It’s unusual for a TV show to reach 100 episodes, and even rarer for one to end on a high note. Thirteen years ago, a brilliant science fiction series did both, delivering a perfect conclusion while still leaving fans wanting more from the story and its world.
The sci-fi series Fringe concluded with its 100th and final episode, “An Enemy of Fate,” on January 18, 2013, and fans are still talking about it today. Despite a complex plot involving time travel, the finale was both emotionally powerful and a satisfying end to the show.
Despite a good ending, we still hope for more from the series. While Fringe wrapped things up nicely, there are ways to continue the story. Reviving it might mean changing some of the original finale’s conclusions, but if the revival is well-done, fans would probably accept it. And even if they don’t, the original series remains unchanged for those who prefer it that way.
The Fringe Finale Is Mind-Bending, But It’s A Perfect Ending To The Series

The fifth season of Fringe focused on the ultimate showdown with the Observers, but the conflict spanned across different time periods. The Observers planned to invade Earth in 2015, using their superior intelligence and technology to conquer the planet. To protect themselves and reverse the Observers’ takeover, Walter and September – an Observer who had developed human feelings – came up with a plan. This involved putting the team in amber, effectively freezing them until the right moment to save the world arrived.
In 2036, Olivia and Peter’s daughter, Etta, frees the team from being frozen in amber. However, Walter is captured, and his memory of the plan is erased. Luckily, Walter left behind video messages that help the team piece everything back together, though they soon discover the plan has a surprising twist.
The surprising revelation centered around September’s son, Michael, who was born from the Observers’ experiments. Interestingly, he was first introduced way back in the first season, in the episode “Inner Child.” Michael is an Observer with enhanced intelligence, but unlike others, he still feels emotions. The goal is to prove to the scientists who initiated the intelligence experiments that this kind of outcome is achievable, and that means getting Michael to the future. Originally, September was supposed to accompany him, but after being shot, Walter steps in, leading to a deeply emotional scene.
If their plan to travel to the future works, it will erase everything that happened after 2015, when the Observers gained control – including Walter, if he goes with Michael. Returning to the present would create a paradox, potentially bringing the Observers back, so Walter goes to the future and fixes things, effectively erasing himself from existence. The story truly ends with Peter and his family in a restored 2015, when Peter receives a letter from Walter containing a white tulip. This mysterious letter raises questions about when and how Walter sent it, hinting he might have found a way back from the future – a perfect starting point for a continuation of the story.
Even though Fringe only lasted five seasons, it remains beloved by its fans, and that love has continued to increase since the show ended. While a continuation isn’t guaranteed to be successful, fans would still welcome the opportunity to see a revival.
