Pedro Pascal has been incredibly busy in Hollywood lately, becoming a fan favorite and consistently landing roles in major projects. He’s starred in hits like The Mandalorian and The Last of Us, and recently appeared in the Fantastic Four movie. Despite all this blockbuster work, he’s also made time for smaller, independent films. Two of these films, released around the time of the Fantastic Four premiere, will soon be available to stream on HBO Max.
This week, HBO Max added two recent films from A24, both featuring Pedro Pascal. They are Celine Song’s romantic comedy, The Materialists, and Ari Aster’s political thriller, Eddington, which blends neo-Western and suspenseful elements.
Two new movies are coming to HBO this November. The Materialists, featuring Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans, will be available to stream on HBO Max starting November 7th and will air on the HBO channel November 8th. Then, on November 14th, Eddington arrives on HBO Max, followed by its HBO channel premiere on November 15th.
Pascal stars in both Eddington and The Materialists, but the two movies are quite distinct. They also show how different A24’s films have performed so far this year.
Unlike her critically acclaimed film Past Lives, Celine Song’s The Materialists is a straightforward romantic comedy – and that’s perfectly fine. It appears to be exactly the type of movie she intended to make, and audiences responded well, helping it earn over $104 million worldwide on a budget of around $20 million. These kinds of box office results, reminiscent of comedies and dramas from the 1990s, are a welcome sign that mid-budget films can still succeed in theaters.
Despite receiving praise, the film Eddington also faced criticism. Set at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, it explores the political climate of 2020. Even with a well-known director like Ari Aster (Hereditary) and a star-studded cast including Pascal and Joaquin Phoenix, Eddington was predicted to be a challenging film for audiences. It ultimately earned $12.7 million in theaters, covering only about half of its production costs. Fortunately, A24 isn’t afraid to take risks, which means films like Eddington can still be made even if they don’t perform strongly in cinemas.
