With the X-Men joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s a comic book arc from a decade ago that offers a fresh approach to their introduction. Past X-Men films centered on the conflict between Professor X and Magneto, and later explored groups like the Hellfire Club and villains like Apocalypse. They even revisited the Dark Phoenix Saga twice, building towards a storyline involving Mister Sinister. But there’s another, more science fiction-focused side to the X-Men universe, and this comic storyline could be a great way to bring that to the screen.
Let’s explore why the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s X-Men could benefit from featuring the Black Vortex storyline in upcoming films.
X-Men & Guardians of the Galaxy Teamed in Black Vortex

The Black Vortex is a 2015 Marvel Comics storyline where the X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy joined forces. The connection between the teams was Star-Lord’s relationship with Kitty Pryde. Trouble began when Star-Lord’s half-sister tried to turn him in for a reward offered by a villain named Mister Knife. The situation escalated when Star-Lord discovered Mister Knife was actually his father, J’son, and came under attack during a video call with Kitty, prompting the X-Men to intervene.
The X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy discovered the Black Vortex, a powerful artifact created by the Celestials. It can unlock a person’s full potential, but at a terrible cost – often, the loss of their identity. Throughout history, civilizations have been destroyed by those who succumbed to its power. Now, the X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Nova must fight to prevent the Slaughter Lords from obtaining and wielding the Black Vortex.
It’s fascinating that several heroes from the Guardians of the Galaxy and X-Men encountered the Black Vortex. While some considered accepting its power, they ultimately refused the corrupted enhancements it offered. For example, Storm could have gained the ability to destroy planets with her weather control, Beast could have accessed limitless knowledge, and Kitty Pryde might have become godlike, but they all chose to remain unchanged.
Introducing the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe this way would be exciting, and it would also deliver on the studio’s commitment to expanding into more cosmic storylines. The X-Men comics have a rich history with cosmic elements, including conflicts with empires like the Shi’ar and battles against villains like The Brood. Integrating the X-Men into this larger cosmic side of Marvel would be a substantial shift, setting it apart from previous phases.
This Could Bring Guardians Back With the X-Men

There’s potential to revive the Guardians of the Galaxy with a new lineup. While the original team is likely gone, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 introduced a fresh group including Phylla-Vell, Adam Warlock, Cosmo, Rocket, and Groot. With Peter Quill back on Earth, a relationship with Kitty Pryde could create a reason for the Guardians to seek his help. Vin Diesel has hinted at Groot’s continued role in the MCU, which could pave the way for the Guardians’ return.
Rumors suggest Nova could join the Marvel Cinematic Universe through a Disney+ series, potentially setting up an interesting storyline. This could give the X-Men a unique role when they eventually appear in the MCU, and even allow for a return of some of the Guardians of the Galaxy. It would also be great to see the friendship between Nova and Star-Lord play out on the big screen. Although the first X-Men movie is still a few years away, the ‘Black Vortex’ storyline seems like a promising path to explore.
