Today marks the 18th anniversary of Cartoon Network’s biggest crossover event, but it’s surprisingly difficult to watch online now. While Cartoon Network isn’t as popular as it once was, this is part of a larger trend away from shows made for kids. The 2000s were a golden age for the network, with a lot of creative, original series launching that had a unique energy. What made it even better was how these shows all seemed to connect and exist within the same shared universe.
The crossover between Codename: Kids Next Door and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy was a real highlight for Cartoon Network in the 2000s. The Grim Adventures of the KND, which first aired on November 11, 2007—18 years ago today—successfully combined the worlds of both shows. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to watch now, as both series have been taken off streaming platforms.
What Is The Grim Adventures of the KND?

“The Grim Adventures of the KND” is a special crossover episode combining the worlds of “The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy” and “Codename: Kids Next Door.” It serves as the finale for the sixth season of “Codename: Kids Next Door” and successfully merges the unique styles of both shows. While both series feature over-the-top humor, they’re set in relatively realistic environments. “Billy & Mandy” uses magic and the supernatural, thanks to the Grim Reaper, while “Kids Next Door” focuses on advanced technology to build out its universe.
This episode is seriously funny! It all starts when Billy accidentally gets Grim’s scythe stuck in his dad’s pants – talk about a predicament! He calls on the Kids Next Door for help, and Numbuh One comes up with this crazy plan to be Billy so his parents don’t find out. Of course, that means Billy ends up at the KND Treehouse! But the best part? Mandy quickly figures out what’s happening, and you just know she’s going to cause trouble. And she does! She breezes into the Treehouse and, predictably, takes over the entire operation with almost no effort. It’s exactly what everyone wanted to see!
Grim’s abilities are stolen by the Delightful Children From Down the Lane, one of the Kids Next Door’s most formidable enemies. They combine with Grim to become a giant, Grim Reaper-like creature that starts absorbing other kids from across both series. This creates a huge, fantastical threat – a fittingly large-scale event for these already imaginative shows – and it feels natural given the established characters and personalities of both worlds.
What Happened to the Grim Adventures of the KND?

This crossover episode, which aired as part of Season 6 of Codename: Kids Next Door, is difficult to find and even harder to stream. The show has been taken off platforms like HBO Max, so streaming it legally isn’t possible anymore. If you want to watch it online, you’ll have to buy it. While it doesn’t cost much, having to purchase it does make it less accessible.
This crossover is widely considered the best official collaboration Cartoon Network has ever produced. The creators of both shows teamed up to seamlessly blend their universes, resulting in a story that feels true to all the characters. It was such a massive event when it originally aired that, surprisingly, Cartoon Network hasn’t attempted another crossover of that scale since. This is what truly made the premiere so memorable.
The shows occasionally had shared promotions and ads, but this was a special instance where they truly combined into one episode. It was surprisingly successful, and it happened when Cartoon Network was trying out new things. Unfortunately, it’s now difficult to watch unless you’re willing to pay extra, which is disappointing.
