I still remember exactly where I was when I first saw RoboCop! It’s been nearly forty years since Peter Weller’s Alex Murphy was tragically killed, only to come back as the iconic RoboCop. That 1987 film wasn’t just action-packed, it was brilliantly satirical, and it remains one of the best sci-fi movies ever made, in my opinion. There have been so many attempts to recapture that magic – sequels, reboots, TV shows, even video games – but nothing has ever come close. But honestly, that’s okay. As a fan, I know we’ll always have that original RoboCop movie, and that’s what really matters.
The enduring popularity of RoboCop fuels ongoing efforts to revisit the franchise, with new games, comics, and reboot plans consistently capturing fans’ attention. Now, that dedicated fanbase has a tangible symbol of their affection: a bronze statue of the iconic character. After more than ten years of planning, the statue is finally in place, standing watch over Detroit and serving as a tribute to the original RoboCop movie.
The Bronze RoboCop Statue Finally Takes His Post
Fourteen years ago, before social media was as common as it is today, a simple tweet sparked an idea for a Detroit landmark. The then-mayor of Detroit asked people on Twitter for suggestions to improve the city. Someone, not even a resident of Detroit, jokingly suggested a statue of RoboCop, arguing he’d be a better symbol for the city than the Rocky statue in Philadelphia and would even win in a fight!
The initial suggestion didn’t gain traction, but it unexpectedly sparked huge enthusiasm among fans. Shortly after the idea was shared online, news articles and petitions began circulating about a possible RoboCop statue, leading to a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for a bronze sculpture. In just six days, over 2,700 people contributed more than $67,000. However, the project faced numerous obstacles, including debates about whether a RoboCop statue was a suitable tribute. Practical issues, such as building the statue and finding a permanent location, caused significant delays, all of which were detailed in a comprehensive article by the Detroit Metro Times four years ago.
After years of anticipation, the RoboCop statue is now standing proudly in Detroit! You can visit it at 3434 Russell St. in the East Market area.
