10 Essential Marvel Horror Comics (That Aren’t Just Marvel Zombies)

With Halloween just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to relax with a warm pumpkin spice drink and enjoy a good scare! The Marvel Zombies animated series has been a popular choice for many Marvel fans, introducing them to the classic zombie stories from the comics. While Marvel Zombies is often considered the scariest and most unsettling series Marvel offers, it’s definitely not the only horror comic they’ve published.

As a horror fan, I’ve seen a lot of scary comics over the years, and Marvel – the House of Ideas – has definitely delivered its share. Today, I want to share ten must-read Marvel comics for anyone craving a good scare. So get comfy, maybe brew a pumpkin spice latte, and prepare to be spooked – these comics are guaranteed to keep you up all night!

10) Journey into Mystery (1952)

Before it became known for Thor, Journey into Mystery was Marvel’s first attempt at horror comics. It actually started before Marvel’s earlier version, Atlas Comics, even existed! This series is a true classic and remains one of Marvel’s scariest horror collections. If you enjoy classic horror stories about everyday people facing terrifying situations, this is the series for you. It established the blueprint for all future Marvel horror and, while often delightfully cheesy and old-fashioned, still includes some genuinely frightening tales.

9) Absolute Carnage

If you enjoy over-the-top, incredibly violent action like you’d find in Mortal Kombat, then Absolute Carnage is for you. The story brings back Kleetus Cassidy, determined to unleash extreme violence on anyone who has ever bonded with a symbiote. His goal? To collect their unique genetic codes and free the ancient god Knull from his cosmic prison. True to Carnage’s style, it’s a visually shocking and incredibly bloody story, even dipping into horror elements to make the carnage even more terrifying. This comic is perfect for fans who love gore, intense action, and truly unhinged villains.

8) “Earthfall” — Uncanny X-Men #232

Even though it’s just one issue, this story creates a genuinely frightening experience. It’s the turning point that elevates the Brood from a minor X-Men foe to a truly terrifying, Xenomorph-level threat. The story unfolds like a classic horror tale, beginning with a shocking scene: a Brood ship crashes to Earth, resulting in widespread destruction. If you’re looking for a short, creepy read with a monster-from-space vibe, this issue delivers.

7) Hellstorm by Warren Ellis

This collection features issues #12-21 of Hellstorm: Prince of Lies and Druid #1-4, showcasing Warren Ellis’s take on Daimon Hellstrom, the Son of Satan. The stories plunge Hellstorm into brutal conflicts with cults, demons, and all things occult. It’s a supernatural horror fan’s dream, complete with an ongoing war between Heaven and Hell, and a desperate search for Satan’s true name. Expect a classic horror tale filled with flawed, often monstrous characters who rarely have a good day.

6) Damnation

As a fan, I was completely hooked by this four-issue series! It’s wild to see Mephisto actually bring Hell to Earth. Doctor Strange tries to fix Las Vegas, but Mephisto uses that connection to turn the whole city into his personal nightmare, and everyone inside becomes these terrifying, Ghost Rider-esque creatures. Wong quickly pulls together a new team of Midnight Sons to fight back, leading to a massive showdown with the demon and an army of heroes under his control. And let me tell you, Ghost Rider really shines in this one! It feels like the perfect setup for a big Marvel horror event – it’s genuinely scary with all these demonic forces unleashing chaos, but still has that awesome superhero action we all love. It’s a truly epic and explosive read.

5) Blade (2006)

Every good list of horror comics needs a vampire story, and you can’t go wrong with Blade. While all of Blade’s comics are enjoyable for their action-packed vampire fights, this particular series is special because it really defines what makes the character so great. It strikes the perfect balance of fun, over-the-top action, intense violence, and genuinely creepy monsters. Plus, this series connects Blade to the wider Marvel Universe in exciting ways – it even starts with a battle against a vampire version of Spider-Man! It gives us Blade’s best origin story and delivers plenty of satisfying vampire-slaying action. It’s a truly fantastic read from start to finish.

4) Werewolf By Night (1972)

When it comes to classic comic book werewolves, it doesn’t get any better than Marvel’s Werewolf by Night, and his original series remains enjoyable today. If you’re looking for classic monster horror, with a protagonist battling his inner demons, this is the series for you. While it doesn’t reinvent the wheel with its ‘monster of the week’ format, sometimes you just want a comforting story about an anti-hero and his curse. Plus, this series is notable for introducing Moon Knight, making it a must-read for that reason alone.

3) Immortal Hulk

Many fans consider Immortal Hulk the best Hulk series ever created. It brought the character back to its terrifying horror origins, focusing on a Hulk who was virtually unkillable, returning to life with every sunset. Beyond the stunning artwork and intense violence, the comic brilliantly explores the psychological horror of a being like the Hulk. A deeply disturbing mystery drives the story forward, and the frightening ‘Devil Hulk’ will truly keep you on the edge of your seat. Immortal Hulk redefined the character and sparked a renewed interest in horror within Marvel Comics.

2) Ghost Rider by Jason Aaron

Ghost Rider is Marvel’s standout horror hero – who wouldn’t be captivated by the flaming-skulled Spirit of Vengeance, punishing the wicked? Many fans believe Jason Aaron’s run on the character is the best, and it’s easy to see why. It deeply explores Ghost Rider’s history, taking it in surprising new directions, while still delivering the intense monster battles and demonic conflicts readers expect. The story builds to an incredible climax: a massive showdown between the Spirits of Vengeance and a malevolent angel, fought right in the streets of Heaven. What more could you ask for?

1) The Tomb of Dracula (1972)

If you’re looking for a good Dracula comic from Marvel, go with the original series. It’s a true gothic classic, creating a spooky mood that nothing else quite matches thanks to its perfect blend of artwork and storytelling. It avoids cheesy horror tropes, offering a complex and fascinating portrayal of the vampire lord – he’s both captivating and genuinely frightening. While the series also introduced Blade, the vampire hunter, the story itself remains the main draw. From the start, this comic pulls you in and creates an incredibly atmospheric experience, making it a perfect read for Halloween.

As a huge movie and comic book fan, I’ve been diving into some seriously spooky Marvel stories lately, and I wanted to share ten that I think are essential reading for Halloween. They really got under my skin! I’m curious though – which Marvel comic scared you the most, and are there any other titles you’d add to this list of must-reads?
