13 Years Later, Crunchyroll’s Classic Dark Fantasy Returns With Anticipated Revival in July

Anime fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of a highly anticipated movie, which faced a significant delay but now has a confirmed release date. Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a popular anime franchise that gained recognition in the 2010s for its unique and darker approach to the magical girl genre. Following the success of the original TV series, a trilogy of films continued the story, and now, fans will finally get more content.

After 13 years since its last film, Puella Magi Madoka Magica is continuing the story and finally resolving a long-standing cliffhanger with a new movie, Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Walpurgisnacht: Rising. Production has faced several setbacks, including past release date changes—it was initially planned for February 2026—but the film is now scheduled to premiere in Japan this August.

New Madoka Magica Movie Confirms Release Date After Delay

The movie Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Walpurgisnacht: Rising will now be released in Japan on August 28th. After several delays since its initial planned release in 2024, a firm date has finally been set. This suggests the film is truly on its way to theaters, and hopefully, production will stay on track without further setbacks.

The production team apologized to fans for the delay and thanked them for their patience, confirming a new release date and asking for a little more time. Fans have been eagerly awaiting this new installment – the first original story in 13 years – and with the movie picking up after a major cliffhanger, the team suggests revisiting previous content as a refresher.

What to Know for New Madoka Magica Movie

The new film, Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Walpurgisnacht: Rising, continues the story from the 2013 movie, Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie Part 3: Rebellion, and brings back the original creators and voice actors. Magica Quartet, the team behind the original series, contributed to the story, while Yukihiro Miyamoto directed at studio SHAFT. Gen Urobuchi wrote the script, Ume Aoki designed the characters, and Yuki Kajiura composed the music.

I’m so thrilled to hear that the original voice cast is coming back! Aoi Yuki will be Madoka Kaname again, and we’ll get to hear Chiwa Saito as Homura, Kaori Mizuhashi as Mami, Eri Kitamura as Sayaka, Ai Nonaka as Kyoko, Kana Asumi as Nagisa, and even Emiri Kato as Kyubey! It’s fantastic they’re all returning. We don’t know who will voice the new characters just yet, and there’s no word on when we’ll be able to watch it outside of Japan, but I’m already so excited!
