Look, as a horror fan, I’ve seen franchises stumble – and sometimes fall – hard. It’s amazing how one bad movie can really ruin things, even after years of solid installments. We all remember Jason X sending Jason Voorhees to space, and Jaws 4: The Revenge was…well, let’s just say it wasn’t exactly terrifying. Those movies either killed the series completely or forced a reboot. But, even though one particularly criticized horror comedy from 2013 seemed to finish off its own franchise, a new release is proving that might not be the case after all!
For a long time, Scary Movie 5 seemed like a truly terrible sequel. The Scary Movie films never received great reviews – even the original, which gained a cult following, only earned a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But even dedicated fans started to lose interest with Scary Movie 4 in 2006, and Scary Movie 5 appeared to finish off the series. That is, until the surprise announcement of Scary Movie 6 in 2026.
Scary Movie 5 Was Released On April 12 2013

Malcolm D. Lee, known for directing Undercover Brother, helmed Scary Movie 5, marking the first time the series wasn’t created by the Wayans brothers or David Zucker. The Wayans brothers directed and wrote the initial two Scary Movie films, building on their success with earlier spoofs like I’m Gonna Git You Sucka and Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. While these earlier films didn’t receive rave reviews, they were commercially successful and have since gained a cult following.
After the Wayans brothers left the Scary Movie franchise following the second film, David Zucker—known for directing Airplane! and The Naked Gun—took over. While Scary Movie 3, which still starred Regina Hall and Anna Faris, was fairly well-received, Scary Movie 4 received criticism for its PG-13 rating. Many felt that toning down the series’ famously crude and raunchy humor was a mistake.
The Scary Movie franchise really lost its spark with the fifth installment. Although Scary Movie 5 featured cameos from celebrities like Snoop Dogg, Mac Miller, Sarah Hyland, and Terry Crews, it replaced Anna Faris, a central figure in the series, with Ashley Tisdale. Regina Hall, another beloved cast member, also didn’t return. The film’s attempt to parody a wide range of popular movies – including horror films like Paranormal Activity, Black Swan, Mama, and Sinister, as well as unrelated hits like Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Help – didn’t help its chances with audiences.
Scary Movie 6 Can Still Redeem The Franchise’s Reputation

At just 4% on Rotten Tomatoes, Scary Movie 5 was the lowest-rated film in the entire series. Many thought its poor reception would end the Scary Movie franchise and even spell the end of parody movies altogether. But the new Scary Movie coming out in 2026 shows that spoofs aren’t going anywhere, and the return of the Wayans brothers could mean better reviews for the series.
