As a die-hard comic book fan, I’ve always been intrigued by the extraordinary origins of our favorite superheroes. From Marvel and DC Comics, we’ve seen countless heroes acquire their powers in harrowing circumstances. Be it a radioactive spider bite or a journey through cosmic rays, these events often mark the beginning of their heroic journeys.
However, some heroes have faced even more tragic origins. A prime example is Blade, whose mother’s death during childbirth bestowed upon him his vampire-slaying abilities. Many of these heroes have emerged from terrible circumstances, their powers born out of trauma, yet they’ve managed to rise above and become champions for good.
In fact, it’s not uncommon in Marvel and DC origin stories for people to gain powers in ways that could have easily led to their destruction. But they persevered, using their newfound abilities to fight for justice rather than succumbing to despair. It’s this resilience that makes them truly heroic.
Let’s explore some less-than-ideal methods by which certain Marvel and DC characters acquired their powers, and the ways they turned their hardships into greatness.
In this way, the sentence retains its original meaning but is written in a more natural and conversational style.
10) Blade

From birth, Blade found himself saddled with supernatural powers due to a traumatic event that affected everyone around him. Eric Brooks was born in London in 1929. His mother, Vanessa, lived in Soho and sought medical attention during her difficult pregnancy. Unfortunately, the doctor she encountered was Deacon Frost, a vampire who attacked Vanessa while she gave birth, thus infusing Blade with vampire enzymes as he emerged into the world. Before Frost could claim young Eric’s life, he fled the scene, allowing Eric to mature into the formidable vampire slayer known as Blade. Among all vampires, Deacon Frost was the one that Blade longed to annihilate most fiercely, second only to Dracula.
9) Plastic Man

Typically, spectators perceive Plastic Man as a jester and a comedic hero. Nonetheless, his backstory serves as a poignant reminder of tragedy. Initially, Patrick O’Brian was a small-time crook who was contracted to pilfer something from a chemical facility. Unfortunately, they were apprehended by a guard during the heist, leading to a firefight. A bullet struck a chemical container, causing its contents to spill onto Patrick. As they fled the scene, his friends tossed him from their vehicle and abandoned him, presuming him dead. Struggling to understand the bizarre happenings befalling him, he eventually discovered how to reform himself. With time, he found it fitting to exact revenge, all while cultivating a sharp, sarcastic wit – perhaps an adaptation born from the distress inflicted upon him as he gained his powers.
8) Daredevil

Daredevil didn’t have any inherent superhuman abilities; instead, an accident during his childhood enhanced his senses. His father, the boxer Jack Murdock, instilled in him a strong sense of morality to guide him away from his own past mistakes and towards a more virtuous path. However, Matt Murdock’s life took an unexpected turn when he bravely shielded a blind man from an oncoming truck, only to be sprayed with a radioactive substance that fell from the vehicle, causing his blindness. Tragically, Jack refused to manipulate fights for a better example to Matt, which ultimately led to his death. As a child, Matt started to comprehend the heightened nature of his senses, and it was this trauma that shaped him into Daredevil.
7) Jessica Jones

As I sat down to watch Jessica Jones, I couldn’t help but be drawn into her harrowing backstory. You see, she was just a teenager when a tragic event turned her life upside-down. While traveling with her family, their car was involved in a catastrophic collision with a military convoy transporting radioactive substances. The accident claimed the lives of her entire family and left Jessica clinging to consciousness for months on end.
Upon waking from her coma, she found herself in an orphanage – a far cry from the loving home she once knew. However, it was soon discovered that the radioactive chemicals from the accident had bestowed upon her extraordinary powers: superhuman strength and durability. And so, Jessica Jones, a once ordinary girl, became something much more.
6) Swamp Thing

The transformation of Alec Holland, a scientist, into the Swamp Thing unfolded as a chilling tale of horror. He had made a groundbreaking discovery by creating a solution that could resolve global food shortage issues. However, when Alec refused to share his formula with the malevolent leader of the Conclave, he ordered two men to assassinate not only Alec but also his wife. In the ensuing chaos, Alec was knocked unconscious, and a bomb was set off in his lab. When the laboratory exploded, a gravely injured Alec managed to escape the flames by plunging into the swamp. As his formula intermingled with the swamp’s essence, it absorbed Alec’s memories and consciousness, resulting in the emergence of the Swamp Thing – an entity who believed himself to be none other than Holland.
5) Drax the Destroyer

Drax the Destroyer’s backstory is intricate and involves multiple characters. Originally, there was Arthur Douglas, a human on Earth who tragically died alongside his wife when Thanos, flying over the Mojave Desert in his spaceship, intentionally destroyed their car during a covert mission. However, their daughter miraculously survived and was taken by Thanos’ father Mentor to be raised on Titan, where she later became Moondragon. In a twist of events, Arthur himself was resurrected and transformed into Drax the Destroyer, with all memories of his family erased to foster his ruthless warrior spirit. However, this transformation gave rise to another aspect of his identity – that of an Avatar of Life. Despite losing everything he held dear, this transformation made him a weapon of destruction without full comprehension of his purpose.
4) Deadpool

Deadpool’s background is marked by darkness, which likely shaped his quick-witted, sarcastic demeanor. His childhood wasn’t ideal, and after maturing, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Special Forces. This eventually led him to join a covert military assassination squad backed by the CIA. During this period, he was diagnosed with 34 inoperable cancerous growths, ended a relationship to spare his girlfriend pain, and braced for his impending death. However, when a Canadian agency called Department K presented a potential cure through their Weapon X program, they inserted Wolverine’s healing factor into him, seemingly curing his cancer. Unfortunately, the return of his cancer caused disfiguring changes in his body, leading to his expulsion from the program and hospitalization at a Canadian Hospice. There, the head of the facility, Dr. Killebrew, subjected Wade to endless torment. Eventually, his healing factor activated powerfully, allowing him to survive numerous near-death experiences before ultimately breaking free and adopting the persona of the Merc with a Mouth, seeking vengeance against all those involved.
3) X-23

As a devoted Marvel fan, I can’t help but be moved by the heart-wrenching tale of X-23, a heroine whose backstory is as gripping as any blockbuster movie. Unlike many other heroes, Laura Kinney, also known as X-23, isn’t an ordinary individual. She’s a clone of Wolverine, brought to life in a cold, clinical facility with the sole purpose of being a lethal weapon. Sarah Kinney, who became my surrogate mother, tried her best to provide me with a semblance of a normal upbringing amidst the labyrinthine walls of that facility.
Dr. Zander Rice, the ruthless head of the facility, subjected me to horrific experiments. He irradiated me, hoping it would awaken my dormant mutant gene. When he deemed me not vicious enough for his tastes, he unleashed a potent chemical concoction that made me lose control, leading to the brutal deaths of those around me – even my esteemed mentor, Tanaka, wasn’t spared.
At only 11 years old, I was thrust into a world where assassination missions became part of daily life. Sarah, seeing the cruelty and inhumanity unfolding before her eyes, sacrificed her own life to help me escape that nightmarish existence. In just 11 short years, I experienced more trauma than most heroes endure in a lifetime.
2) Cyborg

In DC Comics, Cyborg is generally portrayed with a cheerful demeanor and a tendency towards levity. Although this character trait underwent some changes after the New 52, he remains more optimistic than one might expect given his backstory. Despite the modifications in the New 52, his origins remain consistent with both the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) by Zack Snyder and his initial comic book origin story. Victor Stone was a popular high school football player, whose father, Silas Stone, was a brilliant scientist. When Darkseid attempted to invade Earth, an explosion from a Fatherbox occurred while Victor was in the lab. This should have resulted in his death, but his father employed technology to transform him into a cyborg. As a result, Victor not only experienced the pain of his origin but also understood that his life would never be the same.
1) Rocket Raccoon

As a devoted fan, I’d rephrase that narrative from Rocket Raccoon’s perspective:
“My origin story, among the heroes of Marvel or DC Comics, is one that’s etched deep into my being, particularly for animal lovers. You see, I was just a young raccoon, snatched away and turned into a service animal for an inmate at Halfworld Asylum for the Criminally Insane. It was there that cold, mechanical stewards performed a painful surgery to bestow intelligence and awareness upon us animals. By the time I was only one year old, my life took a drastic turn.
Buried beneath layers of pain, I saw my new exoskeleton and clothing not as reminders of my torment, but as tokens of friendship given by those who cared. It was then that I realized I had been gifted with unique abilities, and felt compelled to use them to protect the vulnerable animals on this planet. At just six years old, I made a vow to stand up for what’s right.
From the moment of my capture, I was treated as an object, hurt, tortured, and never given a break. It’s no surprise that my heart beats with a fierce hatred. But as a hero, I channel this emotion into fighting for justice and protecting those who can’t protect themselves.
