Today marks the 13th anniversary of the cancellation of a fantastic, but overlooked, superhero series on Cartoon Network. Sadly, several episodes were never even shown, and now it’s nearly impossible to find online. It’s often difficult being a fan of older Cartoon Network shows because, while the network has created many iconic animated series, its past content isn’t always well-preserved and frequently disappears from streaming platforms.
It’s sad to note that Generator Rex struggled during its time on Cartoon Network. The superhero series ended 13 years ago today, on January 3, 2013, and its last season wasn’t given much support by the network. Many episodes were released online before they even aired on TV, and two episodes have never been shown. Currently, it’s also difficult to find on streaming services – you pretty much have to purchase the episodes digitally to watch them.
Generator Rex Ended 13 Years Ago Today

Today marks the 13th anniversary of the end of Generator Rex, which ran for three seasons on Cartoon Network. The show, consisting of 60 episodes, featured a unique superhero with the power to create anything he needed. Generator Rex is set in a world changed by a strange event involving tiny machines called nanites, which entered the bodies of all living things. This led to the emergence of dangerous creatures known as E.V.O.s, whose bodies were overtaken by the nanites.
The show features Rex Salazar, a unique character who can manipulate the tiny nanites within his body to create any tool or substance he needs. He can even control nanites in other people, leading to his mission to stop dangerous, out-of-control beings called E.V.O.s throughout the series’ three seasons. Created by Man of Action – the team known for the hit Cartoon Network show Ben 10 – it was part of a larger shared universe connecting several of the network’s popular action programs.
Man of Action, the creators of shows like Ben 10 and Generator Rex, previously shared their desire to build a shared animated universe connecting their series. However, Cartoon Network wasn’t on board with the idea at the time. While this led to two crossover events – Ben 10/Generator Rex: Heroes United and Ben Gen 10 – these are only available online and weren’t included with Generator Rex itself. This contributes to the feeling that Cartoon Network has largely overlooked the show over the years.
What Happened to Generator Rex?

Thinking about Generator Rex, its relatively short run on Cartoon Network was likely due to a few things. It aimed at a slightly older audience than Ben 10 did when it first started, and it aired during a popular period for that show, specifically the Ultimate Alien era. Ben 10 successfully transitioned to a time skip because it had already established a younger fanbase who grew up with the hero and were ready to see him handle more complex challenges.
Unlike some other shows, Generator Rex didn’t immediately grab kids’ attention. While it told a good story, similar in style to X-Men or Static Shock with its weekly adventures, it just didn’t quite resonate with audiences. It lasted for three seasons, but the final season had a bumpy release, premiering online before airing on Cartoon Network.
To make matters worse, two episodes from the last season never aired on Cartoon Network in the US. These missing episodes contained important details that would have provided more background for the finale, meaning viewers weren’t getting the full story. Over time, all of this contributed to Generator Rex becoming less well-remembered compared to other popular Cartoon Network shows.
It’s become more difficult to rewatch the show since it’s no longer available for free streaming and now requires payment per episode. What are your thoughts? Share them in the comments and join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
