Reflecting on Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) history, each new release introduces a host of fresh characters, some of whom have proven to be spot-on castings. Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige recently hinted at significant changes coming after 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, marking the end of the Multiverse Saga and a potential “reset” for the universe. Given these upcoming shifts, now seems an ideal moment to revisit the most impressive casting choices in MCU history.
Across characters like Iron Man and Ms. Marvel, the franchise boasts several exceptional performances that are hard to imagine being delivered any better by different actors. These ten roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe particularly shine as examples of near-perfect casting choices for their respective characters.
1) Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has largely attributed its success to Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man, who embodies Stark’s charm, arrogance, intellect, and kindness throughout his ten appearances in the MCU. With an undeniable screen presence, Downey Jr. excels as the comedic billionaire superhero in the early days of the MCU, delivering consistently impressive performances. He also holds his own during Iron Man’s more emotionally intense moments in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” There is no question that Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Iron Man stands out as the most iconic character within the MCU.
2) Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
Samuel L. Jackson’s impressive acting background landed him the role of Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which perfectly fits him. As a highly strategic former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the founder of the Avengers, Fury is central to many critical incidents in the MCU – from the missions of each Avenger to the Skrull invasion of Earth. Jackson masterfully conveys both the weighty seriousness required by Fury’s responsibilities and injects humor into lighter scenes. In every one of his 13 MCU projects, Jackson leaves an indelible impression as a versatile actor of such caliber that he solidifies Fury as an exceptional character.
3) Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow
Despite the fact that Scarlett Johansson’s character Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow was often given less depth in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Johansson perfectly embodied this role. Known as a seductive superhero, the Red Room-trained assassin turned S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and Avenger calls for a seasoned action star, and Johansson delivers in spades with her captivating screen presence and intensity on set. Johansson manages to make Natasha relatable despite the character’s limited development, showing vulnerability whenever possible amidst the action and humor-filled scenes. It’s unfortunate that Johansson didn’t have more opportunities to explore Black Widow’s character over her 11 years in the MCU, but she has become an iconic figure in the entertainment industry with this role.
4) Chris Evans as Captain America
Chris Evans delivers authenticity and a strong aura in his portrayal of Steve Rogers/Captain America across the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From a green recruit in the U.S. Army to a seasoned Super Soldier and commander of the Avengers, Steve’s character unfolds in an exciting narrative, and Evans consistently rises to the occasion. The actor masterfully conveys Steve’s sense of duty and deep empathy, while also showcasing his transformation from World War II to modern times. Evans truly excels during Steve’s pivotal scenes in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, as the Avengers battle Thanos (Josh Brolin). Despite being several years since Evans last wielded the legendary Captain America Shield, it remains evident that he was an ideal fit for the role.
5) Chris Hemsworth as Thor
In a somewhat different phraseology: The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) hasn’t consistently nailed Thor’s style and personality, which is unfortunate considering Chris Hemsworth’s exceptional suitability for the role. Initially portraying Thor as a strong and bold deity in Thor, he later transforms into a struggling character, occasionally overly comical, who experiences one setback after another in his quest to find his place in existence. Despite a significant change in tone from Thor: The Dark World to Thor: Ragnarok, Hemsworth remains captivating as Thor on screen. He not only embodies the physical aspect of the muscular Norse god, but also excels at delivering both comedic and dramatic elements throughout his film appearances. If the MCU ever decides to recast Thor, it will face a significant challenge in finding a suitable replacement.
6) Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther
In just four Marvel Cinematic Universe films, Chadwick Boseman’s portrayal of T’Challa/Black Panther created a lasting impact that will forever be remembered. Boseman brilliantly balanced T’Challa’s fierce warrior persona with his tender human side, exuding the regal presence befitting Wakanda’s protector. His on-screen relationships with fellow actors, such as Letitia Wright as Shuri and Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, felt genuine and allowed their bonds to grow convincingly. Additionally, Boseman’s ability to deliver impactful cinematic moments made both climactic emotional scenes and major action sequences memorable. There will never be another actor like Chadwick Boseman or a Black Panther as extraordinary as the late performer’s T’Challa.
7) Tom Holland as Spider-Man
In the footsteps of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland takes the lead as an exceptional Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Holland surpasses his predecessors by masterfully portraying both the intelligent and charming Peter and the agile and dynamic Spider-Man. With his impressive performances, Holland is ready to carry his own movie, making him the second MCU actor to headline four solo films. Sharing the screen with other notable MCU heroes, Holland injects humor and liveliness into every scene. Additionally, he skillfully handles Peter’s complex journey of embracing his superhero responsibilities amidst personal tragedies and challenges. As a result, Holland’s Spider-Man emerges as a captivatingly layered interpretation of the classic comic book character. While finding the perfect MCU Spider-Man wasn’t going to be simple, the franchise remarkably found the right fit.
8) Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness
People didn’t expect Kathryn Hahn’s portrayal of Agatha Harkness in WandaVision to be so extraordinary, but she was exceptional in her supporting role and Marvel even gave her a solo series as a result. As the mesmerizing and humorous villain in WandaVision, Hahn gets to delve into Agatha’s complex emotional depth and vulnerability in Agatha All Along. Scenes with Aubrey Plaza’s Rio Vidal/Death revealing their characters’ past relationship, as well as an entire episode showcasing Agatha’s brief time with her son before his untimely death, highlight Hahn’s remarkable ability to bring Agatha to life as one of the most intriguing Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) characters in recent years. Few other actors can blend offbeat humor with such a profound character analysis, which underscores Hahn’s exceptional acting skills.
9) Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova
Marvel made an excellent choice by casting Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, the younger adopted sister of Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), portrayed by Johansson. Pugh brings a unique charm to her three appearances, showcasing her immense talent. The MCU provides Yelena with ample opportunities for character development, unlike her hero counterpart.
In Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Thunderbolts (upcoming), Pugh’s skills are put to good use, allowing her to excel in both comedic and emotional scenes. Her portrayal of Yelena is compelling due to the depth she gives to a character who lived her childhood as an assassin under mind control, had five years missing during the Blip, and lost her sister.
Yelena’s storyline is one of the best in the MCU, and it wouldn’t be nearly as captivating without Pugh playing the role.
10) Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel
In her debut acting performance, Iman Vellani shines as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel. She’s heartwarming, funny, and full of energy in the series Ms. Marvel, where she makes her entrance as the main character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Everything about Vellani’s portrayal feels genuine, which is a refreshing change in the franchise. The relationship between Kamala and her family and friends is engaging as she uncovers her powers and delves into her past. Vellani breathes life into Ms. Marvel, and her upcoming role in The Marvels promises to be equally impressive. One of the movie’s best moments is Kamala’s hilarious fangirling over Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, and Vellani’s chemistry with her co-stars is excellent. With two stellar performances already under her belt, Vellani’s future in the MCU looks promising.
