10 Top Fighters In The Game Of Thrones Universe

Cersei Lannister famously said in Game of Thrones that you win or you die, but many characters are the ones doing the killing. The HBO series quickly became known for its intense violence, showcasing not only shocking deaths but also realistic fight scenes and massive battles. While death often feels arbitrary in George R.R. Martin’s world, many characters consistently demonstrate that their own survival is due to skill and strength, not luck.

Both Game of Thrones and its related shows, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, have showcased some of the most skilled fighters in the world of Westeros. While a few of these characters met untimely ends that didn’t quite match their reputation, they’ve all proven themselves as formidable warriors, either through their stories or what we’ve seen them do on screen, and earned their place in the history of A Song of Ice & Fire.

10. Arya Stark

A Girl Who Has No Name, But Many Kills

Arya Stark experiences the most significant development as a fighter throughout Game of Thrones. At the start of the show, she’s a young girl who wants to learn swordplay instead of traditional skills like sewing. Though she begins training with Syrio Forel, he’s just the first of many teachers who help mold her into the skilled assassin she eventually becomes.

Throughout Game of Thrones, Arya Stark gains incredible fighting skills while traveling with The Hound and training with the Faceless Men. By season 8, she’s become a remarkably skilled warrior. She impressively survives her first battle against the White Walkers at Winterfell, and her clever strategy is actually what allows her to defeat the Night King.

9. Khal Drogo

The Dothraki Ruler Would’ve Been Bad News For Westeros

Unlike the knights of Westeros, who fight with a certain code of honor, the Dothraki are known for their brutal and savage warfare. Khal Drogo, their leader in Game of Thrones, perfectly embodies this, taking Daenerys Targaryen as his wife. Though his time on screen was cut short by a fatal infection, Drogo clearly lived up to his fearsome reputation as an invincible khal, leaving his widow to lead the Dothraki after his incapacitation.

Had Drogo lived, Game of Thrones would likely have been a very different show. He was planning to invade Westeros with Daenerys, and his fighting skills were incredibly formidable – he dispatched opponents with brutal speed. It’s fascinating to consider how he might have fared against Westeros’s most skilled warriors.

8. Robb Stark

What He Lacked In Political Smarts, He Made Up For With Results

Robb Stark made several errors that ultimately led to the Red Wedding in Game of Thrones. However, his natural talent as a military leader allowed him to achieve significant success during the War of the Five Kings. While the HBO series doesn’t show his battles directly (similar to the books), we learn through other characters that Robb was able to defeat even Tywin Lannister, inflicting major losses on the Lannister army.

Looking back, it’s clear why the Lannisters resorted to underhanded tactics to defeat Robb Stark and his army. Despite losing support from the Karstarks and Freys, Robb remained popular due to his military successes. Without the Red Wedding, he likely would have won the War of the Five Kings, as he hadn’t lost a single battle up to that point.

7. Ser Duncan The Tall

The Legendary Hedge Knight Has A Long Way To Go

Dedicated followers of A Song of Ice & Fire recognize Ser Duncan the Tall as a famous knight in Westeros’s history. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms shows the beginning of his story, when he was a relatively unknown hedge knight. Similar to his ancestor in Game of Thrones, Dunk quickly becomes well-known after winning a duel against Aerion Targaryen, leading Aerion to concede defeat in the first season of the spin-off.

Even though Duncan hasn’t yet become a legendary fighter by the end of the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, records from Game of Thrones show his story will eventually fill four pages in the Kingsguard’s official history book. As the series goes on, we’ll likely see Duncan earn that reputation, if the historical accounts are accurate.

6. Ser Barristan Selmy

Joffrey’s Biggest Mistake Was Taking Away His Cloak

While some might question the depth of their friendship, Daenerys Targaryen clearly benefited from having the highly skilled Ser Barristan Selmy as an ally and advisor in Game of Thrones. Barristan had a long and storied history, serving as a loyal protector to both the Mad King, Aerys II Targaryen, and later, Robert Baratheon. He was already a celebrated warrior as a young man, famously defeating Rhaegar Targaryen in a tournament at Harrenhal.

Joffrey dismisses Barristan Selmy from the Kingsguard, claiming he failed to protect King Robert from a wild boar, but Barristan was still a formidable warrior despite his age. Viewers of Game of Thrones rarely get to see Barristan fight, and he’s ultimately killed in an ambush by the Sons of the Harpy in Meereen. As a result, his legendary skills are largely known only through stories, not shown on screen.

5. Brienne Of Tarth

The Lady Of Bear Island Fights Like One, Too

Brienne of Tarth makes a striking first impression in Game of Thrones by winning a tournament – and being the only woman to do so. Though she doesn’t officially become a knight until the final season, Brienne consistently embodies the ideals of knighthood. Her strength is undeniable, demonstrated by her victories over formidable opponents like The Hound, earning the respect of Jaime Lannister, and even defeating a bear in combat.

In the later seasons of Game of Thrones, Brienne dedicates herself to serving and protecting Sansa Stark, although she doesn’t participate in the Battle of the Bastards. She makes it through the Battle of Winterfell against the White Walkers, possibly thanks to Arya Stark’s timely defeat of the Night King. Ultimately, as the leader of Bran Stark’s Kingsguard in the series finale, Brienne likely becomes an inspiration for future warriors in Westeros.

4. Daemon Targaryen

He May Not Fight Fair, But He Fights Well All The Same

Daemon Targaryen isn’t known for being honorable or kind, but House of the Dragon demonstrates he’s a formidable warrior. He’s skilled enough to concern members of his brother Viserys’s council, especially since Daemon is next in line for the Iron Throne if Viserys doesn’t have a son. Whether he’s harshly punishing people in King’s Landing or defeating opponents in tournaments, Daemon rarely shows compassion.

Look, I get it, Daemon Targaryen isn’t always the most pleasant guy. But honestly, his skill in battle is just unbelievable. He almost single-handedly won back the Stepstones for the Iron Throne and took down the Crabfeeder – a real menace! And in season two of House of the Dragon, he actually takes Dragonstone all by himself, proving he’s terrifying even without a dragon. He’s a force to be reckoned with, even if he is a bit rough around the edges.

3. Jon Snow

From A Night’s Watch Rookie To The King In The North

From the beginning of Game of Thrones, Jon Snow quickly proves himself as a skilled warrior with the potential to become one of Westeros’s best. He rapidly rises through the ranks of the Night’s Watch, effectively leading the defense against the Wildlings by season 4. Although he’s tragically killed in season 5 due to the betrayal of his own men, he’s resurrected by Melisandre and goes on to demonstrate his exceptional combat abilities, notably helping Sansa take back Winterfell from Ramsay Bolton.

As a huge fan, I’ve noticed that the show really leans into how incredibly powerful Jon Snow becomes in a fight, especially in the later seasons. He gets through some insane battles – surviving a Wight ambush, taking down White Walkers with Longclaw, and even facing an undead dragon! But honestly, while he’s a fantastic fighter, a lot of his wins feel like they rely on luck as much as skill. It’s exciting, but sometimes feels a little too convenient.

2. Jaime Lannister

The Kingslayer Is Tough To Beat, Even With A Handicap

When Game of Thrones begins, Jaime Lannister is likely the most skilled fighter in all of Westeros. Despite feeling remorse for killing the king during Robert’s Rebellion, he’s initially arrogant and confident, demonstrated by his attack on Ned Stark. Even after Robb Stark captures him, Jaime confidently proposes a duel for his release, but Robb wisely refuses, recognizing Jaime’s superior fighting ability.

During season 3, Jaime loses his right hand to soldiers from House Bolton, which threatened to end his career as a fighter. But he doesn’t give up. In season 4, he trains with the mercenary Bronn, and by the end of the series, he’s regained his skill, fighting at Winterfell and ultimately defeating Euron Greyjoy in a duel after returning to King’s Landing.

1. Ser Arthur Dayne

Westeros Remembers Arthur Dayne As The Best There Ever Was

Fans of Game of Thrones briefly saw Ser Arthur Dayne in a single scene during season 6. It was a flashback showing a famous duel between him and Ned Stark that happened outside the Tower of Joy during Robert’s Rebellion. While the scene is often remembered for revealing clues about Jon Snow’s family history, the fight itself is considered by many to be one of the best in the entire series.

During a battle, Arthur Dayne proved why he was considered the best fighter in Westeros, almost defeating Ned Stark’s entire group while fighting with two swords. He only lost because Howland Reed, already injured by Dayne, surprised him with a sneak attack from behind. Even so, it’s difficult to picture anyone else in Game of Thrones winning a one-on-one fight against him.
