Westerns are one of the oldest genres in film, with some of the very first movies being short, silent films about life on the American frontier. They were hugely popular from the 1930s through the 1970s, and actors like John Wayne became synonymous with the genre. While their popularity dipped in the 1980s, Westerns never disappeared completely and saw a comeback around the year 2000. Today, the genre is doing very well on television, with shows like Yellowstone and its spin-offs being major hits on streaming platforms. Western themes have also found success in other areas, like the video game Red Dead Redemption.
It’s common for filmmakers to playfully poke fun at established genres, and the Western is no exception. While Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles is the most famous Western parody, a lesser-known comedy from 2010, Gunless, has recently gained a following. Though the Canadian film, written and directed by William Phillips, didn’t do well in theaters and received mixed reviews (with a 40% score on Rotten Tomatoes), it found an audience after becoming available on streaming platforms. Online, on sites like YouTube and Reddit, many viewers are now calling Gunless an overlooked gem that deserves more recognition.
Gunless Subverted Classic Western Tropes
The beginning of Gunless looked like it would follow a familiar western plot: a mysterious gunslinger, known as the Montana Kid, arrives in a quiet Canadian town. Usually, this stranger would discover trouble – outlaws or some other problem – and use his shooting skills to become the town hero before riding off again. The Montana Kid was actually hoping for this kind of situation, as he liked a fair fight. However, he was surprised to find the town filled with friendly, law-abiding people. While getting supplies, the Montana Kid saw a blacksmith named Jack fix one of his horse’s shoes. Mistaking the kindness for an attempt to steal his horse, the Montana Kid started an argument and challenged Jack to a duel.
Like most people in town, Jack didn’t have a gun for a duel, which is where the movie’s title comes from. The Montana Kid decided to stick around and fix the town’s windmill, hoping to get the only pistol in town as payment – he planned to give it to Jack. He constantly tried to act like a traditional Western hero, but the townsfolk either didn’t care or were confused, and his attempts often failed embarrassingly. Even the mystery surrounding his identity fell apart when he had to sign an official paper, revealing his name as Sean Lafferty. As you might expect, he began to care about the townspeople and ultimately had to use unusual tactics to protect them from bounty hunters who were after him.
Gunless Was a Humorous Deconstruction of the Western Genre
Despite its quirky style, Gunless didn’t shy away from showing real emotion. The film also cleverly examined and questioned common themes found in Westerns. Sean, a man wanted for killing eleven criminals, initially justified his actions, but Jack argued he was simply a ruthless killer. The townspeople, too, saw dueling as a pointless and brutal practice. While Sean refused to shoot an unarmed opponent, Jack challenged him, noting that Sean’s own skill with a gun already created an unfair advantage. Through his encounters with the town’s friendly residents, Sean’s beliefs were put to the test. Ultimately, the town had a positive impact on Sean, changing him more than he changed it.
The biggest reason Gunless didn’t succeed in theaters was its marketing. Westerns and comedies aren’t as popular with moviegoers as they used to be. While many films still include humor, like those in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they’re primarily advertised as action movies. Gunless was promoted as a comedy, which made it harder to attract a wide audience. Now that it’s available for wider viewing, however, Western fans are finding and appreciating the film.
