With over 1000 Pokémon now existing, the original 151 from the very first generation remain incredibly popular. These beloved creatures have become central to the franchise, which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary in February. Even with a 10th generation on the horizon, the impact of those early Pokémon is still strong.
It’s tough to pick just ten, but the original Pokémon Red and Blue games were incredibly special. They featured iconic Pokémon like the Legendary Bird trio and what many fans consider the best starter Pokémon ever. Plus, you had memorable characters like Team Rocket’s Meowth and the incredibly powerful Mewtwo, who remains a fan favorite. Even though some Pokémon didn’t make the list, the first generation definitely gave us a truly unforgettable group.
10. Mewtwo
Mewtwo was a special Pokémon from the very beginning. In the first generation of games, finding Mewtwo required completing the entire game, and even then, players often needed help from friends to locate it. Its starring role in the first Pokémon movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back, truly established it as a fan favorite. Since then, Mewtwo has consistently appeared in the main series games and remains a popular character on official merchandise.
9. Psyduck
Psyduck, the somewhat clumsy yellow duck Pokémon prone to headaches, hasn’t always been a central character in the games, though it’s shown up in many of them. However, it frequently provided comic relief in the animated series, and recently took center stage in the Netflix show Pokémon Concierge. Despite its minor role in the main games, there’s a surprisingly large amount of Psyduck merchandise available – perhaps because this original Water-type Pokémon is so beloved by fans.
8. Snorlax
In the original Pokémon games, players needed a special item called the Poké Flute to wake up the giant Snorlax blocking key paths across the Kanto region. This made it a memorable challenge, as it wasn’t something you could simply stumble upon. Over time, this endearing and sleepy Pokémon has received plenty of comfy additions like beanbags and pillows. It’s also gained new appearances in games such as Pokopia and Sword and Shield, and has even become the star of Pokémon Sleep.
7. Gyarados
Magikarp, a seemingly weak Pokémon, evolves into Gyarados, one of the most recognizable Water-types from the original Pokémon games. Gyarados is known for its impressive design and continues to be a powerful Pokémon even today, which is why many trainers still include it on their teams after 30 years. Its popularity extends beyond the games, appearing in various forms of merchandise, the anime series, and the trading card game, solidifying its status as a beloved Pokémon from the Kanto region.
6. Gengar
Gengar, the Ghost-type Pokémon, has consistently been a fan favorite. From memorable appearances in the original Indigo League anime to its impressive Mega Evolution in the Generation 6 games and a striking Gigantamax form in Sword and Shield, Gengar has remained popular. Even though it was tricky to obtain in the early Red and Blue games – requiring a trade with a friend and a Link Cable – Gengar has become one of the most iconic Pokémon ever created.
5. Jigglypuff
Jigglypuff is known for its dramatic personality in the Pokémon anime, which often led to funny scenes where its singing put everyone to sleep. While not always a top pick in the video games, Jigglypuff has gained a huge fanbase over the years. This popularity was even highlighted when Jigglypuff appeared alongside Lady Gaga in a Super Bowl commercial. For three decades, fans have loved Jigglypuff’s adorable appearance and its diva attitude, and it doesn’t look like this Pokémon will be forgotten anytime soon.
4. Eevee
Eevee is a consistently popular Pokémon, likely because of its many different evolutions. Whether you prefer Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, or one of the newer Eeveelutions, you’ll need an Eevee to start. It’s become incredibly popular – second only to Pikachu in terms of merchandise – and even starred as a starter Pokémon in the 2018 game, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!
3. Squirtle, Bulbasaur, & Charmander
It might be a little unfair to include three Pokémon on this list when we’re only supposed to pick one, but the original Gen 1 starters – Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle – are so closely linked that it’s tough to separate them. The question of which starter is best has been debated by fans for years, and now many are passing that tradition on to their kids, letting them choose between the three. Even with all the new starters introduced over time, this original trio remains the most popular.
2. Charizard
For three decades, Charizard has been a fan favorite, appearing in everything from the first Pokémon Red game artwork to incredibly valuable trading cards. Its card was the most sought-after in the original series, and Charizard played a big role in both the Pokémon anime and manga. Many players even chose Charmander as their starting Pokémon, knowing it would evolve into the powerful Charizard.
Since its debut, Charizard has received several new forms, like Mega Evolutions and Gigantamax, and has appeared on more trading cards than almost any other Pokémon. Beyond that, tons of Charizard merchandise exists, including stuffed animals, figurines, and even shoes! Only one other Pokémon from the original generation seems to be more popular.
1. Pikachu
Pikachu, the Electric-Mouse Pokémon known for its rosy cheeks and slightly chubby build (especially in the first games), quickly became the most recognizable symbol of the Pokémon franchise. Originally, Poliwhirl and Clefairy were planned as the mascots, but Pikachu became far more popular. Pikachu was a constant companion to Ash in the animated series, and even starred as the starting Pokémon in Pokémon Yellow, a game largely dedicated to celebrating its popularity.
Even if you’re not familiar with Pokémon, you’ve almost certainly heard of Pikachu. He’s appeared on tons of products and logos, and continues to be a central figure in the Pokémon franchise beyond just the video games. While you might prefer another Pokémon from the original games, Pikachu is undeniably the most recognizable one ever.
