11-Year-Old Horror Movie Finally Gets Major Sequel Casting & Timeline Update

The It Follows sequel is finally moving forward again with a major casting and timeline update.

The 2015 horror film became a big hit with both critics and audiences. However, a sequel, called They Follow, wasn’t announced until 2023. Thankfully, the original writer and director, David Robert Mitchell, and star Maika Monroe were both returning. Originally, filming was planned to begin in early 2025, but it had to be delayed due to scheduling issues.

After a long wait, production on the sequel to They Follow is moving forward. Naomi Ackie is in talks to star alongside returning actress Maika Monroe. Details about Ackie’s character are currently being kept under wraps, but the story will take place a decade after the events of the first film. Production is expected to begin this summer, according to Deadline.

David Robert Mitchell wrote and directed It Follows, a horror film starring Maika Monroe. She plays a college student who is stalked by a terrifying, shape-shifting supernatural being after a sexual encounter. This entity relentlessly pursues her and her friends in Detroit, and she discovers the only way to escape the curse is to pass it on to another person through sexual intimacy.

In addition to the main cast, Keir Gilchrist, Olivia Luccardi, Lili Sepe, Daniel Zovatto, Jake Weary, Bailey Spry, Debbie Williams, and Ruby Harris also appear. Ingrid Mortimer, Alexyss Spradlin, Mike Lanier, Don Hails, Leisa Pulido, and Ele Bardha portray different forms of the same character.

Released to critical acclaim at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, It Follows earned a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised it as intelligent, unique, and genuinely frightening – a rare modern horror movie that’s both complex and truly chilling. While critics loved it, audiences gave it a 66% rating.

The horror film It Follows was a major financial success, earning $23.3 million globally on a budget of just $1.3 million. It’s now celebrated as one of the decade’s best horror movies and played a key role in launching the careers of actress Maika Monroe and director David Robert Mitchell, whose new film, The End of Oak Street, comes out in theaters on August 14th.

As a total film buff, I’ve been keeping a close eye on Naomi Ackie – she’s everywhere right now, and for good reason! I recently spotted her in A24’s Sorry, Baby, a really interesting film by Eva Victor, and she also had roles in Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 and Chris Columbus’ The Thursday Murder Club. I especially loved her in Zoë Kravitz’s fantastic first directorial effort, Blink Twice. Right now, you can catch her in Boots Riley’s I Love Boosters, which is wild and inventive. And get this – she’s going to be in Clayface, a DC horror film, coming out October 23rd. Seriously, she’s one to watch!
