonstrate that Arthur Curry, with his control over the sea and his magical trident, can actually pose a serious challenge to Superman. The trident is capable of breaking through Superman’s skin, and Aquaman’s Atlantean magic can overcome Superman’s usual invulnerability.
As a huge movie fan, I’ve always thought about how a fight between Aquaman and Superman would really go down. And honestly, underwater, Aquaman has a massive edge. Superman needs the sun to stay powerful, and the deeper you go, the weaker he gets – we’ve seen that in the comics before, where long battles without sunlight really take a toll on him. In fact, in Aquaman Vol. 8, it’s shown that Arthur gets unbelievably strong underwater, strong enough to go toe-to-toe with even the most powerful characters. It makes you think, doesn’t it?
9. Shazam
Shazam and Superman have a long history of challenging each other in the comics, and their fight in ‘Kingdom Come’ is particularly memorable. Shazam’s magical abilities, especially his lightning, pose a real threat to Superman, whose strength isn’t enough to overcome magic. Because Superman is vulnerable to magical attacks, Billy Batson’s powers can actually break through his usual defenses.
Shazam is a uniquely dangerous character in comic books because he combines the unpredictable nature of a child with immense power. As seen in stories like Superman/Shazam: First Thunder, Superman often has trouble fighting Shazam, who is incredibly fast and wields powerful magic. Billy Batson’s ability to call down lightning makes him one of the few heroes capable of actually hurting Superman.
8. Wonder Woman
As a huge Wonder Woman fan, I’ve always believed she’s just as powerful as Superman, and the comics really show it! Especially in stories like Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia and Infinite Crisis, you see her go toe-to-toe with him. She’s not just strong, she’s a skilled fighter with incredible magical tools – like her Godkiller sword and Lasso of Truth – and a determination that won’t quit. That makes her a seriously formidable opponent, capable of beating even the Man of Steel.
In Justice League: Origin, Wonder Woman’s physical strength and fighting skills are equal to Superman’s. However, she’s more willing to go all-out in a fight, giving her an advantage. Superman’s reluctance to seriously injure a friend could be a problem, because Wonder Woman, thanks to her Amazonian training, will take advantage of any weakness – even his compassion.
7. Martian Manhunter
Martian Manhunter is often portrayed as being just as powerful as Superman. However, his greatest strength isn’t physical power – it’s his ability to read and control minds. Because Superman can be vulnerable to psychic attacks, Martian Manhunter could potentially win a fight before it even starts. Superman has even acknowledged J’onn as one of Earth’s most formidable beings, and their comic book battles demonstrate this.
6. The Flash (Barry Allen)
The Flash has demonstrated that speed can overcome brute strength. Because of his connection to the Speed Force, Barry Allen can move so quickly that Superman can’t respond, allowing Flash to strike repeatedly or even pass through Superman’s body, causing injury. The story of Flashpoint further illustrates how incredibly powerful and dangerous the Flash can be when he’s truly challenged.
Superman relies on being able to physically catch his opponents, and Barry Allen, also known as The Flash, understands this weakness. In Justice League Vol. 2, Barry proved he’s faster than Superman by actually winning a race against him. Because of his connection to the Speed Force, Barry could potentially win a fight before Superman even reacts.
5. Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)
Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern ring is incredibly powerful and useful in the DC Universe. In the comics, it has even given him the advantage over Superman. For example, in Green Lantern: Rebirth, Hal was able to create constructs strong enough to restrain Superman. The ring can also mimic red sunlight or Kryptonite, which weakens Superman, making it an effective weapon against him.
Hal is a powerful opponent thanks to his creative thinking and strategic skills. As seen in Justice League: Darkseid War, he’s quick to find and use his enemies’ vulnerabilities. While Superman has greater physical strength, Hal’s strong will and the versatility of his power ring make him a dangerous adversary.
4. Zatanna
Zatanna is a powerful magic user in the comics, capable of overcoming Superman’s usual defenses. As seen in stories like Justice League Dark and Seven Soldiers: Zatanna, she can cast incredibly strong spells with just a few spoken words, making her one of the DC Universe’s most formidable heroes. Because Superman is vulnerable to magic, Zatanna doesn’t need to rely on physical strength to win against him.
Zatanna is a powerful fighter because she’s incredibly resourceful and imaginative in battle. As demonstrated in Detective Comics #833-834, she can use magic both to attack and defend, letting her handle nearly any challenge. She’s even shown the ability to completely neutralize or remove opponents like Superman with a single spell.
3. Batman
Even Superman acknowledges that Batman could win in a fight if the situation was right. Their famous battle in The Dark Knight Returns demonstrates how Batman can strategically overcome Superman. By using Kryptonite and high-tech equipment, Batman can effectively counter Superman’s incredible powers.
Batman’s real strength in the comics lies in his knack for finding and using Superman’s vulnerabilities. The story Tower of Babel showcases how Batman has plans to stop each member of the Justice League, proving he’s always thinking ahead. Superman’s strong sense of ethics and hesitation to hurt Bruce Wayne also give Batman a significant advantage.
2. Doctor Fate
Doctor Fate is an incredibly powerful magic user, as shown in comics like Justice League Dark and Earth 2. Serving as a host for the Lords of Order, his abilities are almost unlimited – he can alter reality, call upon magical beings, and even imprison enemies in other dimensions. Simply put, Superman’s physical strength is ineffective against Doctor Fate’s magic.
Doctor Fate, as demonstrated in JSA #8, is incredibly powerful and can defeat even the strongest enemies without much difficulty. He can foresee what will happen and control the environment of a fight, which would put Superman at a significant disadvantage. A battle against Fate wouldn’t just be a loss for Superman; he’d be completely overwhelmed.
1. The Spectre
In comic books, the Spectre is a truly unstoppable power, famously appearing in stories like Crisis on Infinite Earths and Day of Vengeance. As the physical form of divine retribution, he’s far more powerful than even Superman. The Spectre can change reality itself, completely erase people or things from existence, and deliver instant, powerful judgment without even trying.
During the Infinite Crisis storyline, the Spectre’s power is demonstrated as being immense—even the entire Justice League has trouble controlling him. Superman’s incredible strength and ability to withstand attacks are useless against a being with cosmic power. Any attempt to fight the Spectre is destined to fail.
