12 Years Ago, This Incredibly Weird Sci-Fi Series Became An Instant Comic Masterpiece

For over three decades, Image Comics has consistently published exceptional comics by empowering creators to tell the stories they envision. This approach has proven particularly successful recently, as a new wave of talented writers and artists sought the freedom Image offered. Many of the leading comic book writers of the 2010s were developing their own projects at Image, including Rick Remender. Remender’s work for Image, particularly the series Black Science with artist Matteo Scalera, is considered some of the best of the 21st century and has become a favorite among readers.

Black Science was a really inventive sci-fi series. It followed scientist Grant McKay on a journey through different universes, forcing him to navigate the challenges of interdimensional travel while also confronting personal problems with his life and family. The story, despite its fantastical elements, was deeply rooted in relatable characters, which is what initially drew readers to Image Comics years ago. While it might not be the most famous Image title, Black Science is considered one of the best multiverse stories ever published.

Black Science Is the Most Unique Multiverse Story of the 21st Century

As a huge fan of sci-fi, I recently dove into Black Science, and wow, it really delivers on the multiverse concept. It centers around Grant McKay, a scientist with a complicated past, who builds this machine called ‘the Pillar’ – basically a device for hopping between different universes – for a rich guy named Kadir. Now, Grant’s life is a mess – he’s got a family but is also having an affair, and Kadir really doesn’t like him. Things go south fast when their first trip gets messed up, leaving the team stranded in a bizarre universe, right in the middle of a war they have no clue about. They team up with a Native American Shaman, and the whole story becomes about trying to fix the Pillar and just survive. Trust me, that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the crazy worlds you’ll encounter in this book!

Marvel’s use of the “multiverse” in its movies has become somewhat simplistic. However, the comic series Black Science explored the idea in a much more creative way. It presented universes that differed drastically – some due to altered historical events, others where magic and advanced technology coexisted, and even worlds filled with superheroes. While readers encountered alternate versions of familiar characters, they didn’t feel like the same people, just with different names. This approach gave the comic a unique feel, distinct from many mainstream multiverse stories.

Black Science Is an Enthralling Trip Across Reality

Beyond the compelling story, Black Science boasts truly captivating artwork. Matteo Scalera’s distinctive style perfectly complements the series’ imaginative worlds, delivering the dynamic and impactful visuals this kind of story deserves. Throughout the 43-issue run, the art consistently shines, not only creating memorable scenes but also enhancing the book’s emotional depth.

Reading Black Science as it was originally released was a bit challenging, with infrequent issues towards the end making it better suited for collected editions. However, now that the series is complete, it’s fantastic. The first story arc immediately grabs your attention, and the book maintains that momentum right through to the satisfying conclusion. Issue #43 is a standout, one of the best comics I’ve ever experienced, and a perfect finish to a unique sci-fi story. I highly recommend giving Black Science a try – it’s a truly unforgettable journey through different realities.
