Throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man created a large number of suits of armor – dozens in total – but he didn’t actually wear most of them. In the first Iron Man film, Tony Stark built three suits, and he created three more for Iron Man 2. By the time Avengers arrived, Iron Man had reached his seventh suit, which he used during the Battle of New York. In Iron Man 3, Tony designed a remarkable 35 suits; however, he only wore one – the Mark 42, inspired by the Extremis technology – during the movie. While many of these suits appeared on screen, Stark ultimately destroyed them all before the film ended. He continued to innovate, adding three more suits in Age of Ultron, two in Civil War, one in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and a final three in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Interestingly, Bruce Banner wore one of these last suits instead of Iron Man himself.
Although Iron Man had many powerful armors throughout his adventures, there were a few exceptionally strong suits that he unfortunately never had the opportunity to use.
10) Mark XXXV – Red Snapper
The Red Snapper was created as a rescue suit for disaster situations. It was one of the many suits of armor in Iron Man 3 that JARVIS deployed to battle Aldrich Killian and his Extremis forces. Its name comes from the dual red, retractable pneumatic pinchers it features, which can also be detached. This armor was built to be tougher than Iron Man’s standard suit, able to endure extreme conditions like tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes, making it ideal for saving people in danger. However, it wasn’t designed for fighting, and it was ultimately destroyed by the Extremis soldiers during the battle.
9) Mark 28 – Jack
The Mark 28 Iron Man armor was nicknamed Jack. It was part of the Iron Legion, a collection of armors Tony Stark built following the Battle of New York, and first appeared in Iron Man 3. What’s special about this armor is that it’s a Radiation-Zone Suit – it’s designed to repel radiation and keep the wearer safe. It’s one of only four armors capable of withstanding high levels of radiation. Like later models, it can wrap around the user’s body instead of needing to be put on. Its main weapons are repulsors, a small Unibeam, and mini-missiles launched from its shoulder pads. It was among the final 21 armors still functioning after the fight with Aldrich Killian. This makes it a valuable asset in dangerous situations, especially those involving radiation.
8) Mark 38 – Igor
Igor is the Mark 38 armor from Iron Man 3, and it’s better described as a helpful tool than a weapon. It was built for heavy-duty tasks and was part of the Iron Legion, which assisted Iron Man in his fight against Aldrich Killian. The suit gets its name from its look – its bent shape resembles the classic horror character Igor. Although it isn’t made for powerful attacks, it possesses incredible strength and is physically stronger than any other armor, capable of handling objects up to ten times its size. It does have one offensive ability, its Unibeam, which can destroy obstacles and clear away rubble.
7) Mark XXI – Midas
The Mark XXI armor, also called Midas, was one of the Iron Legion suits featured in Iron Man 3. The suit gets its name from the legendary King Midas, because it was entirely gold – reflecting the myth that everything Midas touched turned to gold. It was specifically built for high-altitude flights and could, in theory, even travel into space. The design was based on the Mark VII armor, the one Iron Man wore in the Avengers film, but with a distinctive chrome Gold Titanium Alloy finish. Like Iron Man’s other suits, the Midas armor is equipped with Repulsor rays, a powerful Unibeam, and missile launchers built into its shoulder gauntlets. Although it was part of the fight against the Extremis soldiers, it wasn’t actually shown in combat during the movie.
6) Mark XXXIX – Gemini
Gemini is the Mark XXXIX armor, designed to function as a suit for use in space. It first appeared in Iron Man 3 and was also called Starboost because it could handle the harsh conditions of space – including extreme cold and radiation – and had its own oxygen supply to keep Tony Stark alive for longer. Tony created this armor after his primary suit couldn’t handle the strain of reaching orbit; he needed something more durable. Gemini was also one of Iron Man’s quickest suits, capable of exceeding the speed of sound. It’s armed with a powerful Concussive Cannon for offense. This suit saw action and survived the Extremis conflict in Iron Man 3.
5) Mark XLI – Bones
The Mark XLI Iron Man armor is nicknamed Bones, which is fitting considering its appearance – it looks like an external skeleton. Because it has minimal armor plating, the inner workings of the suit are visible. This armor was mainly created to give Iron Man increased speed and agility due to its lightweight design. While not as quick as the Mark XL, it’s the most adaptable of all his suits. It features the standard repulsors and Unibeam found in Iron Man’s other armors, but it’s more vulnerable to damage. Notably, in Iron Man 3, the armor impressively broke apart into multiple sections, each independently attacking soldiers before reassembling.
4) Mark XVII – Heartbreaker
The Mark XVII armor, also called Heartbreaker, was one of the suits Tony Stark created for the Iron Legion. It earned the nickname Heartbreaker because of its large chest area, which can fire incredibly strong blasts – more powerful than typical Unibeams. Classified as an Artillery Level RT Suit, it was built for intense combat situations. The main Unibeam Projector delivers more energy than any previous version, using both focused and widespread beams to maximize impact. It also features Repulser Shields for defense. The suit was reinforced with four additional titanium plates to withstand heavy attacks. Its power was demonstrated when it attempted to help Red Snapper and ultimately played a key role in rescuing Rhodey. This armor destroyed numerous Extremis soldiers.
3) Mark XXV – Striker
The Mark XXV armor, also called Striker, first appeared in Iron Man 3. It gets its name from its strong, jackhammer-like hands, which can break through concrete and more. This armor was originally designed for construction work and is known for its incredible strength. It’s also quite durable, able to withstand electrical shocks and very high temperatures. While the jackhammers are its main weapons, it’s also equipped with repulsers and the Unibeam. During the fight against the Extremis soldiers in Iron Man 3, the Striker armor played a key role; JARVIS directly controlled it to fight numerous enemies and even saved Rhodey. It destroyed more soldiers than almost any other Iron Man armor.
2) Mark 48 – Hulkbuster 2.0
In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man used his Hulkbuster Armor during a massive fight with the Hulk. This armor was extremely strong, protecting Tony Stark from Hulk’s attacks. Following that, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner worked together to create the Mark 48, also called the Hulkbuster 2.0. They believed a more powerful armor was needed to defeat Hulk if necessary, making it even stronger than the original. However, Iron Man never actually used this upgraded armor. Instead, Bruce Banner wore it in Avengers: Infinity War when Hulk wouldn’t transform and fight. The armor successfully defended against attacks from Thanos’s Black Order and the Outriders, proving to be an incredibly powerful suit.
1) Mark XLIX – RESCUE Armor
The Mark XLIX is the RESCUE Armor, and it’s potentially the most powerful suit Iron Man ever designed – even more so than those seen in the films. It debuted in Avengers: Endgame, and Pepper Potts famously piloted it during the fight against Thanos. This armor boasts improved strength, resilience, and endurance. It’s also remarkably fast and maneuverable while flying. Notably, when Pepper destroyed one of Thanos’s ships with a single blast, the energy output was greater than anything Iron Man’s suits had demonstrated. It seems Iron Man created this armor as his ultimate protective measure, intending it for Pepper Potts and their daughter, rather than for himself.
