The world of anime and manga is heavily focused on action-packed shows aimed at young men (Shonen), which means many other great series don’t get the attention they deserve. While viewers often gravitate towards exciting battles, a lot of stories with strong plots and beautiful artwork are overlooked, especially historical dramas that don’t feature fantastical powers or settings. One example is Nobunaga Concerto, a manga created by Ayumi Ishii. It’s her only serialized work and stands out as one of the best historical Shonen series available. The manga first appeared in Shogakukan’s Monthly Shonen Sunday magazine (also known as Gesso) on May 12, 2009.
I noticed the manga went on hold back in March of 2023, and there wasn’t any explanation given at the time. Usually when a series pauses like that, it’s due to the author needing a break for health reasons, but we haven’t gotten official word on that. Thankfully, Anime News Network just reported it will be back! They said the next issue, coming out on July 10th, 2026, will include a new chapter. It was already planned that Volume 23 would finish the story, so it looks like we’ll get three more chapters to wrap everything up.
Nobunaga Concerto‘s Anime Sequel Is Long Overdue

The series is fairly well-known in Japan, but hasn’t become very popular in Western countries. The manga actually won a major award – the Shogakukan Manga Award for best shounen manga – back in 2011. In 2014, five years after the manga first came out, Fuji TV created an anime version with ten episodes. Even though the story and animation were good, it wasn’t renewed for another season.
This Shonen series hasn’t gotten much attention and risks being overlooked despite its potential. After twelve years with no news about a sequel anime, a continuation seems unlikely unless the studio decides on a large-scale revival. You can currently watch the original anime on Crunchyroll. A live-action movie adaptation came out in 2016, and the manga series has 22 volumes available – though it isn’t yet published in English.
What Is Nobunaga Concerto About?

Saburo is a high school student who has no interest in Japanese history – he doesn’t think it relates to his life at all. But suddenly, he’s transported back in time to the chaotic Sengoku Era, a period of war and political upheaval in Japan. To his surprise, he finds himself face-to-face with Oda Nobunaga, one of the most famous generals of that era.
Weak and needing rest, Nobunaga asked Saburo to stand in for him. The young lord quickly gathered everything Saburo would need and rushed him away from the castle. This surprising turn of events launched Saburo on a journey to live the life of a man who dreamed of uniting all of Japan.
