It’s been twelve years since the Marvel Cinematic Universe released what many consider its best pure action film, and no movie has surpassed it since. The MCU started in 2008 with Iron Man, a somewhat unexpected choice for a first superhero movie that ultimately proved to be a brilliant beginning. While the franchise has seen both successes and disappointments over the years, with memorable moments culminating in Avengers: Endgame, nothing has quite matched the thrilling action of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Released on April 4, 2014, Captain America: The Winter Soldier showed that Marvel movies could be complex and thrilling, going beyond typical superhero stories. It’s a spy thriller with incredibly well-done action sequences – many fans still consider it the best action movie in the MCU.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier Remains an Untouched MCU Masterpiece

Fifteen years ago, Captain America: The Winter Soldier showed everyone that the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be more than just typical superhero action. When it came out, audiences immediately recognized it as something different and a step above previous MCU films. It felt like a classic spy thriller, similar to Mission: Impossible, but with costumed heroes instead of secret agents.
The movie was packed with exciting scenes, like Captain America battling fighter jets and surviving a long fall after jumping from an elevator. Beyond the action, Robert Redford delivered a fantastic performance as the villain Alexander Pierce, and Chris Evans was phenomenal as Captain America. The film also worked well as a spy thriller, with a compelling plot about traitors infiltrating the highest levels of the U.S. government and secretly working to control the country.
I was so thrilled with how well Captain America: The Winter Soldier did – it made over $700 million worldwide! It really showed Marvel that they could make a fantastic movie focusing on just one hero, not just relying on big team-up events. But honestly, what really sticks with me, even now, is the action. It’s still some of the best, most exciting stuff the MCU has ever put on screen – I’d put it up against anything, even a massive movie like Avengers: Endgame.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier Has Several Action Scene Masterpieces

Movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, and the Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy films have some amazing fight sequences. But a lot of the action relies heavily on computer-generated effects, which can make everything feel similar and lose impact. Captain America: The Winter Soldier was different. It was designed as a spy thriller and prioritized real, practical stunts whenever possible, setting it apart from those other films.
One of the most impactful moments in the movie is a surprisingly small scene. Captain America steps onto an elevator with what he thinks are SHIELD agents, but quickly realizes they’re actually HYDRA members working against their country. Among them is Brock Rumlow, who would later become the villain Crossbones. Cap immediately assessed the situation, giving the ten agents a chance to step away. When none of them did, he swiftly took them all down, including Rumlow, before making his escape.
Another highlight was a thrilling car chase where Nick Fury was being pursued by HYDRA agents who were trying to eliminate him. The chase was incredibly well-done, comparable to the realistic action sequences in the Fast & Furious movies, and ultimately led to a confrontation between Fury and the Winter Soldier. While CGI was used, the scene felt grounded as a genuine car chase and shootout, which was much more effective than the typical superhero battles involving energy blasts and flying.
The highway chase scene, with Winter Soldier attacking Captain America, Black Widow, and Falcon, was remarkably intense despite involving four characters. The fight felt deeply personal, like many key moments in Marvel movies. The scene culminated in a powerfully choreographed hand-to-hand fight between Captain America and Bucky Barnes, where Cap attempts to reason with his former friend. Remarkably, the fight was achieved without relying on CGI.
The film immediately established its intense tone with a thrilling opening sequence aboard a ship. While Captain America’s initial parachute jump was memorable, the real action began when he and Batroc faced off, while SHIELD agents engaged in a gritty, war-like battle. This sequence in Captain America: The Winter Soldier signaled that the movie wouldn’t hold back, and the raw, energetic action it delivered remains unmatched by any Marvel Cinematic Universe film since.
