Marvel fans have a lot to be excited about! The first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday revealed that Steve Rogers, the original Captain America, is returning. While he’s not back in uniform yet, he’s facing a new challenge: fatherhood. It seems Steve settled down with Peggy Carter in another timeline and they’ve started a family. Being a dad likely comes naturally to Steve, considering he’s always been a mentor to younger heroes.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe might be creating a problem for itself by giving Captain America a child, and it’s one they may regret. This isn’t about major villains like Doctor Doom or the multiverse; instead, it casts a much older, previously debated line of dialogue in a far more disturbing light.
The MCU Drew a Line in the Sand for One of the Original Avengers in 2015

As a huge Marvel fan, I always loved how quickly the Avengers became a real team in the first movie. There wasn’t much time for getting to know each other with the world at stake, it was all about figuring out how to stop Loki! But that post-battle shawarma scene? That’s where you really see them bonding. By Age of Ultron, they were like a well-oiled machine, instantly celebrating victories. And who could forget the party at Avengers Tower? Seeing Natasha and Bruce finally admit their feelings for each other was great, even if Ultron did ruin the mood pretty quickly. Despite all the chaos, they still managed to have those really meaningful conversations, which is what makes them so compelling.
Bruce confesses to Clint Barton that his struggles with the Hulk make it difficult to imagine a future with someone. Natasha immediately counters, admitting she feels just as damaged as the Hulk. She attributes this to her history as an assassin and a procedure from her Red Room training that left her unable to have children. The conversation is clearly awkward, and it’s a moment that can’t be easily undone. The Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t trying to soften this difficult truth; instead, it’s leaning into it.
Avengers: Doomsday Is Going to Make Sure Black Widow Is Excluded in More Ways Than One

After Age of Ultron, Natasha stopped talking about wanting a family, and honestly, with the constant battles, it’s easy to see why. She really threw herself into her work, and it became even more crucial when Thanos snapped half of all life away in Endgame. Thankfully, all that dedication paid off when Scott Lang showed up with a way to travel through time. We got one last ride with the Avengers, and they managed to gather everything they needed. It breaks my heart, but Natasha didn’t get to see how it all turned out – she sacrificed herself so Clint could get the Soul Stone. Her friends grieved, but quickly got back to the mission, knowing that’s exactly what she would have wanted.
So, after everything with Thanos, the Avengers all kind of went their separate ways, which was expected. But it’s interesting to see a few of them stepping into parenthood! Thor adopted a daughter, Love, in his last movie, and Hulk introduced his son, Skaar, on She-Hulk. Now, Steve Rogers is the fifth original Avenger to become a parent. It makes you wonder about Natasha, though – she seemed pretty focused on other things, and probably wouldn’t have wanted kids. It feels a little bittersweet seeing all these potential new heroes showing up, especially since it doesn’t look like the MCU has any major plans for most of them right now.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
