10 Years Ago Today, Daredevil’s Worst Season Gave Us 1 Marvel Story I Doubt Born Again Can Beat

The original Daredevil series on Netflix kicked off a shared superhero universe, and its popularity led to its revival within the main Marvel Cinematic Universe as Daredevil: Born Again. For years, fans questioned whether the Netflix shows were still considered official parts of the Marvel story, but Charlie Cox’s return as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home paved the way for a continuation on Disney+. The first season of Born Again re-established many events from the Netflix series and aimed to build upon a storyline that Daredevil originally explored a decade ago.

Daredevil is returning in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, premiering on Disney+ March 24th. This season promises to be the most ambitious Daredevil story yet, as Matt Murdock assembles a team to confront Mayor Wilson Fisk and his new task force dedicated to stopping vigilantes. It’s a direct continuation of the events from season one and highlights how much the character has evolved since first appearing on Netflix over ten years ago.

Daredevil Season 2 Released 10 Years Ago Today (& It’s The Weakest Daredevil Season)

The first season of Daredevil came out in 2015, and Netflix released the second season exactly ten years ago today, on March 18, 2016. While the first season centered on Matt Murdock’s battle with Wilson Fisk, the second season shifted focus to his ongoing struggle with The Hand, the return of Elektra, and the introduction of a new crime fighter: Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher.

Even with the introduction of several memorable storylines, season 2 of Daredevil isn’t the show’s strongest point. The core of the season focuses on Matt Murdock’s fight against Kingpin’s criminal empire, and it’s evident that the creators were most passionate about that conflict. A significant portion of the season is dedicated to building the groundwork for The Defenders, which ultimately didn’t quite live up to expectations. The reimagined version of The Hand lacks impact, and the absence of Wilson Fisk and Ben Urich is noticeable throughout.

Season 2 of Daredevil isn’t just the weakest of the original three seasons; it’s actually worse than the first season of Daredevil: Born Again. While the first Born Again season had its flaws, its best moments were more impactful than anything in Daredevil season 2. The storyline involving Mayor Fisk and the reappearance of Bullseye created some truly thrilling scenes. Even though season 2 of the Netflix series is more consistently paced, it doesn’t reach the heights of the final episodes of Born Again.

Season 2 of Daredevil remains a strong entry in the series and offers plenty to enjoy for fans. However, each season of Daredevil is exceptionally well-made, creating high expectations. While still good, season 2 feels a little overshadowed because it was released between the truly outstanding seasons 3 and (presumably) 1, both of which are arguably the best in the show.

The MCU Will Never Top Season 2’s Daredevil vs. Punisher Arc

Although season two of Daredevil had some weak spots, Jon Bernthal’s performance as the Punisher was a clear standout. He quickly became a fan favorite, leading to his own spin-off series, a return in Daredevil: Born Again, and an upcoming Disney+ special. Many consider the MCU’s version of the Punisher to be the best adaptation of the character, and it all started with his introduction in Daredevil.

The second season began with a fantastic storyline featuring Daredevil confronting The Punisher. It wasn’t just a physical fight; Matt and Frank clashed over their very different beliefs about justice. Their rooftop conversation and Frank’s powerful courtroom statement are two of the most memorable moments in the Daredevil series. The season also hinted at a connection between Frank and Karen, which quickly captured the attention of viewers.

The recent Daredevil: Born Again brought back Daredevil and The Punisher, but it didn’t live up to their excellent storyline from season 2. The Netflix series really nailed their complex relationship, and while it was enjoyable to see them team up again, that earlier story remains the best. Even though season 2 had some weaker moments with the focus on The Hand and Elektra, the Daredevil and Punisher dynamic was a highlight of the entire Defenders saga on Netflix.
