DC Comics stands apart from Marvel, despite sharing some common ground. While both universes feature concepts like the multiverse, they explore them in unique ways. A similar pattern exists with character power levels. Both Marvel and DC have incredibly powerful heroes, but DC’s characters generally reach even greater heights of power and significance. This extreme power level in the DC Multiverse also makes its villains more formidable, as they must be capable of challenging heroes with almost god-like abilities.
Look, as a movie fan, I’ve learned that being powerful doesn’t guarantee a win. We’ve seen so many strong heroes fall – even die! – in DC films. It just proves that raw power isn’t everything; it’s not a magic ticket to victory.
10) Hal Jordan

Hal Jordan is considered the most powerful of the Green Lanterns. A fearless fighter pilot, he used incredible willpower to maximize the potential of his power ring. However, his inability to save Coast City drove him to seek more power, leading him to destroy the Green Lantern Corps and become the entity known as Parallax. While possessed, he attempted to reshape the universe, but was stopped by Green Arrow. Later, when the sun was extinguished during the Final Night event, Hal sacrificed himself to reignite it. He eventually returned as the Spectre before ultimately regaining his life and status as the greatest Green Lantern.
9) Firestorm

Firestorm was a popular superhero from the late 1970s through the mid-1980s, but his popularity waned as the decade progressed. By the 1990s, he was largely forgotten. This led to a storyline called Identity Crisis, where Firestorm helped fight the villain Shadow Thief. During the battle, Shadow Thief obtained Shining Knight’s sword and fatally wounded Firestorm, causing a breach in his nuclear-powered form. He was forced to fly away and explode. A new Firestorm eventually appeared, but both Ronnie Raymond and Dr. Martin Stein, the two individuals who made up Firestorm, remained dead for some time. Stein returned first, and Raymond reappeared later during the Blackest Night event.
8) Captain Atom

Captain Atom is incredibly powerful, but he’s died repeatedly in DC Comics. These deaths almost always happen the same way: something breaks through his protective outer layer, causing him to explode. His most famous death occurs in the classic story Kingdom Come, set in the future. Captain Atom is often brought back to life when writers need a hero of his strength, usually to act as a powerful figure controlled by others – often resulting in conflicts with Superman or similar characters. Eventually, he’s killed off again, and the cycle repeats.
7) Doctor Fate

Doctor Fate is a powerful hero who has died repeatedly throughout comic book history. The source of Fate’s power is a magical helmet inhabited by the ancient Lord of Order, Nabu. While the helmet grants incredible magical abilities to whoever wears it, it seems to come with a deadly cost. Several people have worn the helmet, including Kent Nelson, Peter and Linda Strauss, Inza Nelson, Jared Stevens, and Hector Hall – all of whom eventually died. Kent Nelson has even returned from death only to die again. Currently, Khalid Nassour wears the helmet, continuing a long and dangerous legacy – the role of Doctor Fate seems to be cursed.
6) Martian Manhunter

Martian Manhunter is often underrated, especially considering his past sacrifices. He was famously captured and killed by Libra during the Final Crisis storyline – some believe Libra turned him into the living embodiment of the Anti-Life Equation, while others think he was simply controlled by it. This act demonstrated Libra’s power to the Injustice Gang, proving he could grant any wish in exchange for loyalty to Darkseid. Martian Manhunter remained deceased until the Blackest Night event, after which he played a crucial role in saving the universe during Brightest Day. Following the New 52 reboot, he successfully reestablished himself as a prominent hero.
5) Superboy

Superboy was created as a clone of Superman, with genetic material from Lex Luthor added to make him stable. He first appeared after Superman’s supposed death, stepping up to protect Metropolis. Later, he assisted the original Superman in defeating Cyborg Superman. Superboy continued his heroic efforts, playing a key role in the formation of both Young Justice and the Teen Titans. Eventually, the truth about his origins came to light, and he developed a relationship with Wonder Girl. This set him on a path to a fateful confrontation during the 2005 DC Comics event, Infinite Crisis. There, he battled Superboy-Prime, losing their first encounter. A rematch followed, and Kon-El managed to defeat Prime, but at the cost of his own life. He was later brought back to life in Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds.
4) Zatara

Giovanni Zatara was a magician during the Golden Age of performance, but unlike others, he actually possessed magical powers. He could cast spells by speaking phrases backward, becoming a remarkably powerful magic user. He worked alongside heroes like those in the Justice Society and the All-Star Squadron while mastering every facet of magic. He later had a daughter, Zatanna, with his wife, Sindella, and taught her both stage magic and genuine spellcasting. Though he eventually retired, Zatara was drawn back into action by John Constantine to help fight a terrible threat: the Great Darkness and the demons of Hell, alongside Swamp Thing. Tragically, Zatara sacrificed himself to power a spell that saved the world, bursting into flames at the table while his daughter, Zatanna, could only watch.
3) Barry Allen

Barry Allen, the second hero known as the Flash, was a founding member of the Justice League and became one of Earth’s most celebrated heroes. He dedicated himself to protecting Central City, learning from earlier speedsters like Jay Garrick and Johnny Quick, and even mentored Wally West. After defeating his archenemy, Reverse Flash, Barry seemingly retired to the 30th century to be with his wife, Iris, who had secretly faked her death. However, during the Crisis on Infinite Earths event, he tragically died. The Anti-Monitor captured him due to Barry’s ability to travel between universes, and though he briefly escaped and destroyed a powerful weapon capable of annihilating universes, it cost him his life. He remained deceased for 23 years, until his return in Final Crisis #2 in 2008.
2) Supergirl

Supergirl tragically died during the Crisis event while attempting to save her cousin Superman from the Anti-Monitor. Before her death, she was a very popular teenage superhero, fighting crime with iconic heroes like Batman, Robin, and Batgirl, as well as future heroes from the Legion of Superheroes. Her death, along with that of The Flash, symbolized the end of an era for DC Comics, which was the intention of Crisis. While Supergirl eventually returned, it wasn’t as the original Kara Zor-El until the 2004 storyline, “The Supergirl from Krypton.”
1) Superman

The story of Superman’s death in “Death of Superman” was a landmark event for DC Comics. Although Superman had seemingly died before, those instances weren’t considered official parts of the main storyline, and fans never truly believed he would stay dead. His battle with Doomsday pushed him to his absolute limit, and he remained deceased for a significant period, prompting the emergence of four temporary replacements. He was eventually brought back to life by the robotic systems within the Fortress of Solitude, allowing him to defeat the villainous Cyborg Superman and save the planet. While he has died several times since in official storylines, Superman always returns – as fans always expect him to.
