Two classic Disney games that haven’t been available for a while are getting a re-release. Digital Eclipse previously released The Disney Afternoon Collection in 2017, featuring popular NES titles like DuckTales, DuckTales 2, TaleSpin, Darkwing Duck, and both Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers games. While this collection was a hit, it wasn’t originally available on Nintendo systems, disappointing many fans. Now, almost ten years later, that’s being fixed, and two more games are being added to the mix.
I’m so excited! Digital Eclipse just announced that The Disney Afternoon Collection is coming to Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2 next month, on February 26th! It’s awesome because it includes the original six games, but they’re also adding Goof Troop and Bonkers! Those two were actually SNES games, released back in ’93 and ’94, so they weren’t on the NES. Basically, if you already have it on PlayStation, Xbox, or PC, it’s the same collection, but now Switch fans get to enjoy Goof Troop and Bonkers too!
Why These Disney Games Are Important
The two new Disney games in The Disney Afternoon Collection might seem minor, but they’re actually significant to video game history. Goof Troop, especially, is notable as one of the first projects by renowned game designer Shinji Mikami. Just three years after creating Goof Troop, Mikami went on to develop the hugely popular Resident Evil series, a landmark in the survival-horror genre. This collection gives fans a great opportunity to experience Mikami’s early work more easily.
While not a standout title, Bonkers remains an interesting piece of Disney history. The game is based on the short-lived 1993-1994 TV show of the same name and, like the other games in this collection, was developed by Capcom. Though it doesn’t boast the same famous developers as some other Capcom titles, Bonkers was well-received as a platformer when it first came out, and should still be enjoyable to play today.
