10 DC Villains Who Defined the 1970s

The 1970s were a time of change for DC Comics, marking the end of the optimistic ‘Silver Age’ in 1975 and the beginning of the ‘Bronze Age’. This new era saw comics explore more complex and mature themes, introducing a wave of dangerous new villains. A key figure in this shift was Jack Kirby, a celebrated writer and artist who joined DC in 1970. Among his many creations, Kirby is best known for the New Gods, and their home worlds of New Genesis and Apokolips. Apokolips, a truly nightmarish planet, is ruled by powerful, god-like beings who have become some of the most formidable enemies in the entire DC universe.

In the 1970s, DC Comics started creating villains who were much more brutal and realistic, taking advantage of relaxed censorship rules. This was also the first time villains got their own dedicated story arcs and limited-series comics. DC introduced a number of truly memorable and frightening supervillains during this era, ranging from deadly killers to powerful, evil gods.

10) Count Vertigo

I’ve been a fan of Green Arrow for years, and Count Vertigo is definitely one of his most memorable villains! His real name is Werner Zytle, and his story is actually pretty tragic. He was born into a royal family from a country called Vlatava, but he had a problem with his balance. They tried to fix it with an implant, but it ended up giving him incredible powers – he could mess with people’s equilibrium! He could make them sick, create illusions, even hypnotize them. He used these powers to try and take back his country, and now he’s not only the ruler of Vlatava but also runs a huge criminal organization that Green Arrow is constantly battling. It’s a really compelling backstory, and he’s a seriously dangerous opponent.

9) Kalibak

Kalibak, first born son of the villain Darkseid, first appeared in 1971. While not as intelligent as his father, Kalibak is a powerful and brutal warrior who serves as Darkseid’s top enforcer. Driven by a thirst for battle and unwavering loyalty, he’s one of the strongest fighters on Apokolips. He fights with savage intensity and uses the Beta-Club, a weapon that can inflict excruciating pain. Kalibak constantly clashes with his half-brother, Orion, a heroic New God, viewing him as his greatest competition and desperately trying to prove himself as Darkseid’s most powerful son. Their battles have caused widespread destruction on Earth.

8) Manhunters

The Manhunters are relentless androids first seen in 1975, and their chilling motto is that no one can escape them. Created 3 billion years ago by the Guardians of the Universe to be an intergalactic police force, a flaw in their programming caused them to see all life as a danger to order. They are infamous for wiping out trillions of beings in Space Sector 666. Even though the Guardians replaced them with the Green Lantern Corps, the Manhunters always find a way to return, making them one of the Green Lanterns’ most dangerous enemies. They are a powerful army of killer robots and are heavily armed.

7) Lady Shiva

First appearing in 1975, Sandra Wu-San, known as Lady Shiva, is widely considered the world’s greatest martial artist and a supremely dangerous fighter. She trained in martial arts with her sister, Carolyn, but after Carolyn was murdered, Sandra abandoned all restraint and committed herself to becoming a flawless assassin. Lady Shiva often walks the line between villain and hero, having trained many top fighters, including Batman and members of the League of Assassins. She is also the mother of Cassandra Cain, the second Batgirl. Though their relationship is strained, the complex dynamic between Shiva and her daughter has provided rich material for both characters’ stories.

6) DeSaad

DeSaad is a cruel and deceitful character who serves as Darkseid’s main advisor and torturer on the planet Apokolips. Originally a kind New God from the peaceful world of New Genesis, he was corrupted by Darkseid during a secret visit. This transformation turned him into a spiteful and malicious being, leading him to join Darkseid on Apokolips. Though not physically strong, DeSaad is incredibly cunning and uses elaborate torture devices, making his victims wish for an end to their suffering. Despite being a subservient figure, he remains one of the most ruthless characters in the entire DC Universe.

5) Granny Goodness

First appearing in 1971, Granny Goodness is a truly evil and ruthless figure on the planet Apokolips. As a powerful New God, she’s in charge of training Apokolips’ army of Parademons. Her most disturbing work happens at a place called the Orphanage, where she kidnaps young girls, tortures them, and brainwashes them into becoming the Female Furies – Darkseid’s highly skilled and deadly personal guard. Once a slave herself, Granny Goodness rose through the ranks thanks to her intelligence and cruelty. Now, she’s a key leader and trainer for Darkseid’s forces, making her one of his most trusted followers.

4) Man-Bat

I’ve always felt sorry for Kirk Langstrom, a brilliant scientist who became the tragic Man-Bat. Back in 1970, he was trying to fix his hearing loss and, in a risky move, created a serum using bat DNA. It was a disaster, turning him into this huge, terrifying bat creature against his will! As Man-Bat, he’s incredibly strong, can fly with massive wings, and has these really dangerous claws and sonar abilities. What’s really sad is he doesn’t want to be this monster and is constantly searching for a cure. He even had a moment where he managed to control the Man-Bat side of himself and joined Justice League Dark, which was amazing! Sadly, it didn’t last, and he’s back to being a frightening threat to Gotham, soaring through the skies as a villain.

3) Talia al Ghul

Talia al Ghul is a dangerous and complex figure in Batman’s world, known as both a ruthless enemy and a passionate love interest. First appearing in 1971, she’s the daughter of the immortal Ra’s al Ghul and trained to be a master assassin, skilled in every form of combat. Talia often struggles with divided loyalties – to her father and his League of Assassins, and to Batman, with whom she has a son named Damian Wayne, who later became Robin. Despite her feelings for Batman, Talia’s desire for power has led her to commit increasingly evil acts, even trying to kill Batman and Damian. She’s a brilliant criminal who has surpassed her father in ambition and become one of the most formidable threats on the planet.

2) Ra’s al Ghul

Ra’s al Ghul, first appearing in 1971, is one of Batman’s most dangerous and cunning enemies. His name means “the Demon’s Head,” and he’s lived for centuries thanks to the restorative Lazarus Pit. Over time, he built the League of Assassins and developed a belief that humanity is a destructive force. He aims to drastically reduce the world’s population to save the planet, and his plans have led to the downfall of many civilizations. Like his daughter, Talia, Ra’s wants Batman to take over his violent mission, but Batman always resists. Ra’s remains a persistent danger due to his intelligence, fighting ability, and effectively immortal life.

1) Darkseid

First appearing in 1970, Darkseid—originally known as Uxas—is the ultimate villain in DC Comics. He embodies pure evil and is known for being incredibly intelligent, powerful, and cruel. Darkseid relentlessly pursues the Anti-Life Equation, hoping to control all life in the universe, and commands a terrifying army to achieve his goals. He’s been a key villain in major DC storylines like Rock of Ages and Final Crisis, and currently features prominently in DC K.O. and the Absolute Universe. As the source of all evil, Darkseid has rightfully earned his reputation as DC Comics’ greatest villain.
