16 Years Later, Yona of the Dawn Reaches Its Bittersweet Ending

Please be aware that this article contains spoilers from the Yona of the Dawn manga. Kusanagi Mizuho’s popular historical fantasy series, Yona of the Dawn, first appeared in Hana to Yume magazine in 2009 and was later adapted into an anime in 2014. Despite a long wait for a continuation, the series gained a large and dedicated fanbase who have continued to follow the story through the manga. Last year, the series began its final story arc, with Yona and her companions returning to Hiryuu Castle after a long journey across the Kouka Kingdom and its neighboring lands.

The latest issue of Hana to Yume magazine, released on December 19, 2025, marked the end of the series. The final story arc was particularly emotional, as Zeno makes a difficult decision to finally stop the centuries-long suffering of the Dragon Warriors. When her friends are threatened, Yona bravely puts herself in danger to protect them, with Hak and Soo-won providing crucial support. The series concludes with a poignant farewell as the characters part ways after the Dragon Gods vanish forever.

What Happens in Yona of the Dawn’s Finale?

When the Dragon Gods were gone, the special powers they’d given to the Dragon Warriors disappeared as well, making Jee-Ha, Kija, Zeno, and Shin-Ah just like everyone else. Though their powers had caused them a lot of pain, they now each decided to go their own way. They said goodbye to Yona and the others, hoping to reunite someday. Meanwhile, Yoon chose to remain at Hiryuu Castle with Yona.

Soo-Won, after risking his life for Yona and Hak, chose to step down as king. He realized he had taken the throne unfairly and that his actions against the previous king were motivated by personal feelings. He believes Yona, the true heir, is destined to be a great ruler and wants her to take the throne. Though the story didn’t show Hak and Yona getting married, they plan to do so in the future. A bonus story in the final manga volume, number 48, will likely show what happens with the characters after the main story ends.
