10 Jujutsu Kaisen Scenes That Showed the True Cost of Being a Sorcerer

Along with series like Chainsaw Man and Hell’s Paradise, this anime is known for its particularly dark and intense moments. Becoming a jujutsu sorcerer isn’t glamorous; it’s a heavy responsibility that forces characters to make incredibly difficult choices when fighting curses and other sorcerers.

Being a jujutsu sorcerer is incredibly demanding, often leaving lasting emotional wounds. Some sorcerers even die, succumb to their desires, or find they can’t compromise their values. Throughout Jujutsu Kaisen, we repeatedly see how difficult and costly this path is, revealing the heavy price paid for both success and failure.

Satoru Gojo Took a Great Risk by Challenging Sukuna

Throughout most of Jujutsu Kaisen, Satoru Gojo seemed like an unstoppable power. He was presented from the start as incredibly strong, like when he easily defeated Sukuna using only one finger. Ultimately, he knew he’d have to fight Sukuna to save Yuji from being executed.

Even though Gojo didn’t seem afraid of his opponent, even after their intense fight, he knew he could lose. He challenged Sukuna specifically hoping to wear him down, even if it cost him his life. More importantly, Gojo believed in his students and counted on them to finish the job if he couldn’t. Despite his upbeat attitude, Gojo understood how dangerous and difficult jujutsu sorcery truly is.

Suguru Geto Went on a Downward Spiral After Riko Amanai’s Murder

Like Nobara, Megumi, and Yuji in Jujutsu Kaisen, the previous generation of sorcerers also formed a strong team. However, Geto Suguru spiraled downward after failing to save Riko Amanai from Toji Fushiguro, and Yuki Tsukumo’s unclear guidance only made things worse.

Geto ultimately became a drastically changed man, abandoning his principles and compassion in his pursuit of a world solely focused on jujutsu. What began as a debate about the role of sorcerers versus non-sorcerers nearly escalated into a devastating conflict, all stemming from Geto letting one tragic event completely reshape how he saw the world.

Mechamaru Died Immediately After Acquiring a Healthy Body

I learned the story of Kokichi Muta, who went by Mechamaru because he used puppets to represent himself. He was born with a really difficult physical condition, and despite having a natural talent for fighting, he spent almost his entire life in pain. It made a strange kind of sense that he ended up working with Mahito – Mahito was the only one who claimed he could actually ease Kokichi’s suffering.

Fans quickly figured out Muta had always intended to betray the villains as soon as he regained his strength. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to save him from a powerful opponent like Mahito. Muta’s fate is a stark reminder of how harsh the jujutsu world is, with many giving up everything for goals they might never reach. Thankfully, his foresight did buy the heroes some much-needed time.

Yuji Realizes That Sukuna Used His Body to Massacre Shibuya

Yuji Itadori possessed incredible mental strength, initially preventing the powerful curse, Sukuna, from fully taking over his body. This forced Sukuna to create unusual restrictions that benefited Yuji. However, after Yuji unknowingly consumed a large number of Sukuna’s fingers, Sukuna gained enough power to overwhelm him and take control. Appearing at roughly 75% of his full strength, Sukuna then caused widespread destruction in Shibuya.

Seeing Sukuna battle Jogo was already insane, but what happened after was on a whole other level. It turned out that while I was blacked out, my body had been rampaging through the city, and the sheer scale of the destruction and loss of life… it was horrifying. Like, imagine casually tossing a pebble at a puppy – that’s how easily my body was taking lives. The weight of realizing that almost crushed me, but somehow, I pushed through it. It was a truly dark time.

Nanami and Nobara’s Deaths Represented Worst Outcomes

Yuji Itadori always strived to protect people, making the tragic events of the story all the more impactful. The devastating Shibuya massacre already showcased the dark tone of JJK, but things became even more personal when Yuji was forced to witness the deaths of two close friends. The first was Nanami Kento, who shared a poignant moment with Yuji before being brutally killed by Mahito.

During his fight with Mahito, Yuji is devastated by constant reminders of Nanami’s death. The situation worsens when Nobara, a key member of their team, tragically dies as well. Yuji, already burdened by the countless lives lost, is forced to carry even more pain.

Toji Fushiguro Did Not Deserve the Zenin Clan’s Hatred

In anime, characters with incredible power aren’t always revered. It felt unfair that the Zenin family rejected Toji, considering their own strength, simply because he was naturally gifted and incredibly resilient. Despite his physical prowess, Toji lacked cursed energy, which meant he couldn’t learn the special techniques the family treasured most.

Megumi Fushiguro’s birth came about because his father, Toji, left the Zenin clan, which ultimately benefited the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. However, Toji was always treated as an outcast by his family. It’s likely that the Zenin’s prejudice and rejection of him led him down a path of villainy – as the saying goes, someone abandoned by their community might destroy it just to feel something. Despite this, the Zenin clan didn’t truly fall apart until the next generation.

Mai Could Only Strengthen Maki by Sacrificing Her Life

Honestly, Toji Fushiguro’s life was rough, but Maki Zenin had it even harder. Not only did she have almost no cursed energy, but the Zenin clan treated her terribly because she was a woman. There was something connecting Toji to them – something that stopped him from wiping them all out – and that same thing initially held Maki back too. But witnessing Mai’s death… that changed everything. It fundamentally altered her, and honestly, it turned her into a force as terrifying and unstoppable as Toji himself. She really became the Toji of her generation.

The Zenin clan’s extreme prejudice against women was a major factor in their downfall, and it unfairly harmed many people. Mai felt the only way to help her sister was through a tragic sacrifice, and she won’t be able to see the impact of her bravery. It’s possible, though, that she witnessed Maki destroy the clan, killing almost everyone within it.

Masamichi Yaga’s Execution Highlighted Jujutsu Dogmatism

Satoru Gojo was such a powerful figure that he kept the often-violent jujutsu authorities in check. They initially wanted to execute Yuta Okkotsu and Yuji Itadori, but backed down when Gojo agreed to mentor them. However, once Gojo was imprisoned, the authorities immediately sent Yuta to kill Yuji.

Despite its failure, the plan did achieve its primary goal: the elimination of Masamichi Yaga. Those in charge, driven by a childish fear of his powerful Cursed Corpse techniques and ignoring the good he could have done as principal, ordered his death. This highlights a fundamental problem: the system itself is broken, making the life of a sorcerer more dangerous than rewarding.

Yuta Okkotsu Was Haunted by Rika Orimoto for Too Long

Despite valuing tradition, most members of the jujutsu world don’t fully grasp how cursed energy functions. Even fewer understand the complex family histories and legacies within the institution, which have become blurred over time. It actually took Satoru Gojo’s direct intervention to discover Yuta Okkotsu’s background and explain the source of his immense power.

To make matters even more tragic, Yuta suffered for five years with the spirit of Rika Orimoto constantly tormenting him during his childhood – a weight no child should have to carry. This curse kept him isolated and put others in danger simply by her presence, ruining any happy memories he had of their friendship and replacing them with five years of intense emotional pain.

Yuji Accepts the Dark Burdens of Jujutsu Without Hesitation

I’ve noticed Yuji Itadori is a bit of an unexpected hero. He was supposed to be a container for Sukuna, but he actively fought against that fate, choosing to do what he believed was right instead. What really strikes me is how readily he takes on the challenges life throws at him, and the sense of responsibility he shows is remarkable, honestly more than a lot of grown-ups would handle.

Yuji Itadori always keeps moving forward, even though he’s often forced to fight as a vessel for Sukuna. A particularly difficult moment in Jujutsu Kaisen involved Hiromi Higuruma falsely accusing Yuji of a large-scale massacre. Despite knowing Sukuna was solely responsible, Yuji took the blame, showcasing the immense guilt he feels. He believed someone needed to be held accountable for those terrible acts, and he chose to be that person.
