10 Marvel Street-Level Heroes Who Have Become Cosmic Characters

It’s unusual for powerful, cosmic-level heroes to fight at a street level because the battles would be so one-sided. However, it’s common for street-level heroes to get involved in huge, cosmic events – often because they team up with more powerful allies. These heroes are known for their realistic, down-to-earth stories, but they’ve actually saved the universe on more than one occasion.

Heroes such as Luke Cage, She-Hulk, and Spider-Man are incredibly powerful on Earth, but their abilities aren’t as effective in the vastness of space compared to characters like Thor and Captain Marvel. However, these heroes have occasionally ventured into cosmic conflicts to protect Earth, and sometimes even gained new powers while doing so.

While Moon Knight, also known as Marc Spector, often operates as a street-level hero, he’s deeply connected to the mystical world. As the avatar of the Egyptian god Khonshu, he doesn’t have typical superpowers, but he can be brought back to life, essentially making him immortal. It’s always compelling when the series moves away from realistic stories and explores his divine connection, like it did in the ‘Age of Khonshu’ storyline.

In this storyline, Khonshu decides to thwart Mephisto’s plans, and empowers Moon Knight with the abilities of several Avengers, including Ghost Rider, Doctor Strange, Iron Fist, and Thor. This leads to Marc Spector wielding Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir, and even briefly becoming host to the Phoenix Force to accomplish his mission. Afterward, Black Panther offers Marc a place on the Avengers, but he declines, choosing to return to his life as a street-level vigilante, as if he hadn’t temporarily become incredibly powerful.

Iron Fist is a fantastic Marvel hero who balances fighting crime on the streets with powerful mystical abilities. Like his partner Luke Cage, Danny Rand usually focuses on local issues, enhanced by his mastery of Chi. While he prefers to keep things realistic, the mystical world often finds its way into his adventures.

Currently known as Ghost Fist, Danny has been granted powers by the god Osiris, allowing him to tap into energies he previously couldn’t comprehend. He recently competed in the Tournament of Heavenly Cities, a legendary competition held every 88 years where the most powerful warriors from each city battle for supremacy. Danny is unique in his ability to seamlessly switch between fighting street-level crime and participating in these massive, cosmic events.

For years, Hawkeye has been involved in huge MCU events with gods, monsters, and aliens, making people forget he’s fundamentally a hero who operates on a more grounded, street-level. Clint Barton doesn’t have superpowers – his incredible archery skills are his only real advantage. And if you look at the comics, his experiences have often been far beyond what you’d expect from a typical vigilante.

Beyond enduring death and resurrection following Scarlet Witch’s emotional crisis – a huge ordeal for anyone, let alone someone without powers – he even battled the incredibly powerful Phoenix Force and only suffered minor burns. One of his most notable adventures took place in the 1990s during “Operation Galactic Storm,” where he found himself caught in the middle of a war between the Kree and Shi’ar empires. Despite never gaining any cosmic abilities himself, it’s remarkable that he was able to fight aliens using only a bow and his specialized trick arrows.

Christopher Powell began using his Darkhawk armor to fight crime, initially focusing on criminals in Queens, New York. He saw it as a way to make amends for his father’s past as a dishonest police officer. Over time, however, his activities as a vigilante have grown far beyond what anyone imagined when the character first appeared in comics.

Darkhawk teamed up with Talon to battle Annihilus in the War of Kings storyline. Later, during Infinity Countdown, he persuaded the bounty hunter Death’s Head to take him to Arcturus IV in search of the Fraternity of Raptors. He then joined forces with Mister Fantastic and other heroes to fight in the Cancerverse, and has had numerous adventures beyond Earth. Darkhawk is a hero who quickly embraced cosmic adventures and continues to explore the universe.

She-Hulk is known for being a lawyer who sometimes fights crime, and while fans often want to see her in big, cosmic stories, she usually focuses on more down-to-earth cases. Still, she has done legal work off-world! She was part of the Fantastic Four back in the 1990s, and more recently, she stepped up to protect the planet Sakaar when Hulk went to investigate a murder in the Imperial #1 comic series.

Interestingly, She-Hulk became a lawyer dealing with cosmic-level cases! While Dan Slott was writing the comic, she was chosen by the Living Tribunal to join the Magistrati – a sort of jury for intergalactic legal matters. As a member, she successfully fought to liberate the planet Skardon from the tyrannical rule of the Champion, using both her fighting skills and legal expertise.

Maya Lopez, known as Echo, started as a supporting character in Daredevil comics – initially as both a love interest and an adversary. For a long time, her stories stayed focused on street-level crime. However, everything changed in 2021 when she competed in the Enter the Phoenix tournament.

While Maya’s time as the Phoenix wasn’t as extensive as Jean Grey’s, she still played a significant role, fighting alongside the Avengers in numerous battles. She eventually sacrificed this connection to save the entire multiverse during the ‘Heroes Reborn’ event. It was a huge transformation for her, going from a supporting character to the host of such a powerful entity, and fans really enjoyed seeing her take on a more prominent role.

For decades, Eddie Brock was a character focused on gritty, down-to-earth stories, whether he was playing a villain, a flawed hero, or something in between. But the King in Black storyline dramatically changed that. This event expanded the history of the Symbiotes by revealing Knull as their original creator and leader, and it launched Eddie Brock into much larger, more cosmic adventures.

Following his victory over Knull, Eddie Brock unexpectedly became the new King in Black. He gave up being Venom—though his son, Dylan, took on the symbiote—to concentrate on building his own powerful reputation. He essentially became a god, ruling over an entire alien civilization. But things got even more complicated when he was forced to battle a future version of himself. Ultimately, after suffering a fatal injury, he was left with no choice but to merge with Carnage.

Frank Castle, better known as The Punisher, is often the most realistic character in Marvel comics, but even he gets caught up in strange storylines. A good example is when he was brought back to life and transformed into a version of Frankenstein’s monster, becoming ‘Franken-Castle.’ However, that’s not the most outlandish thing that’s happened to him.

Okay, so Donny Cates’ Thanos run completely blew my mind! They introduced this unbelievably powerful version of The Punisher – seriously, he’s Thanos’ right-hand man! The craziest part? He made a deal with Mephisto and somehow ended up with Galactus’ Power Cosmic! Now he’s the Cosmic Ghost Rider, zooming around the universe on a motorcycle and basically unleashing hellfire on anyone who deserves it. It’s seriously the most intense, over-the-top version of the character I’ve ever seen.

Matt Murdock leads a double life as both a lawyer and a vigilante, and he’s driven by a strong sense of justice. He especially focuses on helping those who are overlooked and powerless, and he’s deeply committed to protecting his neighborhood, Hell’s Kitchen. Because of this, he doesn’t often get involved in large-scale, universe-threatening events, though he did play a key part in the 2019 storyline, War of the Realms.

During the event, Heimdall temporarily gave Daredevil his sword, Hofund. This sword granted Matt Murdock Asgardian powers, transforming him into the ‘God Without Fear’ – an all-seeing protector of Earth. It also greatly enhanced his strength and gave him perfect intuition – an incredibly accurate ‘gut feeling’. Once Matt returned the sword to Heimdall, he lost these abilities. This experience made him more powerful than he’d ever been before.

Peter Parker hasn’t been simply a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man for quite some time, especially with the recent additions to his backstory like Spider-Totems and the Web of Life and Destiny. However, even before these changes transformed him from a relatable hero into someone with a predetermined destiny, he was already involved in grand, cosmic storylines. A notable example of this happened back in the 1980s, written by David Michelinie.

In a memorable storyline from Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man temporarily gained the incredible powers of Captain Universe and the Enigma Force. This boost allowed him to defeat a powerful robot called the Tri-Sentinel, built by Loki, and its robotic army. For the duration of the battle, Spider-Man’s strength and speed were greatly increased, and he could even shoot energy blasts and transform his skin into the nearly indestructible metal, Adamantium. While this power-up only lasted for that one fight and hasn’t happened since, it’s become a beloved moment for fans, and Spider-Man’s enhanced form remains popular.
