As a cinephile, I’ve encountered situations where a film is engaging, only for a mind-boggling twist ending to turn it into campy fare. On the flip side, some movies are so implausible from start to finish that they leave you scratching your head, but their twist endings make the viewing experience all the more intriguing and enjoyable. The following ten films serve as exceptional instances of movies with mind-blowing twist endings, many of which are terrible in their own right, yet contribute significantly to their overall cinematic impact. Brace yourself for some spoilers ahead!
Here’s an example of how you could rephrase the first sentence: Occasionally, a film captivates me, and then a shocking twist comes into play that transforms it from a masterpiece to mere melodrama.
1) Serenity
Serenity” is a mystery thriller movie featuring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. Due to its negative reception during test screenings, the studio, Aviron Pictures, chose not to advertise or promote the film. The story revolves around Baker Dill (McConaughey), a fisherman who aspires to catch a big fish. When his ex-wife reappears and asks him to eliminate her current husband, it causes him to question everything he thought was real.
In the movie Serenity, initially portrayed as an intricate blend of erotic neo-noir suspense, the unexpected plot twist transforms the film into something comically absurd. Towards the climax, it’s disclosed that Baker is merely a character within a video game, modeled after a soldier named John Mason. The game creator, Patrick (Mason’s son), incorporated this fictional character to vent his feelings, but ends up enacting real-life violence against Mason after the twist unfolds. This abrupt ending feels disconnected from the movie’s first half, almost like watching two different films combined.
2) The Happening
M. Night Shyamalan’s body of work is brimming with unexpected plot twists, as seen in movies like “The Village” and the latest release “Old“. However, the twist in “The Happening” stands out as a comedic highlight. In this film, an apocalyptic narrative unfolds where worldwide suicides are first thought to be due to a terrorist act involving harmful biological agents and a neurotoxin.
In the movie’s conclusion, it emerges that the harmful gas leading to suicides is actually emitted by plants as a form of revenge against human pollution. Although this concept is intriguing, the unintentional cheesy element is so prominent that it becomes challenging to accept the ending as sincere.
3) Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
In the seventh movie of the Transformers series, titled “Rise of the Beasts,” the story unfolds in 1994 and centers around the Autobots and Maximals as they engage in a battle against the determined Terrorcons. These Terrorcons are on a mission to acquire an interdimensional artifact.
In the final scenes of “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts”, we discover that the whole movie was intended as a prelude for a collaboration between the Transformers and G.I. Joe cinematic worlds, linking the two franchises. For some viewers, this hint at a crossover might have been thrilling; however, it also seemed like an unoriginal money-grabbing move that undermined the film’s overall significance due to its inherent absurdity.
4) Remember Me
After the success of Twilight in 2008, one of Robert Pattinson’s early films, Remember Me, explores a romantic tale between two tormented individuals set in New York City. The surprising and controversial ending of Remember Me sparked strong reactions, making the film quite divisive. However, its unpredictability can leave viewers utterly bewildered.
Towards the conclusion of “Remember Me”, Robert Pattinson’s character, Tyler Hawkins, heads to his father’s workplace, which turns out to be the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. This unexpected and poignant ending transformed this usual romantic film into a powerful, thought-provoking piece that still sparks conversation due to the stunning audacity of its cinematic decision.
5) Iron Man 3
The unusual turn of events in Iron Man 3 significantly impacted its reputation within the Marvel Cinematic Universe fanbase. The story primarily revolves around Iron Man, who is desperately trying to safeguard everything dear to him from the malevolent Mandarin, portrayed by Ben Kingsley.
In the final scenes of “Iron Man 3”, what initially appears as the true Mandarin character turns out to be a fake, serving as a decoy. The character known as the Mandarin is actually an actor named Trevor Slattery, who was hired by the real antagonist, the dangerous scientist Alden Killian (played by Guy Pearce). This character later claims the Mandarin identity for himself. Many Marvel enthusiasts found this plot twist to be confusing and detracted from the film’s potential greatness; however, the absurdity of the ending provides a humorous conclusion.
6) High Tension
In essence, “High Tension” is an outstanding slasher movie, yet its climax presents a twist that unravels the entire plot. Directed by Alexandre Aja, this film follows the journey of two college friends, Marie and Alex, as they visit Alex’s rural family home for a tranquil weekend escape. However, their serene getaway is disrupted by a ruthless killer who slaughters Alex’s family and abducts her, but fails to locate Marie.
In “High Tension”, Marie appears to chase the truck of a supposed madman throughout much of the movie, using a yellow car. However, the climax of the film takes an unexpected turn when it’s revealed that there was no actual madman. Instead, Marie, who is mentally unstable, has been the killer all along. She murdered Alex’s family and kidnapped her. It appears that Marie suffers from psychosis, mistaking herself for the victim and believing a boogeyman was responsible for the crimes. The twist leaves viewers bewildered, creating a thought-provoking experience. However, there are inconsistencies such as who was driving the sports car during the chase scenes, which remain unanswered.
7) Don’t Worry Darling
Under the guidance of director Olivia Wilde, the movie titled “Don’t Worry Darling” was a scintillating sci-fi thriller that stirred immense excitement at its premiere. However, behind-the-scenes drama significantly influenced the film’s reception following its release. Featuring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles in lead roles, “Don’t Worry Darling” portrayed a housewife named Alice residing in a utopian community during the 1950s. Yet, as Alice delved deeper into her surroundings, she grew suspicious of the other women in her neighborhood and the town itself, uncovering secrets that were far from harmonious.
The final scene of “Don’t Worry Darling” reveals that the story is not set in the 1950s as it appears, but in the present day. Alice, the protagonist, has been unwittingly placed in a trance-like state by her husband and confined to a simulation where she plays the ideal housewife. Her husband leaves for work in reality and then enters the simulation when he returns home. While intriguing, this twist ending seems somewhat heavy-handed and unnecessary, as it shifts the film’s tone from suspenseful to a confusing mix of genres.
8) Wild Mountain Tyme
Wild Mountain Tyme” is an underappreciated romantic comedy featuring Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan. The film follows a conventional will-they-won’t-they narrative, but surprises viewers with an unforeseen, mind-bending climax. In this movie, we follow the story of Rosemary and Anthony, who spent their childhood in the Irish countryside. Rosemary has always harbored feelings for Anthony, a reserved man believed to hear whispers from the fields. Despite his lack of reciprocation, they continue to encounter each other throughout the film.
Towards the end of the film, it becomes clear that Anthony’s lack of romantic interest in Rosemary, as she felt it, was due to his belief that he is actually a honeybee. This idea leaves the audience puzzled, causing them to question the movie they have just seen and contemplate on the directors’ intentions.
9) Safe Haven
Based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks, the movie Safe Haven, which received mixed reviews, features Julianne Hough as a woman seeking fresh beginnings in a new town, where she assumes the name Katie. As she develops feelings for a widowed father named Alex (Josh Duhamel), Katie’s turbulent history and hidden identity gradually come back to haunt her.
It turns out that the character Katie, whom we thought was a woman, is actually Erin. She’s trying to hide from her abusive detective husband who she’s accused of killing. However, things take a surprising turn when it’s revealed that he wasn’t really dead in the first place and starts hunting for Erin. The most unexpected twist comes when Erin and another character Alex confront her ex-husband. It is then disclosed that Jo, a woman Erin befriended early in the movie, has been deceased the entire time and was actually the spirit of Alex’s late wife. This feels quite strange as if Jo’s purpose was to bring Katie and Alex together. The ending is very tropy, and the concept of a dead spouse guiding a new relationship seems more creepy than intended.
10) Planet of the Apes (2001)
Among the least favored movies in the Planet of the Apes series, the 2001 remake’s plot twist primarily stands out due to its alteration of the original film’s cherished twist ending. In contrast to the 1968 Planet of the Apes, where it is disclosed that the ruling apes are not from their own planet but Earth, at the end of Tim Burton’s remake, it is revealed that the apes inhabit another planet called Ashlar, yet they still control Earth. This significant shift in the storyline left some viewers frustrated as they felt there was no justification for this unnecessary modification to the classic tale.
