Comic book movies are incredibly popular right now, and Hollywood is constantly making adaptations to fill its biggest movie slots. Franchises like Marvel and DC are always releasing new projects, bringing well-known characters like Spider-Man, Superman, and Batman to life on the big screen. Although these movies have been around for a long time, a particularly important one actually came out 19 years ago today.
Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe became the dominant force, comic book movies had a rocky start. While films like Superman and Tim Burton’s Batman were hits, earlier attempts such as Daredevil, Fantastic Four, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine showed that making a good comic book movie wasn’t easy. But one director quickly stood out as exceptionally skilled at adapting comics to the big screen, and his first comic book film is celebrating a milestone anniversary.
Zack Snyder’s 300 Came Out 19 Years Ago Today

Released on March 9, 2007, the movie 300 is now almost 19 years old. Directed by Zack Snyder, it’s based on the graphic novel 300 by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley. The film dramatically portrays the Battle of Thermopylae, where King Leonidas led 300 Spartan warriors against a massive Persian army.
The movie 300 closely follows the original comic book, as director Zack Snyder was a huge fan of the source material. He meticulously planned each shot to mirror the panels of the comic, resulting in the film’s distinctive visual style. Upon release, 300 stood out due to its highly stylized look, dramatic story, and intense violence, contributing to its significant success. The film earned $468.8 million despite a relatively small budget of $65 million, making it the tenth highest-grossing movie of 2007.
The movie 300 really left its mark on pop culture, with many of its famous lines and scenes being copied and joked about in other films and TV shows. It even led to a short-lived resurgence of historical action movies, like 2010’s Clash of the Titans. While 300 isn’t universally loved – it currently has a 61% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – it’s undeniable that it made a big impact when it came out.
300 Is What Turned Zack Snyder Into A Comic Book Movie Director

Zack Snyder directed 300 as only his second film, getting the opportunity after the success of his 2004 film, Dawn of the Dead. 300 established Snyder as a popular and well-respected director, and arguably its biggest legacy is how it launched his career. While the film influenced sword-and-sandal action movies, it had an even greater impact on the development of comic book movies.
Zack Snyder started directing comic book movies with 300, which was the first of many adaptations he would create. Following 300‘s success, he released Watchmen in 2009, a film many consider to be his best. Watchmen brought Alan Moore’s famous comic series to the big screen, and despite some changes, it remains popular with fans. Both 300 and Watchmen established Snyder as a reliable director in the comic book genre, ultimately leading to his most significant opportunities.
Following the success of films like 300 and Watchmen, Zack Snyder was chosen to bring the DC Comics universe to the big screen. He led Warner Bros.’ attempt to create a competitor to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, sparking a significant rivalry that reshaped Hollywood. Snyder directed Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and began work on Justice League. He later stepped down from directing Justice League, but ultimately released his complete vision of the film as Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) received a mixed response and didn’t achieve major success, so Warner Bros. decided to revamp it, bringing in James Gunn to launch a new DC Universe (DCU). Despite this change, many fans of the original DCEU—often called the Snyderverse—continue to ask Warner Bros. to continue Snyder’s vision. However, Zack Snyder himself has shifted his focus to creating new, original franchises such as Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon.
Look, Zack Snyder’s movies? They’re definitely hit or miss. He’s not exactly a flawless director, let’s be real. But it’s hard to ignore how much of an impact he’s had on Hollywood. I honestly think 300 was the movie that really launched his career and got him to where he is today.
