In a recent update, it’s been disclosed that the renowned director who brought Star Wars: Clone Wars to life almost had his own unique interpretation of Superman, but it ultimately didn’t pan out. Although Star Wars is now involved in numerous ambitious shows and films under Disney, an animated series still holds a special place in fans’ hearts after all these years – the 2D micro series created by Genndy Tartakovsky, who is also known for Samurai Jack and Dexter’s Laboratory, produced by Lucasfilm. This series helped to bridge the narrative gaps between Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.
1) The brief episodes presented a unique perspective on Star Wars that continues to be impactful even today. It was nearly realized that Tarkovsky would share an animated short focusing on Superman in the early 2020s, though the project eventually fell through. When questioned by Nexus Point News about possible future developments for this short, Tarkovsky disclosed that it was a temporary alignment of events, and he has since moved back to his original projects.
Star Wars: Clone Wars Director Almost Took on Superman
Tartakovsky expressed that his previous Superman project was merely a fleeting opportunity. At the time, everything seemed perfect – he had the time, the idea resonated, and all pieces fell into place. But circumstances shifted, and it vanished. Currently, he’s more focused on nurturing his own ideas rather than delving into someone else’s intellectual property (IP). Although he might reconsider in the future, for now, he’s involved with several original projects in development, including a TV show and a movie. Essentially, working on originals is what truly invigorates him.
Not only have I worked on ‘Star Wars’, but I consider it a remarkable opportunity, arguably the peak of intellectual properties to be associated with. Once the go-to for exploring this franchise’s missing era, the animated series known as ‘Star Wars: Clone Wars’ was later replaced by a CG animated show that excluded it from the main canon. Initially airing on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block, the episodes were only five minutes long. If you haven’t had a chance to watch this series yet, Disney+’s library has it all available.
What’s Next for Genndy Tartakovsky?

Currently, Tartakovsky appears to be focusing on new projects rather than tackling high-profile IPs or revisiting his past works at present. However, he does have several upcoming releases in the pipeline for the foreseeable future. As of now, the third season of “Primal” is tentatively set for release early next year through Adult Swim, but no specific launch date has been officially confirmed yet. To add to this, the director recently debuted the R-rated film “Fixed” on Netflix this past summer.
Last year, Adult Swim unveiled that Tartakovsky was developing a fresh, original series titled “Heist Safari” with them, but since then, no substantial updates have been shared. With multiple projects currently underway, it’s understandable why he might not be ready to tackle someone else’s intellectual property right now. This is particularly significant considering his unique position to create originals in a competitive animation market.
