It’s been fifteen years since the Harry Potter films concluded with The Deathly Hallows: Part 2, but the story is returning to television with a new series planned for 2027. This reboot will feature a brand new cast, although some familiar faces from the original movies might make appearances on the HBO show. Warwick Davis has already confirmed he’ll be back as Professor Flitwick. However, one actor has decided not to return, and their reasons make a lot of sense.
In an interview with ScreenTime, actor David Thewlis was asked if he’d consider reprising his role as Remus Lupin. He jokingly but firmly said he wouldn’t, and hinted that he’s been asked about it multiple times before.
I don’t think I’d be right to reprise my original role – I’m too old for it now, and I have no interest in going back. I’ve really moved on from that character and honestly, I’m tired of discussing it.
Look, as much as I adore the ‘Harry Potter’ films – and I really do! – I wouldn’t revisit my role as Remus Lupin. Honestly, I’ve spent so much time discussing it all these years, I’ve had my fill. It’s been wonderful, but I’m ready to move on to other projects.

David Thewlis Is Right About Reprising His Role as Remus Lupin
It’s hard to picture anyone else as Remus Lupin, and David Thewlis has a good reason for not returning to the role. Now in his 60s, it wouldn’t be realistic for him to play a character who’s supposed to be in his 30s. Thewlis was the perfect age when he first played Lupin in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, but the age difference would be too significant now, making it hard for audiences to believe the portrayal.
With Paapa Essiedu, who is 35, taking on the role of Severus Snape, the new HBO series seems to be aiming for more age consistency with the other characters from the Marauder’s era. The previous movies featured Gary Oldman and Alan Rickman as significantly older than their characters were meant to be. Considering this, David Thewlis’ decision to allow another actor to play Remus Lupin makes sense, and it’s not the only reason a fresh take on the role is a good idea.
The Harry Potter Remake Should Avoid Casting Too Many Former Stars Anyway
Even if age wasn’t a factor, the new Harry Potter movie shouldn’t rely too heavily on the original cast, particularly for major roles. It would be okay to see former actors like Warwick Davis in smaller parts or quick cameos. But featuring them prominently would overshadow the new actors and make it harder for them to establish their own versions of the characters. It could also distract the audience, pulling them out of the story and focusing their attention on memories of the original films instead.
