As January 2026 nears its end, the anime world is already seeing some interesting developments. Netflix is continuing to invest in anime, with new shows and projects that are exciting fans. While Crunchyroll releases a large number of new series each season, Netflix typically focuses on original content and bringing back popular older titles. However, Netflix has been increasing its involvement with brand new anime series and movies recently, reflecting the rapid growth of the anime industry. As a major streaming platform, Netflix already boasts a fantastic selection of anime and is constantly adding more, ensuring there’s usually something new for fans to enjoy each month, even if the updates aren’t always extensive.
January brought a wave of new content to Netflix, including the exclusive releases of Love Through a Prism and Cosmic Princess Kaguya, as well as classic anime like Gintama and Magic Knight Rayearth. According to What’s on Netflix, February will see the addition of at least one anime title: the 2006 series Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple, arriving on February 15, 2026. The first season of Baki-dou: The Invincible Samurai is also anticipated to stream next month, though a specific date hasn’t been announced. Expect more titles to be revealed as January comes to a close.
What Is Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple About?

This funny action story centers around Kenichi Shirahama, a high school student who frequently gets beaten up during karate practice. Outside of practice, he’s always reading self-help books. One day on his way to school, he unexpectedly meets Miu Furinji, who initially knocks him down after being startled. She quickly realizes she overreacted, apologizes, and asks to be friends.
The same day, a fellow club member challenged him to a fight with high stakes: the loser would have to leave. Realizing he wasn’t strong enough to win, he turned to Miu for help after witnessing her effortlessly defeat three attackers. She took him to her grandfather’s dojo, a training ground for skilled martial artists. Miu promised to make him stronger, but warned it wouldn’t be easy, leaving him anxious about the challenges ahead.
Kenichi starts training to become a skilled martial artist, protecting his friends and community from dangerous gangs. The anime series, which aired 50 episodes between 2006 and 2007, wasn’t continued with a second season, meaning much of the story remains untold. A short OVA was released in 2012, but it wasn’t long enough to complete the adaptation.
