14 Years Later, Liam Neeson’s “Haunting” Survival Thriller Lands on Free Streaming

Liam Neeson is known for playing tough guys who take on overwhelming odds, usually against human villains. One studio executive wondered what would happen if he fought a pack of wolves instead, and the result was a surprisingly good action movie. It’s arguably one of Neeson’s best in the genre – even better than films like Taken, Non-Stop, and The A-Team – and the intense, brutal film, The Grey, is now available to stream for free.

You can now watch The Grey for free on Pluto TV! This 2011 action thriller stars Liam Neeson as Ottway, a wolf hunter who’s part of a group of oil workers stranded in the Alaskan wilderness after a plane crash. He must lead the seven other survivors to safety while being pursued by a pack of wolves. While it features Neeson, The Grey is a slower, more suspenseful film than his Taken movies – it’s similar in tone to A Walk Among the Tombstones. The film also stars Frank Grillo, Dermot Mulroney, Dallas Roberts, and Joe Anderson, and was directed by Joe Carnahan. It’s one of over 200 movies recently added to Pluto TV’s free streaming library.

After five tough weeks working at an Alaskan oil refinery, sharpshooter John Ottway (Liam Neeson) and his crew are flying home for a break. But a terrible storm forces their plane down in the frozen wilderness, leaving only eight survivors, including Ottway (Frank Grillo, Dermot Mulroney). As they try to walk south to safety, they face serious injuries, freezing temperatures, and a dangerous pack of wolves.

While The Grey features plenty of intense action, including Liam Neeson battling wolves, it’s more than just that. Beyond the beautiful, snowy scenery and Neeson’s character—a wolf hunter with Irish and American roots—the film is surprisingly touching. It’s a story about how people cope with hardship and survive, and it genuinely creates a sense of fear as the characters are relentlessly pursued by a pack of wolves.

What Audiences Think of ‘The Grey’

Open Road Films

Unlike many of Liam Neeson’s older action movies that went straight to DVD, The Grey was actually well-received by critics. It currently has an 80% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While general audiences were a bit more critical, giving it a 61% rating, the film still earned a lot of love from the over 100,000 people who reviewed it.

I was completely gripped by The Grey! It’s a really haunting and atmospheric movie – it just builds this incredible sense of dread and loneliness. Liam Neeson is fantastic in it, too – he really carries the film. I’ve read some reviews, and one person put it beautifully, describing it as a reflective survival thriller. Others just said they loved it, which pretty much sums up how I feel!

“So freaking good. Love this movie so much.”
