The *Dragon Ball* series is famous for its incredible heroes, and it popularized the concept of growing stronger through determination and hard work. But what really makes each story arc so captivating isn’t just the heroes – it’s the increasingly powerful and dangerous villains they have to overcome.
The Dragon Ball universe is full of incredibly powerful enemies – from those who threaten entire planets to strange aliens and dangerous robots. Some of these villains are even stronger than Goku and Vegeta, no matter how much they improve. What really makes them stand out is that they constantly challenge our heroes, forcing them to become even stronger. Throughout the entire Dragon Ball story, each new villain has raised the stakes higher than the last. Here’s a list of the ten most powerful villains the franchise has ever seen.
10) King Piccolo
The first few seasons of the original *Dragon Ball* were generally fun and upbeat. We saw Goku make his best friends and begin his quest to gather the Dragon Balls, which introduced viewers to his exciting world. But things became much more serious when King Piccolo Daimao appeared. He killed Krillin and even defeated Goku, forcing Goku to use the Dragon Balls to bring his friend back to life.
Though King was incredibly powerful in his time and forced a young Goku to push his limits, he wouldn’t stand a chance against today’s strongest Dragon Ball characters. King’s overwhelming strength nearly allowed Piccolo to conquer the Earth, but Goku managed to defeat him. Before being destroyed, Piccolo secretly created an egg containing his child as a last act.
9) Vegeta
Prince Vegeta, often just called Vegeta, is a major character in the *Dragon Ball* series. He first appeared as a villain during the *Saiyan Saga* and was incredibly powerful – his initial power level of 18,000 was more than double Goku’s at 8,000. He was the first opponent to force Goku to really push his Kaio-Ken technique to its absolute limit.
Vegeta is famous for his epic fight against Goku, one of the most memorable battles in *Dragon Ball*. He demonstrated incredible power with moves like turning into a Great Ape and using the Galick Gun. While he initially lost and later became a hero, that transformation wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Krillin, Gohan, and Yajirobe. In fact, Yajirobe cutting off Vegeta’s tail was the only thing that saved Earth from total destruction.
8) Frieza
Before his famous fight with Goku in *Dragon Ball Z*, Frieza committed a horrific act: he destroyed the Saiyan homeworld, Planet Vegeta, nearly wiping out the entire Saiyan race. This wasn’t about revenge or any sense of justice; Frieza simply used the Saiyans as a workforce and then callously destroyed their planet when he no longer needed them.
I witnessed firsthand the horrors Frieza inflicted on Planet Namek. He callously murdered countless innocent Namekians, all in a ruthless pursuit of the Dragon Balls and eternal life. It wasn’t until Goku achieved the incredible transformation into a Super Saiyan that he was finally defeated, solidifying Frieza’s reputation as one of the most terrifying villains in the entire series.
Frieza is a truly significant character in the *Dragon Ball* series. In fact, creator Akira Toriyama stated in a 2015 interview that Frieza is the most formidable and satisfying villain to defeat. This highlights that Frieza wasn’t simply another antagonist – he was intentionally crafted to be an unforgettable, ultimate villain.
7) Cell
While the Androids were a threat, Cell was far more dangerous. Dr. Gero built him using the genetic material of the universe’s strongest warriors – including Vegeta, Piccolo, and even the terrifying Frieza. But after absorbing Androids 17 and 18, Cell reached his ‘Perfect Form’ and became powerful enough to destroy the entire solar system.
Cell’s greatest strength came from his unique genetic makeup, which allowed him to copy the abilities of other fighters, like Goku’s Kamehameha and Piccolo’s ability to regenerate. This made him incredibly difficult to beat. Believing himself to be the perfect being, Cell created the ‘Cell Games,’ a dangerous tournament challenging fighters to defeat him before he caused widespread destruction.
The central conflict of the Cell Saga revolved around his battle with Gohan. Initially, Cell was stronger, but Gohan achieved a new level of power – Super Saiyan 2 – after witnessing the death of Android 16, allowing him to defeat Cell. Though Cell failed to destroy the Earth, he was instrumental in a truly memorable moment in *Dragon Ball*: Gohan’s growth and the incredible first appearance of Super Saiyan 2.
6. Majin Buu (Dragon Ball Z)
Majin Buu is a unique villain because he can transform into several different versions of himself. These include the innocent and playful Buu, the powerful and cruel Super Buu, the wild and chaotic Kid Buu, the gentle Good Buu, and the evil Evil Buu. Each form has its own distinct personality and strength, making him a consistently surprising and compelling character in the series.
However, the most dangerous form is Super Buu, created when the evil side of Buu absorbed the good side and used that power. This version was incredibly cruel and even destroyed the Earth, with only a handful of people – including Mr. Satan – managing to survive.
Because very few villains have actually managed to destroy Earth, Buu’s incredible power is truly remarkable. He could absorb other fighters, taking their strength and abilities, which made him seem virtually unstoppable. Ultimately, it took a massive Spirit Bomb – fueled by the energy of almost everyone on Earth – to finally defeat him.
5. Baby (Dragon Ball GT)
Baby was one of the scariest villains in *Dragon Ball GT*. He was a unique being-a Neo Machine Mutant and a parasitic life form created from the DNA of the Tuffle King. Driven by a deep hatred and a desire for revenge, Baby wanted to destroy all Saiyans as payback for the destruction of his people, the Tuffles.
Baby is a unique villain because he doesn’t just rely on brute strength. Instead, he takes control of powerful fighters, using their abilities and knowledge to win. He eventually possesses Vegeta, becoming the terrifying Super Baby Vegeta, and is considered the most frightening villain in Dragon Ball GT. The epic battle against Baby pushed Goku to his absolute limit, allowing him to unlock the powerful Super Saiyan 4 transformation. Goku’s incredible 10x Kamehameha during this fight made the battle a truly memorable moment for fans.
4. Zamasu / Goku Black (Dragon Ball Super)
Goku Black was one of the most shocking villains in the Dragon Ball universe. Originally a god-in-training named Zamasu, he developed a warped belief that mortals were a mistake. Driven by his arrogance and sense of superiority, Zamasu stole Goku’s body and became “Goku Black.” He then joined forces with another version of himself from an alternate future to try and destroy everything in Future Trunks’ timeline.
Zamasu wasn’t incredibly strong on his own, but his inability to die made him nearly unbeatable. The situation became truly dire when he merged with Goku Black, creating Fused Zamasu – a being of immense divine power, endless life, and overwhelming hatred. He became so powerful that even Vegito, the combined force of Goku and Vegeta in his strongest form, struggled to defeat him. As Vegito gained the upper hand, Fused Zamasu became increasingly erratic, switching from confident superiority to furious anger.
The battle became so intense that destroying the enemy was no longer an option. Ultimately, Goku had to call upon Zeno, who erased the entire timeline to completely eliminate Zamasu. This made fused Zamasu a truly terrifying villain – not simply defeated, but wiped from existence altogether.
3. Jiren (Dragon Ball Super)
Jiren, from Universe 11, was the most powerful fighter in the Tournament of Power. While not truly a villain, his opposition to Universe 7 made him appear as one. He was incredibly strong, and no one attempted to fight him until the very end of the tournament.
Even with abilities comparable to Destroyer gods, his power surpassed even his ally, Top. He easily defeated Goku while Goku was in his Super Saiyan Blue form, and remained unfazed even when Goku mastered Ultra Instinct. Ultimately, it took the combined strength of Goku, Frieza, and Android 17 to finally defeat him, demonstrating he was too powerful for any single fighter.
2. Broly (Dragon Ball Super: Broly)
The movie *Dragon Ball: Broly* gave a new depth to the character of Broly, moving beyond his reputation as simply a furious fighter. As one of the last remaining Saiyans, he was known as the ‘Legendary Super Saiyan,’ a wildly powerful being with seemingly endless potential who grew stronger even during battles. Broly’s immense strength allowed him to overcome even Goku and Vegeta in their Super Saiyan Blue forms, and he even fought directly against Golden Frieza.
Despite everything he’d been through, Broly still had the energy to battle Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta, pushing them to use their most powerful attack, the Limit Ultra Kamehameha. However, this version of Broly isn’t simply a raging beast; he’s a warrior who’s been misunderstood. Recognizing his incredible potential, Goku eventually becomes friends with him, gaining a powerful and trustworthy ally.
1. Moro (Dragon Ball Super – Manga)
Moro is a villain from the manga version of *Dragon Ball Super* who was a uniquely powerful threat. Unlike most fighters in the series, he didn’t use martial arts – his power came from magic. Called the Planet-Eater for his destructive ability, he destroyed countless planets and battled multiple Supreme Kais before the Grand Supreme Kai managed to seal him away. After being imprisoned by the Galactic Police for a very long time, Moro escaped when the seal began to fail.
Moro’s power to absorb energy made him the most dangerous enemy the Z Fighters had ever encountered. He could drain energy from anyone – even planets and the entire universe! Luckily, Vegeta learned a technique to counter his energy absorption, and Goku achieved a new level of mastery called Ultra Instinct. Despite this, Moro remained determined to destroy Earth, ultimately forcing Goku to destroy the source of his power and defeat him permanently.
