Anime became much more popular worldwide during the 2010s thanks to streaming services. However, action-packed shows still made up the bulk of what was available, and it could be hard to find anime that wasn’t focused on fighting. While action anime is often exciting, sometimes viewers want something different – a moving drama or a captivating mystery, for example – to offer a change of pace.
Whether you’re a longtime anime fan or just getting started, it’s nice to begin with shows that aren’t constantly filled with characters yelling attack names. Recently, Comic Book published a list of ten great, calmer anime for both experienced viewers and newcomers. But with so many fantastic anime series and movies out there, ten isn’t nearly enough! So, here’s another list of ten equally wonderful anime that you’re sure to enjoy.
10) Erased

This thrilling series follows a man who travels back in time 18 years to prevent his mother’s death. Unlike his usual time jumps after a tragedy, this leap leaves him completely shaken. As he investigates, he discovers that saving his mother means uncovering and stopping the true killer behind everything. The series…
9) Big Fish & Begonia

Whether or not you’re impressed by the film’s stunning animation, the story itself is captivating. It centers around Chun, a young girl who lives in a magical world hidden beneath ours. As part of a coming-of-age journey, she transforms into a red dolphin and enters the human world, only to get tangled in a fishing net. When a boy sacrifices himself to save her, Chun is determined to bring his soul back, no matter the cost.
8) A Silent Voice

I recently watched A Silent Voice, and it really stuck with me. It deals with some tough issues, but at its heart, it’s a story about making amends and learning to forgive. The film centers on Shoya, a high school student who deeply regrets bullying a deaf classmate, Shoko, when they were both younger – his actions led to her having to leave their elementary school. Now, he’s determined to right his wrongs and apologize. Watching them both navigate their complicated past and try to heal was incredibly moving, and the film beautifully captures those raw, vulnerable moments.
7) Kids on the Slope

Despite being overlooked by many, this MAPPA series is truly one of the studio’s best. It beautifully combines romance, music, and the challenges of growing up, resonating with anyone who watches it. The story follows Kaoru Nishimi, a boy who frequently moves schools because of his father’s work, making it hard for him to form lasting friendships. That changes when he meets Sentaro Kawabuchi, a rebellious drummer, and Ritsuko Mukae, and rediscovers his love for music.
6) Given

This anime, focused on a boy’s love story, is deeply moving and surprisingly sweet. It centers on the main character’s healing process after a painful loss. Mafuyu Sato carries a guitar everywhere, even though he doesn’t know how to play, and is captivated by the music Ritsuka Uenoyama creates. As Mafuyu develops feelings for Ritsuka and explores his own musical interests, details about his difficult past begin to emerge.
5)Carole & Tuesday

Despite being released almost seven years ago, this beautifully animated anime remains one of Shinichirō Watanabe’s lesser-known gems. It’s set 50 years in the future, after humans have colonized Mars, and artificial intelligence controls everything – even music. The story follows two girls from very different walks of life who team up to write songs, hoping to become stars in the AI-driven music world.
4) Fruits Basket (2019)

This touching anime beautifully portrays themes of love, grief, overcoming hardship, and recovery, often featuring deeply emotional scenes that connect with audiences. The story centers on Tohru Honda, who begins living with Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure Sohma after finding herself without a place to stay. She quickly discovers the Sohma family’s hidden curse and meets other family members who share it.
3) Your Lie in April

This moving anime tells the story of a young pianist struggling with loss and unable to play after a traumatic experience. His life changes when he meets Kaori, a vibrant violinist who encourages him to rediscover his love for music. As they grow closer, he begins to heal, all while Kaori secretly battles her own difficult past.
2) In This Corner of the World

This critically acclaimed film is deeply moving, portraying the devastating effects of war, particularly after the bombing of Hiroshima. It’s a powerful story about surviving, staying strong, and finding love and hope even in the face of unimaginable hardship. The film follows Suzu Urano, a sweet and artistic young woman who grew up near Hiroshima. As she enters adulthood and marries, she strives to fit into her new family, not knowing that the approaching war will drastically change her life.
1) Run with the Wind

Based on Shion Miura’s novel, this under-the-radar series tells the story of a group of young people dedicated to running in just 23 episodes. It stands out for its realistic portrayal of motivation and effort, avoiding exaggerated visuals or animation, which makes it very relatable. The story centers on Kakeru Kurahara, a former star runner now studying sociology in college. When he meets Haiji Kiyose, a fellow student, his love for running is rekindled, and he begins a fresh start.
