14 Years Ago, Batman’s Best Animated Series Ended (And DC Studios Should Use it for Its Live-Action Future)

Today marks the 14th anniversary of the end of what many consider the best Batman animated series, and DC Studios could really benefit from looking back at it as they develop future live-action Batman projects. Batman is a cornerstone of DC Comics, and over the years, we’ve seen countless versions of the character. Each iteration attracts its own fanbase, and they all tend to be quite different from one another. As DC Studios prepares new Batman projects, revisiting past successes – like that animated series – could be a smart move.

Wow, can you believe it’s been 14 years since Batman: The Brave and the Bold finished its run on Cartoon Network? It feels like yesterday! What I loved about that show was how incredibly unique it was – it really gave us a Batman unlike anything we’d seen before, not just in animated series, but even compared to the live-action movies. It was such a refreshing take on the character, and honestly, I think DC Studios should consider going in that direction with a future Batman project. It was just that good!

What Is Batman: The Brave and the Bold?

Though it finished airing 14 years ago, Batman: The Brave and the Bold was a unique series for Warner Bros. Animation. It was the first animated show they released in high definition, and it boldly reimagined Batman by drawing inspiration from the classic Silver Age comics. This version of Batman frequently partnered with other famous DC heroes for exciting adventures against unusual villains. Diedrich Bader provided the voice for Batman, and his distinctive delivery perfectly captured the show’s fun and energetic spirit.

This version of Batman was noticeably more lighthearted and playful than most, letting the character be genuinely funny. It wasn’t afraid to embrace the sillier aspects of Batman’s history, which made it incredibly entertaining to watch. Each episode was unpredictable – one week might be a full musical featuring Neil Patrick Harris as the villain, the next a quirky adventure with the Bat-Mite (voiced by Paul Reubens), and the week after, a world-ending crisis. It was consistently engaging and perfect for watching each week.

Why DC Studios Should Be Like Brave and the Bold

I’m seriously excited about the future of Batman at DC Studios! They’ve got a project called The Brave and the Bold in the works, and it’s a fantastic sign. While it’s mostly drawing inspiration from the comics, I really hope they consider some ideas from the animated series too. Imagine a live-action Batman that instantly feels different – maybe a blue and more powerfully built suit, and a totally unique personality. That would be amazing!

Live-action Batmans often feel gloomy and burdened. It wouldn’t hurt to see the new Batman from DC Studios show a little humor or happiness without feeling out of character. Starting with a Batman who’s more hopeful, like the new Superman, would also allow the films to follow the optimistic tone of Batman: The Brave and the Bold, which could be a great direction for the future.

The series featured exciting collaborations between heroes across a vast universe, and Batman remained a steady, reliable presence throughout it all. It’s a perfect example of what DC Studios should aim for in the future. What are your thoughts? Share them in the comments and join the discussion in the ComicBook Forum!
