A game originally released for the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox in 2005 has been removed from sale on Steam, which was the only current platform where you could buy it. Now, the only way to get the Ubisoft game is through resale markets like eBay. Even then, you’ll still need the original console to actually play it. This is disappointing news for fans, but there’s a bit of positive news to soften the blow.
This summer, Atari bought the rights to five games from Ubisoft, including the 2005 title Cold Fear. Because of this change, Cold Fear is no longer available on Steam. While it’s currently unknown if it will return, Atari has hinted that it plans to release the game – and the other acquired titles – on new platforms. This likely means it will reappear on Steam, and potentially on modern gaming consoles as well.
About the Game
Released in 2005, this Ubisoft game was created by Darkworks, a studio that has since closed down. It’s a unique blend of third-person shooting and survival horror, originally for PS2 and Xbox, and later on PC. However, it wasn’t a critical or commercial success, scoring between 66 and 71 on Metacritic and selling only 70,000 copies. This is likely why Ubisoft never revisited the franchise. It’s a surprise, then, to see Atari showing interest – they’re a smaller company that often focuses on niche projects. Interestingly, a movie adaptation was planned back in 2006, but it never materialized.
You take on the role of Tom Hansen, a member of the US Coast Guard, who discovers a strange parasite on a Russian whaling ship in the Bering Strait. This parasite has turned the entire crew into zombie-like creatures. Hansen must prevent the parasite from spreading to land, and his investigation quickly leads him into a conspiracy involving the CIA and the Russian mafia. While the story setup is interesting, the game doesn’t fully deliver on its potential.
We’ll have to wait and see what Atari intends to do with it, as it’s currently not accessible. In the meantime, please share your thoughts in the comments below, or discuss it with others on the ComicBook Forum.
