10 Years Ago Today, One of Marvel’s Best TV Shows Set Up a Cancelled Spinoff We Still Wish Had Happened

Despite strong support from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the first season of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD initially faced criticism. Many found its episode-by-episode format lacked depth and a sense of importance, and the main character, Skye, didn’t quite connect with viewers as the writers hoped. Critics and fans felt the show was relying too much on the popularity of the Marvel brand instead of standing on its own. However, everything changed when the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier revealed that HYDRA had secretly taken over SHIELD. This unexpected twist gave the show the continuous storyline it needed, allowing it to move beyond simple cases and build its own unique story within the Marvel universe. From that point on, Agents of SHIELD became less reliant on the movies and evolved into a creatively bold adaptation of comic book material.

Despite a rocky start, Agents of SHIELD became a beloved part of the Marvel universe thanks to its compelling characters. The connection between Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons, which began as a cute working relationship, developed into one of TV’s most intense and heartbreaking romances. Daisy Johnson also had a remarkable journey, growing from a tech consultant on the sidelines to a powerful Inhuman hero. Later, characters like Mack and Yo-Yo added much-needed heart to the show as the challenges became greater. While the series created many popular characters, the chemistry between Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter was particularly strong, so much so that the writers considered giving them their own show.

Bobbi and Hunter’s Agents of SHIELD Farewell Is Still Emotional

Today marks ten years since the Agents of SHIELD episode “Parting Shot” aired on March 22, 2016. This episode served as a goodbye to characters Bobbi and Hunter. In it, they were sent to Siberia to stop HYDRA leader Gideon Malick from creating a safe haven for Inhumans with the help of the Russian government. Their mission failed when Hunter saved the Russian Prime Minister and Bobbi killed General Androvich, the Inhuman Minister of Defense, resulting in the deaths of two high-ranking Russian officials. To avoid an international crisis, Bobbi and Hunter agreed to be disavowed – essentially giving up their identities and cutting all ties with SHIELD. The final scene, where the team silently toasted their lost colleagues from across a bar, remains a particularly poignant moment in the series.

I remember when Bobbi and Hunter left Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – it felt like they were setting up a whole new show! ABC ordered a pilot called Marvel’s Most Wanted focusing on them, and the idea was really cool: they were fugitives, on the run with a price on their heads and no help from anyone. They teamed up with this mysterious adventurer, Dominic Fortune, who promised to protect them if they helped him with his own plans. They even brought in Oded Fehr as a seriously intimidating villain, and Fernanda Andrade played Fortune’s niece, Christina. They finished filming in March 2016 and sent the pilot to ABC, but sadly, the network didn’t pick it up. It never found a home anywhere else, which is a shame – the finished pilot has never been released, and we’ve never gotten to see what could have been.

It’s still disappointing that Marvel’s Most Wanted was cancelled, especially since Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood showed over two seasons that their characters’ complicated relationship could have carried a whole series. It’s also strange that a finished pilot episode remains unused. With Avengers: Secret Wars potentially leading to a fresh start for the MCU, Marvel has a chance to bring back characters from Agents of SHIELD. Hopefully, Bobbi and Hunter will be among them, maybe even in a new version of Marvel’s Most Wanted.

Agents of SHIELD is currently available to stream on Disney+.

Should Marvel release the pilot for the cancelled series Most Wanted, or would it be better to reintroduce Bobbi and Hunter in a new series connected to the upcoming Secret Wars event? Share your thoughts in the comments and join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
