The brand new Nintendo Switch 2 has just been unveiled, which implies it’s still in its infancy. Consequently, there haven’t been any significant remakes or remasters for this console yet, but that doesn’t mean they won’t appear in the future. Notably, numerous games were given remakes or remasters on the original Switch, such as The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Pokémon Diamond, Super Mario RPG, Metroid Prime, Pikmin, Super Mario 3D World, Kirby’s Return to Dreamland, and more.
During the seven-year tenure of the Switch as Nintendo’s flagship console, numerous events took place. Given that it’s highly probable that the Switch 2 will have a similar lifespan, we can anticipate a deluge of remakes and upgraded versions. With its enhanced power, these revamped editions could surpass their previous versions. Consequently, here are fifteen games that Nintendo ought to reintroduce on the upcoming Switch 2 over the next few years.
15. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Many consider ‘The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess’ the best in the series, but it hasn’t received an updated version since its release on Wii U in 2016. Compared to other games, there’s been a significant longing for a modern remake of this game. The community eagerly anticipates a new Zelda title featuring current controls and graphics, and their desire is certainly reasonable.
14. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
In the realm of 2D platform games, not many can compare to the excellence found in “Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island”. Boasting exceptional music, level design, narrative, and bosses, it stands out as a unique gem amidst the sea of somewhat similar games that Nintendo has produced throughout the years. Regrettably, after three decades, its only remake appeared on the DS, which is a roundabout way of saying that a modern update is long overdue.
13. Donkey Kong 64
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel exhilarated by the lasting impact of “Donkey Kong Bananza” on our beloved simian hero. With his iconic status only growing stronger, it’s safe to assume we’ll be seeing more of Donkey Kong soon. Instead of embarking on a brand-new adventure that might require a considerable amount of time and effort, I humbly suggest Nintendo takes a different route – a refreshing remake of one of DK’s classic adventures!
By modernizing the graphics and fine-tuning the mechanics, they could breathe new life into a timeless gem like “Donkey Kong 64”. This revamp would undoubtedly enhance its charm and gameplay experience.
12. Super Mario 64
Is there a chance Nintendo will re-create Super Mario 64 in the future? It seems unlikely given their strategy to create scarcity after launching the limited-time Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection several years ago. However, fans have been eagerly waiting for its remake. Super Mario 64 was one of the first significant 3D platformers and revolutionized Mario’s world forever. Nonetheless, some aspects of the game, particularly the controls and camera, feel outdated, so a refresh on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 could be beneficial.
11. Animal Crossing
There hasn’t been any reboot or update for the beloved “Animal Crossing” franchise, and this comes as a shock given its popularity among Nintendo fans. Despite being one of their top-performing series, new games are released sporadically every few years. With the last release being “New Horizons”, there’s uncertainty about what’s next for the franchise. To bridge the gap more effectively, it could be advantageous for Nintendo to remake the original “Animal Crossing” game, as many modern gamers might not have had the chance to experience it. This move could pave the way for remakes of other well-received titles in the series, potentially delighting fans of the franchise. While online play wouldn’t be a significant feature, its absence would only be minimal.
10. Nintendogs
Caring for dogs in a video game on the Nintendo DS turned out to be an extraordinarily enjoyable experience, even if it involved doing something rather ordinary in real life. Lots of people perform this task daily, but the fun factor made it stand out. Unfortunately, this series has faded into obscurity since then, and it’s high time for its return. The original game was so good that it doesn’t require significant changes; a remastered version would suffice perfectly.
9. Super Paper Mario
The popular game “Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door” was a significant success for Nintendo towards the end of Switch 1’s lifespan. Generally regarded as the finest entry in the Paper Mario series, many fans cherished the enhancements offered by the remake. However, despite its potential to revitalize the franchise, it didn’t quite manage to regain its prominence. To rectify this situation, Nintendo could consider remaking another classic game, addressing some of the flaws present in the Wii version. If two well-executed remasters fail to stir enough interest, there might be a need to reconsider the franchise’s future. Yet, I have a feeling that such efforts would be sufficient to revive it.
8. Mario Sports Mix
The games Mario Golf: Super Rush and Mario Strikers: Battle League weren’t as great as some of the older Mario sports games. They didn’t quite capture the charm of the classics. One straightforward solution to rekindle that magic is by updating these games for a modern console. Since Mario Sports Mix already combines multiple sports, it would be less work than remaking individual games like Super Mario Strikers, Mario Super Sluggers, Mario Tennis, and others separately.
7. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Similar to Twilight Princess, t The Wind Waker. Its popularity has grown significantly over time, largely due to the bold decision to completely revamp its visual style. A remake was released on the Wii U back in 2013, but since then, gamers have been eagerly asking for a new version. However, it seems unlikely that this will happen as Nintendo has made The Wind Waker available on Switch Online for the Switch console instead.
6. Duck Hunt
The Switch and its potential successor seem to be lacking in the number of retro games available. While Nintendo Switch Online offers many titles, the retro gaming aesthetic seems to have waned. A return to this style could be beneficial, and one way to achieve this is by reviving a classic game like Duck Hunt. Despite its basic gameplay, it was incredibly engaging. With minimal effort required, Nintendo could release an updated version of this game in 2025. This unexpected move might even attract some veteran gamers to purchase the console again as a trip down memory lane.
5. Punch-Out!!
Likewise, it’s certainly due for an update that Punch-Out!! is worthy of a remaster. Few fighting games have as much iconic status as this one featuring Mike Tyson, and characters such as Little Mac continue to captivate fans due to their appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In fact, it’s primarily that game which currently represents the only substantial fighting game on Nintendo platforms. Consequently, reviving another dormant series by reimagining one of its classic titles could be an excellent move. Given the original from the late 1980s, it would likely prove to be a resounding success.
4. Star Fox
Star Fox has been less prominent lately, with its last new release being back in 2016. Over time, the series seems to have lost some of its appeal due to a decrease in new developments. Despite this, Nintendo might not be planning any fresh installments due to low demand for them, yet a remake could reignite interest. Fans would recall the greatness of the series and experience a surge of nostalgia, both potent factors that could potentially revive the franchise. Even if subsequent new titles aren’t desired, the remake itself could still be a success.
3. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Among all Zelda games, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is one of the hardest to find and play nowadays. This game can only be played on the Nintendo 3DS system, which isn’t widely used anymore. Unlike most other Zelda titles, it hasn’t been added to any Switch Online service, and there’s no remake available either. However, nearly every other Zelda game is accessible in some form. As such, A Link Between Worlds stands out as one of the least accessible games due to its limited availability on the Nintendo 3DS. A potential remake or update would be challenging due to the differences between the capabilities of the 3DS and the new Switch systems, but it could certainly offer a rewarding gaming experience for fans who have yet to play it.
2. Mario Party 2
Currently, as of now, there isn’t a brand-new Mario Party game exclusively for the Switch 2. While Super Mario Party Jamboree received an upgrade for the Switch 2, it doesn’t fit the bill. The same goes for the versions available on Switch Online. However, given that developers are likely working on something significant for the first authentic Mario Party game for the Switch 2, a potential placeholder could be a revamped version of an older title. For instance, considering Mario Party Superstars was essentially a remake of some classic games, one particular game from the series could be singled out and fully remade separately. Among these, Mario Party 2 might be an ideal choice due to its popular items and maps; although some maps have been redesigned in newer versions.
1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
It’s hard to believe that “The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past” hasn’t received a remake yet, given its significant role in the series. This game is often considered as the pinnacle of the 2D Zelda games and plays a crucial part in the franchise’s current success. The original was good, but its sequel didn’t fare quite as well. Enter “A Link to the Past,” the 2D game that not only elevated the series to new heights but also managed to save it from potential failure. I can’t fathom why there hasn’t been a remake of this gem, especially considering the success of the “Link’s Awakening” remake and the popularity of games in a similar style like “Echoes of Wisdom.” A remake of “A Link to the Past” could prove to be incredibly popular today.
