Open-world games are known for being incredibly lengthy, often taking over 100 hours to complete. Some, like Crimson Desert, could take months! This can lead to burnout for fans of the genre. If you’re feeling that way – and we’re guessing you might be if you’re reading this – you might be looking for a shorter game, maybe one you can finish in a weekend. You’ve come to the right place – we’ve got you covered.
Many open-world games demonstrate that you don’t have to choose between a huge, immersive world and a manageable game length. Whether it’s a high-profile title similar to GTA or a lesser-known indie game, these titles are perfect when you have limited time. They offer a great break between longer, more demanding games, letting you enjoy the best parts of open-world gaming without a massive time commitment.
5. Lake

I absolutely loved playing Lake when I first experienced it, and I worried that returning for the Christmas DLC might not feel as special. However, driving through the snowy landscapes and delivering packages to the game’s wonderful characters, I found myself just as captivated by the world, story, and relaxing gameplay. Having spent many hours in the beautiful town of Providence Oaks and played the game repeatedly, I can confidently say that Lake is one of the best indie open-world games I’ve ever played.
In the charming open-world game Lake, you play as a delivery driver in the town of Providence Oaks, figuring out what to do with your life. The game subtly encourages you to reflect on your own choices as you get to know the town’s residents, learn their stories, and enjoy the peaceful scenery. You might even find romance and listen to the radio along the way! Lake offers around 7 hours of gameplay, making it a perfect, relaxing experience for a cozy weekend.
4. Caravan SandWitch

I was immediately drawn to Caravan SandWitch when I first saw the trailer. Its unique art style, reminiscent of Moebius, created a beautiful but unsettling world that felt like it was falling apart. Thankfully, the full game lived up to the hype. It’s a stunning open-world adventure with a deeply emotional story. The gameplay, similar to Death Stranding, involves exploring a small, detailed world on your own, using your truck to solve puzzles, discover hidden secrets, and ultimately uncover the central mystery.
Okay, so I just finished playing Caravan SandWitch, and wow, it’s one of those games that really stays with you. Seriously, I can’t get the theme song, Pensée Dérobée, out of my head! The world they’ve built is absolutely gorgeous and unlike anything I’ve seen, and I really connected with the characters, especially the main character, Sauge. I don’t usually rave about games, but I only recommend the ones that truly grab me, and this one did. It’s an open-world indie game, and while it’s about 8 hours long, I’m still thinking about it days later. You really should check it out!
3. Mafia 2

I have really strong memories of watching my older brother play Mafia 2 when I was a kid, peering over his shoulder the whole time. Now that I’m older, I’ve played it myself countless times, and I’m still blown away by how massive and detailed Empire Bay is. It really builds on everything that was great about the first Mafia game, but in a big way. The story is way more action-packed and moves at a perfect pace, the world feels so much more alive and interactive, and the combat is just more intense and has a lot more variety.
If you’re a fan of the Grand Theft Auto series, Mafia 2 is a fantastic open-world game to try. While it doesn’t have the same over-the-top craziness as GTA, it offers a compelling story and a large city, Empire Bay, to explore as a complex character. The game takes around 15 hours to complete, depending on how much you enjoy the atmosphere, and it’s a thoroughly engaging experience perfect for playing over a weekend.
2. Atlas Fallen: Reign Of Sand

When Atlas Fallen first came out, honestly, it didn’t make a great impression. A lot of people, including me, found the story pretty weak and the game was plagued with bugs and a really dull open world. If it had stayed that way, I probably wouldn’t be telling you about it now, maybe just because it was a quick play-through. But thankfully, the developers really listened and released Atlas Fallen: Reign of Sand, and it’s a completely different experience! They added new voice acting, completely rewrote the story, filled the world with things to do, let you unlock cool armor, added a whole new area to explore, and just improved everything. Reign of Sand feels like a true 2.0 version of the game, and it makes recommending it so much easier.
The latest update significantly improves Atlas Fallen, making it a truly enjoyable experience, and really lets its strengths – exciting combat and smooth movement – stand out. If you’re looking for a solid open-world RPG that doesn’t take forever to finish, Atlas Fallen: Reign of Sand is a great choice. The main story takes about 11 hours to complete, but you can easily spend over 20 hours exploring everything the game has to offer. It’s a surprisingly good open-world game that deserves a second look.
1. Sunset Overdrive

Before becoming known for the highly praised Marvel’s Spider-Man games under PlayStation, Insomniac Games created the unique and popular Sunset Overdrive. This energetic, open-world shooter let players express themselves in combat while moving quickly and smoothly through the environment – skills that would later be seen in the Spider-Man series. Players zipped around on rails, defeating enemies in a visually striking world that still feels fresh and exciting today.
The best way to experience Sunset Overdrive is to treat it like a massive playground where you can cause as much joyful chaos as possible. The game has a lighthearted story packed with funny, self-aware jokes, memorable characters with a rebellious edge, and a vibrant punk rock style that stands out from more realistic games. It’s easy to see how the developers, Insomniac, later created the popular Spider-Man games – both even offer relatively short playtimes. You can finish the main story in about 10 hours, and complete everything in around 17. That makes it a perfect open-world game for a weekend, especially if you don’t have a lot of free time.
