Nintendo found a lot of success with sports games featuring its popular characters during the GameCube and Wii era. While titles like Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, and Mario Golf were already popular, the GameCube and Wii also saw many new sports games starring Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, and other characters from the Mushroom Kingdom – putting them in everything from baseball to soccer.
The idea of mixing several sports into one game reached its height with Mario Sports Mix, a fun and simple collection that showed how well the Mario characters worked in fast-paced, arcade-style sports. While the game did well for Nintendo, the company later shifted its focus to the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series. However, a new game similar to Sports Mix would be a welcome addition to the Switch 2, and could lead to more Mario Sports games in the future.
Mario Sports Highlighted The Potential Of The Nintendo Spin-Off Series

There’s a simple joy to playing Mario Sports Mix that makes a comeback for the series on the Switch 2 worthwhile. Originally released for the Wii in 2011, the game let you play basketball, dodgeball, hockey, and volleyball with your favorite Nintendo characters. Like other Mario Sports titles such as Mario Tennis and Mario Golf, Sports Mix built on the success of Mario Hoops 3-on-3 (Nintendo DS, 2006) by offering a full-fledged sports experience. The gameplay was easy to pick up, fast-paced, and especially enjoyable with friends. Games like basketball were quick and casual, while dodgeball offered more competitive, head-to-head action. As a fun bonus, the game even included characters from the Final Fantasy series, like Black Mage, Cactuar, and Moogle!
Mario Sports Mix’s biggest weakness was that its simple, arcade-style gameplay didn’t offer much depth. Trying to include multiple sports meant none of them felt fully fleshed out, especially compared to dedicated Nintendo sports games like Mario Super Strikers or Mario Super Sluggers. This lack of substance made the game feel repetitive faster than those other titles, and the weak computer opponents didn’t help. Despite receiving a middling score of 64/100 on Metacritic, players still enjoyed it, with nearly 2 million copies sold. This shows how strong the Mario Sports brand is, and why Nintendo should consider making another game in the series.
The Switch 2 Could Be The Perfect Place For A New Mario Sports Mix

One of the biggest problems with the original Mario Sports Mix could be easily solved today with downloadable content and updates. A new Mario Sports Mix could build on the solid foundation of the first game and then expand with more characters, levels, and features over time. This approach would also allow Nintendo to try out new game and sport ideas that might not warrant a full release on their own. It could even be a way to bring back older favorites like Mario Super Sluggers, starting with a simpler version in Mix before potentially developing a full standalone game. Ultimately, it’s a fantastic opportunity to experiment with different gameplay styles and discover an audience for new or revived titles.
A new Mario Sports Mix game could potentially revive Nintendo’s sports game lineup, filling the void left by the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series which ended in 2020. This game, especially on the Switch 2, could offer a variety of gameplay styles and tie into major sporting events like the World Cup or Olympics. It would also be a perfect opportunity to showcase the Switch 2’s unique features, perhaps even incorporating ideas from Nintendo Labo. Nintendo has consistently found success with accessible, multiplayer games that highlight its technology, and a Mario Sports Mix could become the new Wii Sports, focusing on fun and simple gameplay. The game could also pay homage to Nintendo’s classic sports titles like Ice Hockey and Excitebike with updated versions. Ultimately, a fresh Mario Sports Mix, alongside games like Mario Tennis Fever, could help Nintendo rebuild a strong presence in the sports game genre.
