18 Years After Iron Man, Spider-Man Is Still Marvel’s Most Important Hero

The Marvel Cinematic Universe began with Iron Man in 2008, and the character quickly became a fan favorite throughout the series. While Iron Man was central to the MCU for its first ten years, Marvel had already found success with other studios. Before the MCU even started, the X-Men films performed very well at Fox, and Sony’s Spider-Man movies—particularly the first two—were both critically acclaimed and commercially successful. Now, seven years after Iron Man’s story concluded, Spider-Man has become the most important hero in the MCU, having first appeared in Captain America: Civil War in 2016.

Marvel is heavily invested in its upcoming two-part Avengers films scheduled for 2026 and 2027, but another movie releasing in 2026 has strong potential for success. Spider-Man: Brand New Day could reaffirm Spider-Man’s position as Marvel’s most valuable player.

Spider-Man Remains the Biggest Marvel Character in the MCU

Even before Iron Man’s story ended, Spider-Man established himself as Marvel’s biggest hero, quickly becoming a fan favorite. When it comes to global box office earnings, only the Avengers films and Deadpool & Wolverine have come close to Spider-Man’s success. Spider-Man: No Way Home earned an impressive $1.9 billion worldwide, boosted by the return of previous Spider-Man actors like Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, along with villains from earlier Sony Spider-Man movies. Spider-Man: Far From Home also performed exceptionally well, earning $1.1 billion on its own. Remarkably, every Spider-Man film has earned over $500 million globally, even those that weren’t critically acclaimed, like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3.

As a huge MCU fan, I’ve been looking at box office numbers, and it’s pretty clear how massive Spider-Man: No Way Home was. Only Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame earned more at the box office. Spider-Man: Far From Home also did incredibly well – only six other MCU films have made more money. When it comes to the billion-dollar club, Iron Man 3 stands alone as the only Iron Man film to hit that milestone, and Captain America: Civil War did it for Cap, even though it feels like an Avengers team-up. Since Endgame, only three movies have broken a billion: Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and the newest addition, Deadpool & Wolverine.

A major factor in the success of some recent Marvel movies is their appeal to fans’ memories. Spider-Man: No Way Home and Deadpool & Wolverine both featured characters from older films – the Sony Spider-Man series and the Fox X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises, respectively. The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars films seem to be continuing this trend, relying on familiar faces. However, not all Marvel movies focus on the past; Spider-Man: Far From Home, for example, was a story primarily about Spider-Man himself.

Spider-Man Remains Marvel’s Most Relatable Character

Stan Lee and Steve Ditko aimed to shake up superhero comics when they created Spider-Man. While DC Comics in the Silver Age focused on powerful, almost god-like heroes inspired by Greek mythology, early Marvel characters were inventors, explorers, monsters, and soldiers. Spider-Man was different: a relatable teenage boy who was bullied, gained powers by chance, and had to navigate life on his own. Unlike many heroes, he wasn’t wealthy or well-equipped; he was simply a kid trying to do the right thing, quickly discovering it wasn’t always simple.

This also applies to the movie versions of Spider-Man. While Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield each had their own take on Peter Parker, Tom Holland truly captures the essence of the character. He portrays a young man who always tries to do the right thing, but constantly faces setbacks and personal loss, leading him to blame himself. He’s resourceful, having to create his own equipment and rely on his intelligence to overcome challenges in a hostile world. More than any other Marvel hero, Spider-Man feels like an everyday person, which is why so many people connect with him.

Iron Man kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe and benefited from Robert Downey Jr.’s incredible performance, making him a fan favorite. But Spider-Man connects with audiences on a more personal level – people of all ages can easily relate to him. This makes viewers really root for him, and it shows in the huge numbers that Spider-Man movies consistently draw – more than almost any other superhero film. Spider-Man is truly Marvel’s biggest hero, and the upcoming film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, will likely prove that point once again.
