Action movies often feature memorable character names, and some are particularly clever. These ‘aptronyms’ perfectly suit the person who has them – imagine a florist named Todd Flowers, or Kevin Bacon becoming a butcher! Sometimes, like Han Solo, a name hints at a character’s lifestyle (even with a loyal sidekick like Chewbacca). Beyond that, great action movie names are also catchy and flow well, whether through rhyme or repeating sounds. Here’s a look at some of the most unforgettable and amusing examples.
We considered many fantastic action movie character names, and a few strong contenders didn’t quite make our final list. These honorable mentions include Robert Rath (Sylvester Stallone in Assassins), Jack Slater (Arnold Schwarzenegger in Last Action Hero), and Nicolas Cage’s characters Dr. Stanley Goodspeed (The Rock) and Memphis Raines (Gone in 60 Seconds).
10) John Matrix in Commando

A follow-up to the movie Commando is reportedly in development. While the original film doesn’t completely rule out a sequel, it’s hard to see the appeal unless Arnold Schwarzenegger reprises his role as Dutch Schaefer.
Let’s be honest, the original Commando is a product of the 1980s. Its soundtrack is pure ’80s – and thankfully so, because it’s incredibly memorable. Just as unforgettable is the last name ‘Matrix.’ Interestingly, the people who chose that name had no idea how perfect it would be for an action hero when The Matrix came out in 1999 and changed the action movie landscape.

9) Lincoln Hawk in Over the Top

While some enjoy Over the Top for its nostalgic feel, it’s fundamentally a movie about arm wrestling. It’s difficult to make that sport seem truly exciting on film.
At least he’s called Lincoln Hawk – a name that perfectly suits someone who’d say things like, “I just put my hat on backwards, and it’s like flipping a switch. Suddenly, I feel like a completely different person… I don’t know, like a truck, like a machine.” The same quirky logic applies to his statement, “I always wanted to be a milk shake.”

8) Chev Chelios in Crank

While not the worst movie on this list – its sequel is arguably worse – Crank is still pretty rough. However, it’s worth mentioning because it let Jason Statham show a different side of himself than his role in The Transporter, proving he could handle more varied leading roles.
Interestingly, Chev Chelios is the only name on this list that uses alliteration – where the words start with the same sound. It’s also a bit of an unusual name, given that Chelios is a Greek surname and ‘Chev’ seems to be a nickname for ‘Chevy,’ likely referencing the car brand.

7) John Spartan in Demolition Man

The surname ‘Spartan’ is perfectly suited to the character in Demolition Man, who seems like he belongs to a different era. It’s a classic example of an aptronym – a name that perfectly reflects a person’s qualities.
John Spartan is a police officer who often bends the rules, much to the mayor’s annoyance. He’s been frozen and revived in a future where even minor offenses aren’t tolerated. With the equally rebellious criminal, Simon Phoenix, also back from the past, authorities need someone as fearless and uncompromising as Spartan to stop him.

6) Mason Storm in Hard to Kill

If you’re familiar with those classic scenes of Steven Seagal running in a funny way or breaking boards with a rope around them, you’re thinking of Hard to Kill. Besides Under Siege, it’s arguably the most iconic film in his career – the one that immediately comes to mind for many of his fans.
The film gives Steven Seagal a suitably dramatic name – Mason Storm – which is particularly clever given the movie culminates in him raiding the villain’s home.
5) Johnny Utah in Point Break

Considered one of the most enjoyable and visually appealing action movies of the 1990s, Point Break really shines because of the connection between its stars, Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze, and Lori Petty. The film is also famous for its thrilling surfing, skydiving, and chase scenes. Plus, it helped launch Keanu Reeves’ career as an action star.
Johnny Utah is quite a name to start a career with! It’s almost as if his parents predicted he’d one day be going undercover to catch a gang of surfing bank robbers and gave him the perfect surfer name. This isn’t a made-up identity – it’s the name he was born with, even before he and his partner, Angelo Pappas, learned about the case.

4) Machete in Machete

Released in the 2010s, Machete is arguably Robert Rodriguez’s greatest achievement. It feels like he was given a huge budget and complete creative freedom to make the movie he always wanted.
This movie is funny from beginning to end, and it’s delightfully over-the-top. It finally gives veteran actor Danny Trejo the starring role he’s earned. He plays Machete, a character he briefly appeared as in Spy Kids, but this time with full focus. Though his real name is Isador Cortez, everyone just knows him as Machete – it’s his reputation, what he’s known for, and he definitely doesn’t use text messages!

3) Vilain in The Expendables 2

It makes perfect sense that the most memorable villain in the Expendables movies has the best name. That’s saying something, especially when you consider the other characters are called Lee Christmas, Yin Yang, Toll Road, Hale Caesar, and Mr. Church!
Jean-Claude Van Damme’s character, Vilain, is simply the best. He’s only known as Vilain – no first name, no hint if it’s a nickname, just Vilain. The name itself immediately tells you everything you need to know about his role in the story. And it’s amusing to imagine Stallone yelling, “Get up, Villain!”

2) Marion Cobretti in Cobra

For anyone who enjoys Sylvester Stallone’s action movies, especially the Rambo films, Cobra is worth watching. Interestingly, it represents Stallone’s original idea for Beverly Hills Cop before the film evolved into the Eddie Murphy comedy we know today.
This film, much like the next one, is relentlessly grim and violent, perfectly capturing the ‘shoot first, ask questions later’ attitude common in the 1980s. Despite this, it has some memorable qualities. Brian Thompson delivers a truly frightening performance as the villain, there’s a bizarre scene where Stallone uses scissors to cut a pizza, and his character is nicknamed ‘Cobra’ – his full name is Marion Cobretti. It’s delightfully cheesy; imagine if someone named Jeffrey Water Moccasin went by the nickname ‘Cottonmouth’ – that’s the level we’re at.
1) Gino Felino in Out for Justice

Gino Felino is arguably the most hilariously named character in movie history. What makes it even funnier is that it’s in a very serious, extremely violent film.
The movie Out for Justice features a dull main character with a predictably rhyming name, and shockingly violent scenes – like when the villain (played convincingly by William Forsythe) brutally shoots a woman for simply honking her car horn. While it’s one of the most disturbing of Steven Seagal’s films, it does offer some amusement thanks to the constant references to how skilled ‘Gino Felino’ is at handling difficult situations.
