In the development of superheroes, it became common for them to maintain secret identities as a way to shield themselves and their loved ones from villains. This is often achieved through the use of masks or discreet glasses changes. Nevertheless, not all heroes adhere to this convention. Some superheroes openly disclose their true names and histories to the public. Initially, these heroes might have kept their identities hidden, but later chose to discard this secrecy. In some cases, heroes forgo superhero aliases altogether, preferring to use their real names while combating crime. The motivation behind this varies: they could be sovereigns of a foreign nation, have unalterable appearances, or prefer not to live a dual life.
In contrast to many superheroes who maintain a secret existence, some characters in both the Marvel and DC realms choose to unveil their identities openly for all to see.
1) Thor
In a twist of events, the mighty Norse deity known as Thor, the God of Thunder, didn’t require a hidden self. For more than a millennium, the valiant deeds of Thor Odinson, the ruler of Asgard, were renowned across the Nine Realms. However, when Marvel introduced him in 1962, he did possess an alternate identity: Dr. Donald Blake, a human doctor with a limp who used a cane. In reality, this cane was a stand-in for his hammer Mjolnir. Odin had transformed Thor into Dr. Blake and sent him to Earth to teach him humility. Initially, Dr. Blake/Thor maintained separate identities, but eventually, the God of Thunder abandoned his human persona and resumed his divine duties.
2) Luke Cage
In an exceptional instance where a fictional character’s superhero identity dominated his real life, a man named Carl Jones opted to legally change his identity to Luke Cage. Originally a convict, Carl was subjected to a super soldier experiment that granted him extraordinary strength and indestructible skin. With these new abilities, he managed to break out of prison. On the run as a fugitive, Carl assumed the pseudonym “Luke Cage” and took on the role of the Mercenary for Rent, also known as Power Man. Over time, he abandoned the Power Man moniker. Instead, he chose to legally adopt his self-made alias and carry on his heroic duties. Luke Cage has since earned widespread respect, established a family, and joined teams of superheroes like the Avengers and Defenders.
3) Beast Boy
If you possess green skin, maintaining a secret identity is more or less futile. Garfield Logan, popularly known as Beast Boy, proudly accepts his green complexion and shape-shifting powers to achieve stardom. When he’s not safeguarding the planet as part of the Teen Titans, Garfield can be found gracing numerous films and television shows. Inspired by his adoptive mother, Rita Farr, who was an actress herself (and goes by Elasti-Girl), he took on the role of an extraterrestrial character in the successful TV series Space Trek. In addition to this, Garfield is a well-known social media personality and influencer. It seems that being green has its advantages sometimes.
4) Doctor Strange
Initially, Doctor Strange was known as Dr. Stephen Strange, an accomplished neurosurgeon with a PhD who spent years working at New York Hospital. However, after a car accident left him with injured hands, he turned to the mystic arts for healing. His mastery of magic soon transformed him into a superhero, but unlike many other heroes, he chose not to conceal his identity because his hero name was simply his professional title – Doctor Strange. Given his unique and intriguing name, it made little sense for him to hide it from the public eye.
5) Wonder Woman
As the princess hailing from the mystical realm of Themyscira, I initially chose to conceal my royal and divine lineage by adopting the secret identity of Diana Prince when I first stepped foot in Man’s World. For years, I shielded both my superhero persona and Amazon heritage from public view. However, during the 1980s, I decided to abandon my human disguise and openly declare myself as Princess Diana of Themyscira to the world.
My decision to reveal my true identity was partly driven by my appointment as Themyscira’s official ambassador, a role that demanded transparency. Pretending to be human no longer served a purpose in this new context. Moreover, I felt immense pride and eagerness to serve and represent my people on the global stage, which fueled my desire to step out of the shadows and embrace my identity as an Amazon and superhero.
6) Black Panther
I’m proud to be part of the long-standing tradition in Wakanda where the mantle of the Black Panther is inherited through the royal bloodline, a fact that is widely recognized by both the people within our nation and those across the globe. Given my birthright as the King of Wakanda, I find no need to hide my identity as the Black Panther. Instead, I proudly represent Wakanda on two fronts: as a superhero safeguarding peace and justice, and as a leader upholding our rich heritage and might.
7) Aquaman
Similar to Black Panther, Aquaman, also known as Arthur Curry, isn’t just a superhero; he is a king, ruling over the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. Unlike many other heroes who keep their identities hidden, Arthur doesn’t hide his from others due to his unique origins. Born to a human lighthouse keeper and the queen of Atlantis, Arthur needed to assert his identity and lineage among the people of Atlantis to claim the throne. He also revealed his identity to the surface world, serving as a bridge between the two civilizations, showing that harmonious coexistence is achievable. By openly acknowledging his identity and origin, Aquaman has made considerable strides in bridging the gap between the two worlds.
8) Iron Man
In the initial Iron Man movie, Tony Stark publicly unveiled his superhero persona at the film’s conclusion. Unlike in the comics where he maintained his secret identity as Iron Man for decades, Tony claimed that Iron Man was merely his bodyguard. However, in 2002, tired of concealing his true nature, he chose to protect a dog from getting hit by a car while wearing his Iron Man suit, thus exposing himself to the world. This act of bravery skyrocketed his popularity. Later, this decision to reveal his identity inspired him to collaborate with the government in compelling other superheroes to disclose their identities to the public during the events leading up to the Civil War.
9) Zatanna
As a globally recognized stage magician, much like my famous father Zatara from the Golden Age, I have no qualms about shining under the spotlight and sharing my heroic feats with the world. Just as he did, I captivate crowds with my breathtaking magic acts. But unlike many believe, the magic I perform is genuine, placing me among the mightiest sorcerers in the DC Universe. Unlike some superheroes who prefer secret identities, I don’t bother with a code name, and I take on crime while wearing the same outfit that graces the stage. With an unmatched presence both onstage and battlefields, it’s no wonder that I am one of the most revered DC Comics heroes who stands boldly without concealing myself behind illusions.
10) The Fantastic Four
As a die-hard movie buff, I’d put it this way: The Fantastic Four have always been open books when it comes to their identities – their names echoing across the globe as a testament to their heroic deeds. Since they first gained their powers, they’ve used their superhero and real names without hesitation. Marvel’s very own first family aren’t about hiding behind secret identities; they’re scientists, explorers at heart, with the superhero gig coming second. Ben Grimm, aka the Thing, well, he’d have no chance of keeping a secret identity given his rock-solid appearance. Their superhero names are just a throwback to the times when such conventions were popular. And while they might not be your typical superheroes, they all prefer to go by their real ones: Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben.
