10 Most Famous Guest Stars on Tales from the Darkside

When Creepshow became popular in 1982, it sparked a wave of anthology horror shows. While Tales from the Crypt in the late ’80s and early ’90s became the most well-known and loved of these, Tales from the Darkside, which aired from 1984 to 1988, was actually Creepshow’s direct follow-up. Though it didn’t have the same large budget as Crypt, it shared a similar darkly comedic tone and also featured many actors who were just starting their careers.

It’s simple why Darkside felt like a true follow-up to Creepshow: it was made by the same director, George A. Romero. But when it comes to famous actors, the answer is a little more complex, and we’ll break it down for you now.

10) Bruce Davison – “The Word Processor of the Gods” (S1 E8)

Bruce Davison first gained widespread recognition in 1971 when he starred in the film Willard, a role later played by Crispin Glover. He’s also worked with acclaimed directors like Robert Altman, Ken Russell, and John Landis. However, many viewers remember him as Senator Robert Kelly, the character who faced Mystique in Bryan Singer’s X-Men and X2: X-Men United.

Darkside sometimes retold stories by famous authors like Stephen King and Clive Barker. One notable example is an episode called “The Word Processor of the Gods,” which is based on a King story and considered to be a strong adaptation. The episode features a writer who discovers his late nephew’s computer has the power to make anything he types come true.

9) Danny Aiello – “The Odds” (S1 E4)

Danny Aiello, who recently passed away, was best known for portraying Italian-American characters, particularly New Yorkers. He appeared in many iconic films, including The Godfather Part II, Once Upon a Time in America, Moonstruck, Do the Right Thing, Léon: The Professional, Lucky Number Slevin, and The Purple Rose of Cairo. Aiello was a versatile actor, equally skilled at playing kind, gentle characters and tough, imposing ones.

In “The Odds,” the actor plays Tommy Vale, a bookie who takes any wager, no matter how strange. He believes a new client, Bill Lacey (played by the late Tom Noonan), is making foolish bets and sees him as an easy source of money. However, he’s shocked to discover Lacey always wins. Desperate to defeat him, Vale makes a bet on his own lifespan, then goes into hiding, trying to avoid any possible danger.

8) Jessica Harper – “The Tear Collector” (S1 E16)

Jessica Harper is best known for her iconic role as Suzy Bannion in the horror film Suspiria. However, she’s had a long and impressive career, appearing in many other memorable movies from the 1970s through the 2000s, such as Phantom of the Paradise, Woody Allen’s Love and Death and Stardust Memories, Pennies from Heaven, Boys, and Minority Report. After a quieter decade in the 2010s, Harper has experienced a significant career comeback in the 2020s, with roles in films like Bones and All alongside Timothée Chalamet, Memory with Jessica Chastain, Nightbitch featuring Amy Adams, and upcoming projects Carousel with Chris Pine and Kill Me with Charlie Day, slated for release in 2026.

In the movie “The Tear Collector,” Harper stars as Prudence, a woman struggling with depression that causes her to cry frequently. She’s taken aback when she discovers her therapist, Ambrose Cavender, has a peculiar hobby: collecting tears. As she starts to fall for him, she becomes determined to understand why he does it.

7) Brent Spiner & Christian Slater – “A Case of the Stubborns” (S1 E9)

Certain episodes of Darkside feature impressive guest stars, and “A Case of the Stubborns” is a great example. It showcases a young Christian Slater, who later appeared in Tales from the Darkside: The Movie, alongside Brent Spiner, best known as Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

“A Case of the Stubborns” perfectly demonstrates how Darkside could create compelling stories even with limited resources. The episode centers around a man who appears to have died, but refuses to accept it, much to the surprise of his daughter and grandson. Brent Slater plays the grandson, and Jonathan Frakes appears as a priest attempting to convince the man he’s actually passed away. Many fans consider this to be one of the very best episodes of the series – easily a Top 10 pick.

6) Kareem Abdul-Jabbar – “Djinn, No Chaser” (S1 E10)

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is famous for his impressive career as a center in basketball, playing for teams like the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers. However, many people may not know he also acted, and he’s particularly remembered for his comedic role in the movie Airplane!

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played a genie in the Darkside episode, “Djinn, No Chaser.” Genies are a common element in horror anthologies, appearing in shows like Creepshow and The Twilight Zone. While the episode itself isn’t particularly strong, Abdul-Jabbar’s performance is a highlight.

5) Bradley Whitford – “The Deal” (S4 E12)

Bradley Whitford, known for his memorable roles as Josh Lyman in The West Wing and in films like The Cabin in the Woods and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, actually started his career with a role on Darkside. Luckily, the part played to his strength as a likable, everyday guy.

I’m really rooting for Tom Dash! He’s a teacher from England who’s taken a huge leap of faith and moved to Hollywood to become a screenwriter. It’s tough going, though – he’s having a hard time getting anyone to even look at his script. Thankfully, his neighbor seems to know people, but I get the feeling helping Dash might come at a really steep price… maybe even his integrity.

4) Seth Green – “Monsters in My Room” (S2 E12)

Seth Green started acting when he was only 10 years old, appearing in commercials and TV movies like an ABC Afterschool Special, as well as films like It and Pump Up the Volume. He later gained recognition for his role in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie and, more notably, as Daniel “Oz” Osbourne in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series.

One of his first roles was in a Darkside episode called “Monsters in My Room,” written and directed by the acclaimed John Sayles. He played Ronan, a boy whose cruel stepfather doesn’t believe him when he says monsters are invading his bedroom. Eventually, Ronan overcomes his fear and befriends the monsters, using them to get back at the person who’s really causing him trouble.

3) Tippi Hedren & Justine Bateman – “Mookie and Pookie” (S1 E5)

Justine Bateman, known for playing Mallory Keaton on the popular 1980s TV show Family Ties, is the sister of actor Jason Bateman. She’s also made appearances in her brother’s show, Arrested Development, and recently appeared on Modern Family. Meanwhile, Tippi Hedren gained fame starring in Alfred Hitchcock classics like The Birds and Marnie. She also comes from a famous Hollywood family – her daughter is Melanie Griffith, and her granddaughter is Dakota Johnson.

In the film “Mookie and Pookie,” Bateman plays Pookie, whose twin brother, Mookie, is dying. Mookie uploads his mind to a computer before he dies, and Pookie continues to talk to him through the computer. However, their parents believe Pookie is having a mental health crisis and are threatening to destroy the computer, so Pookie must prove to them that she’s actually communicating with her brother.

2) Debbie Harry – “The Moth” (S4 E4)

Debbie Harry, best known as the lead singer of the band Blondie – famous for hits like “Heart of Glass” and “Call Me” – also appeared in several films, including David Cronenberg’s Videodrome. She even had a connection to Tales from the Darkside, appearing in both a television episode of the series and the Tales from the Darkside: The Movie, just like Christian Slater.

In the film, she portrayed the witch who was about to eat Timmy, played by Matthew Lawrence, in the connecting scenes. In her episode of the TV show “The Moth,” she played a different witch – one who had been stabbed and thought her spirit would leave as a moth. She instructed her mother to catch the moth and return it to her mouth to bring her back to life, but it’s unclear if her mother even wants to revive her.

1) Robert Forster – “The Milkman Cometh” (S3 E13)

Robert Forster enjoyed a remarkable 50-year career in Hollywood, consistently making every film and show better. While he’s celebrated for his Oscar-nominated role as the charming bail bondsman Max Cherry in Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, he also delivered memorable performances in popular titles like Alligator, the Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen films, Breaking Bad, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, and Better Call Saul.

In E.M. Forster’s “The Milkman Cometh,” the story follows an artist trying to provide for his wife and child, yet he secretly desires another son. The family lives in an otherwise ordinary neighborhood, except for their milkman, who possesses the power to grant wishes – if you leave him a written request. However, like many magical beings, the milkman tends to twist wishes in unexpected and often ironic ways.
